When was the last time that you had a romantic getaway with your partner? If you can’t remember, then I’d say it’s a sign that you need to take one. Imagine a weekend stay where you’re surrounded by nature, steps away from Whistler Mountain, and within arm’s reach of a plethora of dining options. My husband, Shayne, and I recently had a romantic stay in Whistler Creekside, and it ticked all those boxes.

Hotel Heaven

Our dreamy adventure began when we checked into our Studio Lake View Suite at Nita Lake Lodge, located in Whistler’s Creekside area, a five-minute drive south of Whistler Village.

Not only did we love the calming lake view, but the fireplace, double-soaker tub and king-size bed were an integral part of setting the indulgent mood of our romantic escape to the mountains. This boutique hotel is beautiful.

There are six room types to choose from and every room option is exceptionally spacious with a contemporary, mountain-design feel. Nita has several great amenities such as a gym, spa, their own restaurant, bar and café.

Not only that, but they also offer complimentary use of snowshoes, sleds and fat bikes (bikes with huge tires to tackle the snow) and a courtesy shuttle to Whistler Village. We quickly found our fluffy, green robes and made ourselves at home.

Spa Time

I’m a massageaholic, so I booked us in for a 60-minute, deep tissue, couple’s massage at The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge. Nothing is more fun than strutting around in a fluffy hotel robe, am I right? Before our massage, we enjoyed a sunset soak in their hot tubs, which offer a stunning view of Whistler Mountain. We also snuck in a quick steam and a relaxing cup of organic, herbal tea in their plush spa lounge.

The treatment turned us both to jelly. While descending back to planet earth, we debated getting pizza from nearby, local-favourite Creekbread, so that we could eat dinner in bed, but I’d packed a great dinner outfit and wanted to dress up – sorry Shayne, no pizza for you!

Dinner Date

We went to The Den at the hotel, which is known for its use of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Our intimate dining experience included Yellowfin Tuna and BC Salmon Poke, which melted in our mouths.

Shayne dined on the tender Duck Confit Linguine and I chose the juicy Grilled AAA Striploin, both paired with wine suggestions from our server. Although challenging, it’s imperative to save room for dessert, which is something that we regrettably didn’t do.

If you want to continue revelling into the evening, the Cure Lounge has an incredible cocktail list, but our after-dinner food coma directed us to our cloud-like bed rather early!

Lakeside Strolls

Waking up to the daylight flowing through the blinds, we eased into the day with a coffee beside the fireplace. Nita Lake Lodge is the perfect location for a morning stroll, with various paths to explore that weave around both Nita Lake and Alpha Lake.

Our walk was followed by breakfast at The Fix, which is located in the hotel and known for its gourmet coffees, locally-made pastries, artisan bread, and gluten-free options.

Another breakfast option, which is just up the street, is Southside Diner, which has a bit more of an eggs-and-bacon approach to the first meal of the day. There’s also the new Rockit Coffee, which has breakfast wraps, smoothies and pastries. You can grab and go, but the funky, 70s rock decor makes for a cool breakfast vibe.

Mountain Fun

Nita Lake Lodge is only 500 metres from the new Creekside Gondola, which whisks you up Whistler Mountain. With a rental store and guest relations building right at the base, you can get everything you need without leaving Creekside.

If your ski legs are up for it then check out the Peak to Creek run, an 11-kilometre (seven-mile) ski run from the top of Whistler Mountain all the way down to Creekside.

Après Options

Sometimes I think people go skiing just so they can après, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Creekside is home to legendary après spot, Dusty’s Bar and BBQ. If you’re looking for one of the best Caesars in town and to bust a move while the tunes are pumping, then this is the spot for you. If you’re a sports-loving couple, you don’t have to worry about missing a game because you can après at Roland’s Creekside Pub, with its nine flat-screen TVs.

If you’re after a crafted cocktail along with some Thai bites, Mekong opens for après from 3 to 5 PM on Saturdays and Sundays in peak winter. Their Mekong Caesar has a unique, Thai twist and we love it with a serving of Popcorn Maitake Mushrooms and Soft Shell Crab Papaya Salad.

When you’re craving a cozy experience after your mountain adventure, Cure Lounge, located at Nita Lake Lodge, is where you want to be. The couches right beside the fireplace are my favourite spot to sip on mulled wine, which I like to pair with Cure’s Parmesan Fries. Retail Fix

Get the Goods is the place to go for unusual, locally sourced gifts and keepsakes. They have everything from table and lawn games to Riedel glassware and cocktail shakers, children’s toys and skincare to funky sunglasses and jewellery. It’s like Aladdin’s cave in there!

There’s also a lovely interior design store called 122 West, where you could definitely get carried away imagining what you’d buy for your own mountain chalet pad.

ART POP Whistler is run by local artist, Andrea Mueller and is a beautiful space packed with her nature-inspired artwork along with clothing, jewellery and other whimsical keepsakes and gifts. It’s good to note she also does events (adult and kid), which could make for a unique date night.

It’s also worth noting that there’s both a grocery and liquor store for any little bits and bobs you might want to grab.

The hardest part about staying at Nita Lake Lodge was checking out. Waking up beside a glacier-fed lake and to the peaceful sounds of nature reminded me that not only was this vacation important for Shayne and me, but it was, in fact, perfect for my soul.

In the Whistler Changemaker series, we’re connecting with local people, businesses and organizations who are putting sustainability at the forefront of what they do.

The Whistler community cares deeply for the environment and acknowledges that we all have a role to play in preserving the area’s natural beauty. The Municipality’s Big Moves Strategy sets out a plan to act on climate change and reduce emissions by 50% below 2007 levels by 2030, and in the long-term, reach net zero. To achieve this target, Whistler is collectively taking action to move beyond the car, reduce visitor travel emissions, decarbonize passenger and commercial vehicles, reduce building emissions, and shift towards lower carbon consumption.

We know that this kind of work is an ongoing journey as we all learn how we can contribute to a more sustainable future. Join our Changemaker host, Mike Douglas, a member-at-large of Protect Our Winters Canada, pro skier, enviro nerd and Whistler local as he shines a light on what’s happening in Whistler to move the dial.

In video #2, we touch base with Josef Weichinger, Resort Manager and Darren Boyd, Director of Engineering, at Four Seasons Resort Whistler about data-driven approaches to sustainability initiatives, reducing carbon emissions per hotel room, and plush robes.

How important is data collection to your environmental goals?

Darren (D): It’s essential. Back in February this year, we worked with an outside company to do an extensive energy audit (ASHRAE Level 2). It took them a couple of months to gather the data; they even sent a team to the hotel for a week. The high-level results were that, although we have a small carbon footprint thanks to BC Hydro, there were other things we could do to continue to push down our emissions.

The top recommendations were to eliminate fossil fuel usage on-site, switch to electricity where possible, do an LED light retrofit, improve building management systems; like how we schedule our meeting space, boiler fuel shifting, look at water fixture efficiencies and install smart thermostats.

Josef (J): The predicted result of doing these things is that we’ll reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 35% and save around $292,000 annually. We’re excited to see if we can hit these numbers.

D: It’s also mandatory for us to do an energy audit every five years, so we can keep up with the shifts in technology as well as keep it top of mind.

What’s the carbon footprint of a night at the Four Seasons Whistler?

J: Around 98%* of our energy comes from renewable sources like hydroelectricity (through BC Hydro), which means travellers to Whistler leave a lighter carbon footprint. Our goal is to get to net zero by 2030 using the data we collected to tell us how we can get there.

D: Our boilers run on a dual system which uses both gas and electricity, and we now try to run our electric boilers more. It makes sense that if we use less water we have to heat less water, so we also looked at our water fixtures. When we get to the end of life for the system we have, we’ll be looking to convert to a heat pump system or another type of boiler that uses little to no gas.

D: We have proprietary software that tracks our energy, carbon and water consumption, along with our waste. We can drill down into what each room in the hotel is using. We upload our daily occupancy, electricity, gas and water metres numbers, and log our biodegradable waste, landfill and mixed recyclables. It’s GFL Environmental that gives us our waste figures each month and our aim is to divert things away from landfill.

We often check in with the community to see if anyone is looking for some of the materials or things we’re getting rid of and if we renovate a room, we engage a liquidator who refurbishes and sells the furniture instead of it going to waste. We’ve turned an old boiler into a smoker before, which is used for our summer BBQs.

J: We also eliminated single-use plastic in our amenities, so instead of those individual shampoo and conditioner bottles, you’ll find ceramic pump dispensers. Our cleaning products are also eco-certified to minimize environmental impact. In the mini bar and at our spa, we try to use local vendors and producers with eco packaging. We look at using local goods to help support our local businesses, but also because these items don’t have to travel as far.

Currently, we average 12.58 kilograms of carbon per room per night. According to the ASHRAE research, that’s the lowest in Whistler, with hotels outside of BC, Canada getting 37 kilograms plus per night (that’s on the lower end, there were hotels with numbers closer to 200). We need to reduce our figure by 5% by the end of the year to stay on track with our target to get to net zero. These goals are all part of our key performance indicators, so we’re very driven to meet them. 

What are some of the initiatives you’ve implemented from the energy audit?

Water Fixtures

D: We replaced old faucet restrictors with new ones that halve the flow rate. We’ve done the same thing with the shower heads and we’re going to low flush with the toilets next year (2024). We still have great water pressure, but we’re using halve the amount of water.

Smart Thermostats

J: We’re also upgrading to smart thermostats. These give us real-time monitoring of energy use by room.

D: They’re linked to your room key card so the smart thermostat will know you’ve left the room for the day and turn the heating or cooling down to a certain level. It also does things like compare how long it takes for a room to heat up or cool down across the whole hotel, so if one room takes a long time we can look into why and see if something needs fixing or replacing.

The thermostats talk to the door lock, which tells it if a guest or a member of staff has entered the room. If it’s a guest key it will turn on the heating or cooling, but it won’t if it’s a team member. You can still adjust the temperature to what they want, but when you leave the room it will adjust to a more efficient temperature level (this is called the deadband level and is usually around a three-degree difference). It also interacts with our reservation system and will increase the deadband if it knows the room is going to be unoccupied. Every few degrees count when you’re working with 273 rooms. The goal is to keep increasing that deadband where you can, without compromising on guest experience.

J: People sometimes ask what happens if there are multiple guests with several room keys. The thermostat uses motion detectors to see if there is still someone in the room. When someone exits, it waits five minutes and if it hasn’t detected any movement it will kick in and adjust the temperature and turn the fireplace off if it’s been left on.

D: It can also detect if the patio doors are open and send us an alert if excessive heating or cooling is happening. It also has a wellness feature which alerts us if a guest hasn’t moved for over 12 hours. We can then go and check on the guest. Next year, we’re aiming to get it connected to the light system so it can turn those off too.

J: Just to put any fears at rest, it doesn’t have eyes, so it can’t see what you’re doing. Much like a patio flood light which comes on when it’s dark, it senses motion.

Electric Vehicles

J: One of Whistler’s biggest emitters of carbon is vehicle traffic. It’s one of the RMOW’s Big Moves Strategies to reduce this. In line with this, we have 14 electric vehicle chargers (plus two Tesla-specific ones) and electric house cars, which are used to take guests short distances within Whistler.

D: We also installed motion-sensitive LED lights in our garage to reduce energy consumption. They’re always on for safety, but reduce down to 50% power when no one is there.

What’s next to tackle?

D: We’re going to be replacing our hot water tanks with SmartPlate tankless heaters to improve energy efficiency. We managed to repurpose part of an old tank into a smoker we use for our BBQs, but with the new technology, we avoid that process entirely.

Essentially, we’re replacing a massive tank of water the size of a car down to something the size of a golf bag. With this new system, we’re only heating the water that’s being used, versus keeping a large body of water at a constant temperature. This makes it a lot more efficient, which is good for reducing carbon and also cost. 

We’re working with Fortis BC (natural gas) and BC Hydro, who have their own environmental goals, to reduce their carbon footprint. There are rebates available through Building Energy Solutions Ltd., out of Vancouver, and directly with BC Hydro. They can do the assessments that need to be done to get these things going, and give feedback on what could be done. This has led to Fortis BC giving us money for the new shower heads, faucet reducers and thermostats.

When things like our boilers and chillers come to their end of their life, it’s what we switch to at that point which will be a big decision and affect the numbers we want to get down to. There’s a lot of research that has to be done.

J: We specifically want to dial in how we track our food waste. We are currently looking at various technologies to see what the best way to approach this is.

But where to go? Look no further than Whistler. This little mountain town is a certified pup paradise. Majestic lakefront dog parks? Check. Dog-friendly accommodation? Double-check. And trails? Yeah, you could say we have a few of those.

Like the happy humans in town, the dogs that live here have it pretty good. Bribed by the promises of sausages, I convinced some of our local, four-legged friends to share the local intel on what you need when planning a Whistler vacation with your pup.

Maola – Four Seasons Hotel Dog

Being the hotel dog at the Four Seasons Resort Whistler is about as sweet a gig as it sounds. Equipped with the floofiest coat and very boopable nose, Maola is the lucky dog on the job. She’s an expert at putting smiles on guests’ faces and showing them the local trails with their pets.

How does the Four Seasons make dogs feel like VIPs (very important pups)? 

MAOLA: Visiting dogs at the Four Seasons Whistler are treated just as well as their owners. Doggos select their bedding and pillows from a menu to fit their style and comfort needs. You can embrace the outdoors with the Plaid Cloud Cushion Indoor Camping Set or go tropical with the Pineapple Dreams Set. There’s even a softer back-loving bedding option for when you’ve gone a little too hard at the dog park.

When hunger strikes, you can order a five-star dinner prepared by Four Seasons’ chefs to be enjoyed in the comfort of your room. Fair warning, you may never want to leave and then I’ll have to ask one of my colleagues to help you on your way.

Where are your favourite places to go for a walk?

MAOLA: The walks directly across from the hotel are my favourite. Right across the road, you’ll find the endless trails of Lost Lake Park. In spring, summer and fall dogs are free to explore the trails with their owners and play lakeside at Canine Cove, the off-leash dog beach.

When the snow starts to fly, the park is converted into a winter wonderland for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Your owners can see full details on getting day passes here, but unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed in Lost Lake Park in the winter.

My human co-workers have created a map showing you the way to some of my favourite walks. Just ask the concierge and they’ll be happy to give you one for your next walk.

For snow-loving pups like myself, I also highly recommend a trip down to Whistler Olympic Park for some cross-country skiing. They have set of dog-friendly groomed trails for dogs to run their zoomies out. There’s no need for the humans to bring their own gear as they have skis, boots, poles and even ski chariots (for towing little humans) for rent on site. What do you recommend for dogs to do while their owners are out for the day?

MAOLA: If you can’t join in on the fun, your owners can book a private pet sitter for the day through Whistler Dog Sitting. They’ll take you out for the best walks and give plenty of belly rubs.

When your humans get home they’ll probably want to enjoy some après cocktails at the alfresco patio camper and there’s no need for you to miss out as you can join in and socialize in the adjacent patio kennel for pups.

Can you pass on some tips on the Village rules so we stay out of the doghouse?

ALTA: Generally, Whistler is pretty relaxed when it comes to dogs, but there are some key rules you should follow.

First off, remember to stay on leash unless you’re in a designated off-leash area. While it can be super tempting to ditch your leash in the forest, make sure your owner keeps you clipped in. Even trails that seem empty could have people around any corner. They may be scared of dogs, have their own dog that doesn’t get along with others, or worst case you could cause a nasty crash if they’re on a bike or skis.

Us dogs can also be scary to local wildlife and get into conflicts with bears. Have your owners pack a retractable leash so you can savour freedom in the wild while still being under control when needed.

Secondly, make sure your owner scoops your poop. Yes, even in the woods. There are free bags available at most parks and along the Village Stroll.

Can you recommend some of your favourite routes for visiting pups?

ALTA: Many dogs don’t know that they can go for a walk around the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course. It’s the perfect place to check out the changing fall leaves and the first dusting of snow. For pups that want to stay in shape, a loop on the Valley Trail around the Whistler Golf Club is always a classic. And for adventure seekers like me, I recommend hopping on the hotel shuttle bus for a trip down to Train Wreck trail in Cheakamus when the snow starts to fly. Don’t forget to tell your biped to bring their snowshoes!

These days, many people work from home and although the chance to do our next virtual meeting with PJ bottoms still on is tempting, how about we switch those out for bike shorts?

Whistler has free WiFi available in select areas of the resort (look for Whistler WiFi when you search for wireless connections), which means you can sit in the middle of Whistler Olympic Plaza and attend a virtual meeting before hitting the trails – just tell the office that epic mountain scenery is the latest Zoom background.

Most hotels and accommodations offer free WiFi for your home away from home, so why not move your office to the mountains and enjoy having nature and adventure right on your doorstep? Here are five reasons why you should consider remote working in Whistler.

#1 Adrenaline Breaks

There’s nothing like the mountains beckoning to encourage you to go for that early morning run or bike ride. It’ll help you start the working day with some pep in your step.

When you hit a work-related goal, you could treat yourself with a hit of adrenaline-fuelled fun. Surpassed that sales target? Raft some Class III whitewater rapids. Shot past that word count? Get some runs in at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Nailed the product launch? Time to go off-roading in the wilderness.

With some adventure-based goal setting when remote working in Whistler, we reckon you can get a lot done up here in the mountains!

#2 Inspiring Nature

Biophilia is what we call that innate connection we have to nature and the outdoors. It’s why we feel happy sitting in the sunshine next to a babbling brook, looking out over a vast mountain vista or enclosed in a shaded, tree-lined hideaway. Studies have shown that inserting elements of nature into the workplace can help reduce stress, enhance creativity and boost productivity, so our argument is; why not grab your laptop and work surrounded by it?

Whistler has these spaces in abundance. Our advice is to take a pre-work stroll or bike ride to hunt out some potential spots. Whether you like to work in the calm of a shady forest (try the walking trail around Lost Lake), the bustle of a lakeside park (bike the Valley Trail around Alta Lake) or the sound of flowing water (try Rebagliati Park and Florence Peterson Park), you’ll find a work station with the sky as your ceiling.

#3 Bring the Family

Working from home with your kids telling you they’re bored every five minutes is not conducive to a productive workday, but who can be bored in Whistler? Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures run three-day camps for active eight- to 12-year-olds who would like to spend their days climbing rocks instead of the walls.

Or, if you’re travelling with your partner you could consider the divide and conquer method and enjoy some quality time adventuring with the kids (bike the Valley Trail, hike around Lost Lake, play at the parks etc.) and then switch over to get some work time in.

Take in some culture and art with the kiddos by heading to the Audain Art Museum and Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. The latter is home to the Thunderbird Cafe, which serves bannock bread with its creamy salmon chowder and is a great choice for a family-friendly dinner.

In the evening, you could all come together and experience something like Vallea Lumina, a magical multi-media walk in the woods to round out the day. Happy kids = happy parents.

While Whistler may be most known for skiing, snowboarding and biking, it’s also packed with things that help make a multi-generation trip awesome any time of the year. For example, a wide range of activities spanning interests and abilities, different accommodation options, lots of dining choices and an accessible central core – Whistler Village.

Here are our top tips for planning a multi-generational vacation to Whistler:

Plan Ahead

Whistler is usually an easy destination to rock up to with no itinerary, making plans as you go, but when travelling with a family (or any group for that matter), it helps to have, at least, a loose plan in place.

Travelling to Whistler

Let’s start with how you’re going to get here. Your options from Vancouver International Airport are driving (car or van / SUV rentals are available), shuttle or private vehicle. Renting a car (or cars) may seem like the easiest option, but keep in mind you probably won’t need it once you get here as everything is located in, or near, Whistler Village.

The gondolas take skiers, bikers and sightseers up the mountains right from the Village. Most activity tours depart from here too, even if they take place elsewhere. It’s also where the majority of the shops and restaurants are based. If you’re at one end of the Village and want to get to the other there’s a handy free shuttle. There are also taxis and public buses readily available should you want to explore farther or stay outside the Village.

Picking the Ideal Accommodation

The right accommodation for your family is going to depend on your needs. If you have a toddler or baby travelling with you, you’ll probably want a townhome, chalet or hotel with a kitchenette to make naps and feeding easy. The larger space of a vacation home rental will also make it easy to spend downtime relaxing as a family. Many of the five-bedroom and up vacation homes are outside the Village, so keep in mind that you might need a vehicle or two, or plan on taking public transit and taxis regularly.

If you want to stay in or near the Village it’s important to know that most four-bedroom accommodation options only allow a maximum of 10 guests due to fire codes. If your family is bigger than that (including the little ones), consider renting two condos at the same property. Valhalla and Mountain Star are both great options for this and are within walking distance of the lifts.

If you don’t plan on spending much time in your accommodation, a hotel at the heart of the action could be the right fit. Especially if you love a good hot tub soak and want to take a break from making beds. If you’re worried about being too far apart, you can always request rooms on the same floor or see if the hotel has adjoining rooms.

Best Whistler Activities for Groups

Letting each person pick an activity for the group is a great way to guarantee everyone feels like they got to do what they wanted to, but it can also be a bit challenging to organize on your own. So, we’ve come up with a list of some options that families can do together. Options will vary by season, but here are a few guaranteed to be family-friendly.

Idea #1: Go Up the Mountain

Even if you don’t all ski, snowboard, hike or bike, you can still head up the mountain together.

Those on foot can sightsee from the gondolas, dine at one of the on-mountain restaurants and relax, taking in the views from the Roundhouse Lodge or Rendezvous Lodge. Idea #2: Bike Trip

When the sun comes out to play, so do the bikes. Whistler has a car-free, 40-kilometre-long Valley Trail that winds its way past lakes, parks and rivers. Choose your section based on what you want to see, from weaving through old-growth cedars to watching float planes land on a glacier-fed lake.

You can rent bikes, including e-bikes, which are a good option for people in your group potentially daunted by the distance, and also chariots and trailers for the little ones (and your picnic gear!)

Idea #3: Bear Watching

A Whistler must-do is spotting our most beloved animal, the black bear in its natural habitat. The best and safest way to see one is on a Bear Viewing Tour. The Whistler Bear Viewing Safari from Whistler Photo Safaris is suitable for all ages, while Whistler Blackcomb’s Bear Viewing Tour is recommended for ages nine and up.

Idea #4: Snowmobile

Head into the backcountry and whiz past snow-capped peaks and glaciers on a snowmobile tour. There are family-specific tours where kids ride tandem with an adult and can even try driving their own mini-snowmobiles!

If snowmobiling is a little too adventurous for all the members of your group, check out the snowcat option (think of a small cabin set a-top big snow tracks). You get to experience the same majestic alpine environment from the comfort of a luxury, heated snowcat.

Idea #5: Arts & Culture

Whistler’s offerings aren’t all outdoors either, art and culture lovers will delight in the amount there is to do and see. Visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre for an immersive cultural sharing experience, head to the Audain Art Museum (youth aged 18 and under are free) or learn about Whistler’s colourful past at the Whistler Museum.

There’s also Arts Whistler, located inside the Maury Young Arts Centre who put on shows, workshops and performances year-round for all age groups.

Idea #6: Magic in the Mountains

Vallea Lumina is an evening activity that spans the ages and is open year-round. A multimedia show set in the forest, you wander the 1.5-kilometre path while being immersed in the story of two lost hikers searching for stardust. The path has a few ups and downs, but isn’t too strenuous. It usually takes around an hour to move through and is at your own pace, so you can take your time.

Although exploring together does make for some good family time, it’s also fun to divide and conquer and then come together at the end of the day to share stories.

The most important thing to keep in mind when picking an activity is everyone’s ability level and tour operator age restrictions. Some adventures may require kids be six years old or over. If you need some more ideas browse below.

Family Mealtime

Mealtime is a great opportunity to share your favourite parts of the day and plan your next adventure. Whistler has many family-friending restaurants, a few trusty ones for kid-approved food at a good price are Old Spaghetti Factory, Hunter Gather and Caramba. The thing about dining as a group is that getting a large table at peak times can be tricky. One tip would be to play with your timing and think about an earlier dinner with time for a walk or ice cream stop-off on the way back to home base.

Many places take reservations, so if you’re a planner lock those in early, but if you’re in-resort already then going by in-person ahead of time or calling is the best way to get a table. There are also plenty of grab-and-go options if you need something a bit quicker and if you’re staying in a vacation rental you can even take advantage of the Whistler Cooks Fridge Full service and eat well without the hard work.

Amidst all the fun, don’t forget to take pictures! Designate someone as the family photographer for the day and seek out these beautiful backdrops. A facial expression parents with teenagers know all too well. Although there are some things that are super fun to do with the whole family, there are times when everyone needs to explore solo or at least in a posse of their peers.

Whistler has some great activity, dining and hangout options for teens, take a look . . .

Teen Ski and Snowboard Lessons at Whistler Blackcomb

Lessons are a great way for kids to meet new friends, learn new skills and have fun riding with their peers. The programs sell out fast, so it’s worth booking in advance if you think they’d work for your tribe. Also, helmets are mandatory, so make sure your kid has one.

Pricing depends on when you’re booking, as there are regular and peak seasons to be aware of.

Extremely Canadian – Big Mountain Awareness: 10 – 15 Years

Designed by experienced mountain guides, Big Mountain Awareness aims to empower young adventurers with the mountain knowledge they need to explore safely.

“Social media and evolving freeride gear are pushing youth skiers and riders to access terrain well beyond their scope of training and experience,” explains Jill Dunnigan, Owner at Extremely Canadian. “This single-day camp for 10- to 15-year-olds will arm students with the knowledge, understanding and attitudes to make good, safe decisions within ski area boundaries.”

This program fuels ski stoke and helps young riders deal with unforeseen challenges on the hill, as well as celebrate good decision-making among their peers. It’s for advanced intermediate to expert riders only (ski and board).

Extremely Canadian – Teen 2-Day Steeps Clinic: 13 to 18 Years

For teens looking to push the boundaries of their skiing, this two-day steeps clinic is designed for the next generation of rippers. They need to be able to ski an ungroomed, black diamond run for this clinic, where expert coaches help them tackle Whistler Blackcomb’s most legendary steeps. They’ll hone their technical skills, master steep-skiing tactics, and gain the judgment and confidence to make smart decisions in the mountains—all while having an absolute blast.

Outdoor Activities for Tweens and Teens Rolling Solo

Whistler has many thrill-filled adventures that you may, or may not, want to experience alongside your teenager. It’s likely your signature (and credit card) will still be needed before they can head off on their own, but you don’t have to hold their hand the entire way.

A caveat: you know your child. They might have grown up doing some of these activities, or they might not. These are just some ideas and suggestions, but it’s always up to you as the parent/guardian to make the decision if this is an appropriate adventure for your teen.

Tube Park

Located just up Blackcomb Mountain at mid-station, the Tube Park is an easy activity for teens to do by themselves. They can use the Excalibur Gondola at the base of Whistler Mountain (no pass required – just don’t take skis) to get up to Base 2 and then follow the signs to the Tube Park – an easy, five-minute walk. They must be over 12 years old and be at least 41 inches tall (103 centimetres) to go by themselves.

You can buy a ticket online or in person at a Whistler Blackcomb guest relations window. There is a waiver that a parent/guardian who is over 16 needs to sign, but they can then go up by themselves. It’s open weekdays from 11 AM to 6 PM, and weekends from 10 AM to 6 PM  (depending on snow conditions).

Minimum age with an adult: Children must be at least three years of age and a minimum height of 36 inches (91 centimetres) tall to tube. Children between 36 inches (91 centimetres) and 41 inches (103 centimetres) tall are restricted to the mini-kids lane from the halfway point.

Bungee Jumping

There’s no minimum age for hucking yourself off a bridge, but the minimum weight to jump by yourself is 75 pounds (34 kilograms). However, you can go tandem with a friend or family member if you are between 50 – 75 pounds (23 – 34 kilograms) and fit into Whistler Bungee’s smallest harness.

To sign your own waiver, you need to be 16 years old, but a parent/guardian can sign a waiver ahead of time for someone under 16.

Ziplining

We have two incredible ziplining companies in Whistler who operate in different areas with different harness systems, which makes for different experiences. For both, the person signing the waiver must be 19 years of age (can be done ahead of time), but the minimum age to fly solo with Ziptrek EcoTours is 15, and Superfly Ziplines is 16.

Minimum age with an adult for Ziptrek is six years old and at least 75 pounds (34 kilograms). For Superfly, it’s seven years old and sixty pounds (27 kilograms).

Snowmobiling

You must have a valid driver’s license to operate a snowmobile, so that makes this a 16-years-plus activity for most nationalities. The Adventure Group will take 16-year-old drivers on their own, but the person signing the waiver must be 19 (can be done ahead of time). All other snowmobile companies have a minimum age of 19 for solo riders.

Minimum age with an adult: Your child can ride as a passenger with you driving. It’s dependent on the tour, but the age minimum is usually four / five years old and around four feet tall (they must also fit the smallest helmet and be able to securely hold onto the adult’s waist).

Bobsleigh and Skeleton

The minimum age to go alone on the Passenger Bobsleigh and/or Skeleton Experience is 16, with someone aged 19 or over signing the waiver (currently, this must be done on-site at the Sliding Centre). However, if your teen is interested in sliding sports, they do run development days (the Discover Program) and camps over the season that would be worth looking into, starting at age eight for luge, 14 for skeleton and 16 for bobsleigh.

Minimum age with an adult: Bobsleigh – 14 years of age during the winter and 12 during the summer. Skeleton – 16 years of age.

Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing at Whistler Olympic Park

There’s no minimum age requirement to explore the trails at Whistler Olympic Park, although it’s recommended that minors in general should not ski / snowshoe unsupervised, especially if they’re unfamiliar with the Park. However, should you decide to let your teen head out on their own they should be confident on skis and/or snowshoes, know where they are heading and confirm the route and duration of their trip with you (check out Adventure Smart for some good checklists).

If they need rental gear, it requires a waiver signed by someone who’s 19 or older (currently on location at Whistler Olympic Park). The biathlon (where they get to shoot a rifle) is a hit with the teens, and the age minimum is 10, so that’s another option. A cozy Day Lodge is on-site to hunker down in or regroup at for an après-activity lunch/snack.

Another area a bit closer to Whistler Village is Lost Lake Park, where teens can also have a go at cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and head out on the trails as long as an adult has completed the applicable rental and trail pass waivers on their behalf.

Vallea Lumina

For this magical, multimedia walk in the forest, you need to be at least 16 years of age to go without an adult. A free, return shuttle that goes from the Village out to Cougar Mountain, where it’s located – no waiver necessary.

There isn’t a minimum age restriction with an adult; it can be loud with lots of flashing lights, so if you’re exploring with a baby or toddler, bear that in mind. Read more about the experience in our blog, Magic in the Mountains: Winter Vallea Lumina.

Scandinave Spa Whistler

The Scandinave Spa is an outdoor relaxation experience set on the edge of Lost Lake. If your teen needs some time to unwind, they can go on a thermal journey using the hot pools, saunas and steam rooms, as well as the cold plunges and showers. There’s a mandatory digital-detox (no devices allowed), and a silence rule is enforced, which is perfect for those who need to switch off.

Teenagers aged 14 and 15 can go with an adult, whereas teens 16+ can go unaccompanied with a signed consent form. You can easily spend three hours on the thermal journey alone, or add a massage into the mix too.

Indoor Activities for Teens

Climbing at The Core

There’s a climbing wall at The Core, located next to the entrance of the Whistler Conference Centre, where they run guided climbing sessions and a Climb and Dine evening program. It’s perfect for kids up to 14 and includes dinner.

If your teen is an avid climber, they might be able to use the bouldering wall and the self-belay system on their own, but it’s on a case-by-case basis. Pop in and speak to the front desk team when you’re in Whistler.

Escape! Whistler

Did you know there’s a pirate ship in Whistler? It’s one of the themes for Escape! Whistler, where you’re tasked with solving puzzles to get out of a locked room within 45 minutes. An online waiver must be signed by someone 19 or over (can be done ahead of time), and the minimum age to go alone is 13.

There’s no minimum age with an adult; however, toddlers are notorious for making puzzles last a lot longer.

Audain Art Museum

It’s free for teens to visit the Audain Art Museum, and they can go by themselves (must be over 12 to be unaccompanied). They also have a Teen Art Collective program (for grades 10 to 12), which offers a safe, supportive space for teens to explore their thoughts and emotions through creative expression. 

Meadow Park Sports Centre

Whistler’s Meadow Park Sports Centre has a swimming pool (with steam and sauna), NHL-sized skating rink and fitness centre. If your teen likes hockey, then check out the drop-in schedule and public skate times (rental skates available). There are no age restrictions on the drop-in skating, but kids must be over seven-years-of-age to go swimming on their own, so teens are good to go!

Teens must be 16 years and up for the fitness centre and drop-in fitness classes, but there is a Youth on Weights program available for 13- to 15-year-olds who are keen. Buses run to and from the sports centre, making it a great option for older teens looking to get a bit of independence along with their workout.

Whistler Youth Centre

The Youth Centre is free and open to local and visiting teens on a drop-in basis. Located downstairs at the Maury Young Arts Centre (opposite the Brewhouse), it has a mini indoor skate ramp, video games, pool table, air hockey, foosball, ping pong, board games, art supplies and Wi-Fi access.

Whistler Public Library

Whistler’s library is a warm, inviting and inclusive space where teens can find a quiet space to chill out, do homework, collaborate on a project, access computers, download free movies and music and connect at events. They have teen-specific programs available that are worth taking a look at.

Getting in Some Eats

We asked some local teens where they like to eat – not surprisingly, pizza and ice cream are mentioned:

• La Cantina – for the tacos, cool vibe, and communal eating space
• Cow’s Whistler – so many ice cream flavours!
• Mongolie Grill – because you can choose what you get on your plate, and it’s fun watching the chefs cook it
• Avalanche Pizza – it’s pizza, need we say more?
• Zogs Dogs – try the poutine!
• Sushi Village – it’s fun to share sushi platters in one of the tatami rooms
• El Furniture Warehouse – yummy burgers and pumping tunes

Although we have set this post out to give you some ideas of how your teen could possibly spend time rolling without you in Whistler, we know family time is important too. Kids have a habit of pushing their parents out of their comfort zones, and sometimes that’s not such a bad thing.

Sleeping under the stars, telling stories around the fire (or flashlights) and following nature’s rhythms, these are the things that come to mind when we think of camping. It’s all so romantic, isn’t it? We usually leave the bug bites, cramped dishwashing and mysterious night noises conveniently out of the picture. But that’s because the experience always outweighs the minor discomforts.

In Whistler, you can find whatever camping experience you yearn for, whether you want to sleep on a real mattress or get up into the alpine and forget the rest of the world exists. Camping is a deeply beloved part of Canadian culture and should be on everyone’s bucket list to try at least once. But before you make your camping dreams a reality, you first need to know where to go, what to prepare for and how to respect the environment. Read on to get Whistler camping ready.

Car Camping and Glamping in Whistler

Riverside Resort

If you’re road-tripping or after a glamping experience, but still want the convenience of being close to everything, Riverside Resort is the spot for you. This is the closest campground to Whistler Village, it’s also near Green Lake, Nicklaus North Golf Course, cross-country biking trails and the Scandinave Spa. The Valley Trail connects it all so if you don’t even need to drive, you can walk or bike instead. Cabin rentals and RV sites are available in the winter as well.

• Multi-use camping sites
• Log cabins
• Yurts
• Tent

Whistler RV Park & Campground

At 20 minutes south of Whistler, this is the farthest campground from the Village. But it is close to the Callaghan Valley, which means plenty of opportunities for exploring. Whistler RV Park & Campground also has a lot to offer onsite, including; wiffle golf, frisbee golf, photo safari tours and more. The campground is perched over the valley and the vantage point offers fantastic mountain views, some of the sites look directly at the infamous stratovolcano, Black Tusk.

Winter RVing is available but the operators ask that guests check the conditions and call ahead as there is a 10% grade hill which can become challenging in snowstorms. But it is a great location for snowmobilers with easy access to trails!

Whistler Olympic Park

Whistler Olympic Park, located in the Callaghan Valley just south of Whistler, offers one of the newest campgrounds in the area.

Here there are 39 spacious campsites with both unserviced and full-serviced options. Aside from the picturesque views, here’s what you can find on-site:

• 20 RV sites (fully serviced)
• 19 multi-use sites (unserviced)
• Picnic tables
• Free WiFi
• Bear storage
• Fire pits
• Hot showers
• Laundry facilities
• A playground
• Access to hiking trails
• Shop

The Whistler Olympic Park campground is usually open from late June to late September.

Cal-Cheak Recreation Site

Cal-Cheak is part of the provincial park system and runs on a first-come, first-served basis. Most of the campsites include a fire pit (check the fire danger rating before using) and a picnic table. The campground is divided into three sections with over 50 sites. Some of these are big enough for an RV but there’s no power or hook-up.

The location is in the forest and between the Callaghan Creek and Cheakamus River, making it feel peaceful and farther away from the world than it really is. With access to a popular section of the river for white water kayaking, and hiking and biking trails, this is a great spot for those who like to get up and go about their adventures. Cal-Cheak is open from May – October.

• Trailer and RV (but with no services)

Overnight Hiking and Camping in Whistler

Camping at Russet Lake

The Russet Lake campground sits on an alpine lake below Fissile Peak, which is the peak you can see poking up between Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains from the Village. One of the oldest peaks in the area at an estimated 230 million years, it is made up of shale and sandstone which is what gives this mountain its unique reddish colouring.

Russet Lake is reachable by three different trails, Singing Pass, High Note and Musical Bumps. High Note and Musical Bumps are on top of Whistler Mountain and accessed by gondola, so you will need a sightseeing ticket. The hikes vary in length and difficulty but they all require a good level of fitness, preparation and backcountry knowledge. There are 20 backcountry camping sites (clearings not pads), and reservations are required and can be made through BC Parks. There is also a pit toilet but no cooking facilities or food storage.

As of 2019, there is now also a new hut – the Kees and Claire Memorial Hut. This modern building is the first of three planned huts for the Spearhead Traverse, and includes 38 bunks divided into six sleeping areas. There are also propane cooktops, cooking equipment, sleeping mats, and USB ports. You will need to make a reservation to stay in the Kees and Claire Hut.

Camping at Garibaldi Lake

Garibaldi Lake campground has 50 sites but campers must reserve ahead of time through BC Parks. It is one of the more popular overnight hikes in the Sea to Sky region due to its accessibility and incredible scenery. The campground rims the northwest section of the turquoise lake and offers stunning views of the Battleship Islands and Castle Towers Mountain. The campground facilities include; day-use cooking shelters, a sink with greywater disposal, picnic tables and pit toilets.

If you are unable to get a reservation at the Garibaldi Lake campground or want to explore further, check out Taylor Meadows campground (40 sites) or Helm campground (nine sites).

Camping at Wedgemount Lake

Wedgemount Lake campground has an emergency shelter hut and two different tent areas, one near the hut and another by the Armchair Glacier inlet, for a total of 20 available sites. Reservations are needed and can be made online through BC Parks. There are two pit toilets in the summer and a place to hang food but no garbage facilities, you will need to pack out what you pack in.

This is one of the more difficult hikes, and while it can be done in a day, making it not necessary to camp, the scenery will likely leave you wanting to stay longer. You can see both Wedgemount and Armchair glaciers from the lake and a plethora of peaks, including Wedge Mountain – the highest peak in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Wedgemount Lake campground also makes a great base camp for further exploration of the surrounding trails and mountains.

Camping at Cheakamus Lake

There are two campgrounds to choose from at this lake, the Cheakamus Lake campground (10 sites) which you reach first, and the Singing Creek campground (seven sites) farther down the lakeshore. Both sites require a reservation. There are pit toilets and food caches but the caches fill up during busier times so be prepared to hang your food.

This is the mellowest overnight hike in the area and due to the lower elevation, it is usually the first ready for summer camping. If you’re ambitious, you could portage a kayak, canoe or paddleboard along this trail.

Places to Go, Things to Sniff

Whether you’re looking for a quick pre-breakfast walk, an all-day excursion, a place to swim with your dog or just somewhere for your dog to rip around off-leash, there’s a spot for it.

Dog Parks in Whistler

Barking Bay

Barking Bay at Rainbow Park has a gorgeous dog dock complete with a ramp. It also has a grassy picnic area for you to relax on. Keep in mind this area is not totally fenced in, so make sure Rover doesn’t roam too far into the on-leash area.

Arfa Park

Arfa Park at Alpha Lake is fenced on three sides and sports a doggy dock. This park is equally great for games of fetch and for swimming!

Bayly Park

Bayly Park in the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood is the newest and the most secure dog park, with four fenced sides It also has an agility course, which is lots of fun for more active dogs who need to expend extra energy.

Canine Cove

Canine Cove at Lost Lake is a simple beach with no amenities, but your dog will be too busy playing fetch and swimming to care. It’s good to note that Lost Lake Park is inaccessible to dogs during the winter cross-country ski season.

Where to Walk Your Dog in Whistler

You don’t always have time for a longer trek so here are some scenic, shorter walks:

The Valley Trail

You can take your dog on any section of the paved Valley Trail. Close to the Village, the loop around the Whistler Golf Club is perfect for a quick walk (be sure to keep Rover on leash here, there are always lots of other dogs and the occasional bear).

Lost Lake Park

Lost Lake Park is easy to get to from Whistler Village and has a variety of trails. The easiest is the wide gravel loop around the lake. These trails are not open to the public (doggies included) during the winter when they are groomed for cross-country skiing instead.

Train Wreck

Train Wreck is a classic Whistler hike that’s short and mellow. The destination is five graffiti-covered wrecked boxcars which your pup will love to sniff around. Kids will love this trail too, if you have more than fur babies with you.

Dog-Friendly Hikes in Whistler

Do you have an energetic dog that needs a couple of hours of hiking to get tired out? Or maybe you want something a little more challenging for yourself? These are the ones for you:

Cheakamus River

The trail to the McLaurin’s Crossing suspension bridge over Cheakamus River  in the Whistler Interpretive Forest has rolling ups and downs along the bank of the river, with a neat historical suspension bridge to cross at the end. Your dog will enjoy the sounds and smells in the coastal temperate rainforest.

Ancient Cedars

The Ancient Cedars Trail is a hidden gem. You need a 4×4 vehicle to get to the trailhead, but if you can make it in along the bumpy service road and hike up, you’ll be impressed by the view of the Soo Valley. The giant cedar trees that the trail is named for are incredible – even Fido will think so.

Flank Trail

The Flank Trail is a long trail, stretching across the entire Whistler Valley from north to south. There is quite a bit of elevation gain and some fantastic viewpoints along the way. There are multiple entry points to the trail, so you can pick and choose what sections of the trail to do.

Tips and Tricks (more than shaking a paw)

Now that you’ve figured out where you’ll be staying and exploring with your dog, there are a few important things to remember in order to make your visit (and that of other visitors) truly top-notch.

• Dogs must be on-leash at all times within Whistler, except in the designated off-leash areas. This is for your dog’s safety and out of respect for passersby who may not be comfortable around dogs. Also, many local dogs in Whistler are adopted from the animal shelter, W.A.G., and may be using on-leash trails because they can’t handle being around off-leash dogs.
• If you do let Fido off-leash in one of the dog parks, make sure he has good recall. Not all the off-leash areas are entirely fenced in, and you don’t want Fido running off in an unfamiliar area.
• Pick up after your pet! No one wants to step in a pile of poop while out enjoying nature.
• The summer months can get very hot, so carry extra water for your pup if you plan to be hiking for a few hours.
• Wipe your dog’s paws off after you’ve been out for a walk in the winter. Whistler uses a lot of road salt in winter, which can be uncomfortable or even toxic to dogs.
• Coast Mountain Veterinary Services is the local clinic and Twin Trees Veterinary Clinic is the emergency vet.
• Dogs are not allowed to be tethered and left unattended anywhere in Whistler, this includes outside of shops and restaurants. Your doggy will not be permitted to sit with you inside a restaurant or on the patio either due to health code regulations.
• Visitors travelling with service dogs need to get their dogs registered in BC to enjoy access under the Guide and Service Dog Act

• Going ziplining? Many hotels don’t allow dogs to be left alone in rooms, so if you’re heading out for a non-dog friendly activity, local services Alpine Dogs and Whistler Dog Sitting both offer adventure dog walks for those times when you can’t bring Fido with you.

  Or consider a pet sitting app like Rover, that can connect you to local pet-sitters in the area that can take care of your dog while you’re out. The app is set up so sitters can share photos and updates while you’re away so you can be sure your furry friend is having as much fun as you are!

On a girls’ getaway, your accommodation becomes the team’s home base. When planning with my girlfriends, our main priorities are a central location, and a good common area to hang out in, so that’s what I looked for when compiling these suggestions.

Mountain Luxury

Located right at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler has every ingredient you need for a girls’ getaway. Their rooms are luxurious, the hot tubs are plentiful, and the Mallard Bar is something right out of a ski movie. Their signature G&T is the best in town, plus they have a chocolate tasting platter — make sure to try the Honeybear Blonde Chocolate, made with honey that comes right from their rooftop beehives!

Space & Convenience

If you’re looking for some common space so you can all hang-out together, a condo choice like Glacier’s Reach, or Granite Court with an in-unit kitchen could be a good option for you. They also have the added benefit of being just across the road from Marketplace Shopping Centre, home to a liquor and grocery store, making it easy to stock up on supplies.

On a map it can look like you’ll be a bit far from the lifts, but it’s actually a short walk and there is even a free bus that regularly runs from in front of your accommodation to the base of the lifts.

Lively & Central

To really be immersed in the energy of Whistler Village I recommend staying at a stroll-side hotel. From your room you’ll be just steps away from restaurants, bars, activities and shopping in the heart of Whistler.

Look for hotels like The Crystal Lodge, Delta Hotels by Marriott and Summit Lodge that combine a central location, great pools, and cool interiors as ideal options when planning.

A getaway with the girls can also be an opportunity for you all to recharge your batteries. These rejuvenating activities will help refresh both your minds and bodies.

Spa Day

It may be cliché, but a spa day with the girls is so good I just couldn’t leave it off of this list. You can indulge in classic spa treatments like massages and facials at one of our many local spas, or for a spa experience that’s a little outside of the box, I highly recommend a day at the Scandinave Spa. It’s a haven of relaxation, complete with hot tubs, eucalyptus steam rooms, saunas, solariums, and outdoor firepits. The hardest part of your day will be not talking, as they ask for quiet on site so you can completely disconnect. If you’re particularly chatty by nature, I recommend bringing a book to read to stay quietly occupied.

GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

It’s hard to imagine a girls’ getaway without busting out a few moves on a dance floor. From toe tapping in your ski boots at après, to dancing the night away in one of our thumping clubs, you have plenty of party options.

Après

In Whistler the party starts as soon as the skis/boards come off. These bars are known for getting pretty rowdy as the sun goes down. Their dress code is pure mountain, so keep those snow pants on and you’ll fit in just fine.

• The Garibaldi Lift Co. (GLC) – So close you could ski right onto their patio…if they let you.
• Handlebar Cafe and Apres – If you’re looking for locals, you’ll find them here, sipping quality craft beer.
• Longhorn Saloon & Grill – Mountainside views and margaritas. Their firepit seats are the place to be after a day on the slopes.
• Dusty’s Bar and Grill – The original home to Whistler’s party scene. Still kicking after almost half a decade.
• Alpina by Basalt – For a more sophisticated après experience. Their cocktails and charcuterie taste particularly good while sitting around their stroll-side firepit.

Dance Clubs

While all of our nightlife is consistently good on Friday and Saturdays, locals know that each bar also has a weekday night that is arguably more fun than the weekend. Try branching out from the weekend with these party nights.

• Après Après – Mondays
• Buffalo Bills – Wednesdays

LADIES WHO BRUNCH

If you’re hurting enough to sleep through breakfast, then you’ll definitely need a hearty brunch to bring you all back to life. Order some hair of the dog with a mimosa or Caesar, or cleanse your body with refreshing pressed juice, and fill up on some hearty food.

“I showed up in town in the late 1990’s and couldn’t find anywhere to live,” he says. “But I got lucky, ended up crashing with some family friends, and they just let me stay.”

It didn’t hurt that those family friends were a couple of national team snowboarders, or that his neighbour was one of Whistler’s best DJs, but Stephen quickly found his niche. Working at the Westin Whistler Resort & Spa for the past 17 years, Stephen is one of Whistler’s most celebrated concierges and a member of Les Clefs d’Or, a super prestigious organization of the world’s best concierges.

“Whistler is full of so many awesome things and people,” he says. “I get to connect the dots.”

So with the holiday season on the horizon, The Insider hooked up with Stephen to learn a few top concierge tips on how to prepare for your Whistler winter holiday, long before you arrive. Take it away Sir!

Concierge Tip #1 Dinner Reservations

Everybody has to book ahead. Especially for dinner reservations, especially if you are a large group, and especially-especially over the holidays. Really, this is probably the most important of all my concierge tips, and you want to get on that as soon as you possibly can. As more families come to town those early dinner time slots fill up quicker than ever. And in the winter, everything starts and stops with the mountain. People come down from skiing, they want to change and feed the kids.

Concierge Tip #2 Ski Lessons

It’s the same as dinner – book as early as you can. If you’re expecting to just roll up and throw the kids in lessons in between Christmas and New Year’s you might be in for a surprise. Private lessons are a great way to go if you can afford it but I think the best value is the ‘Ski with an Olympian’ program. It’s like a private lesson but your guide is someone who has spent their whole life here and knows the town, mountains and culture better than anyone.

Concierge Tip #3 Secret Stashes

The Dave Murray Downhill is easily the best cruising run on either mountain. Hit that run in good conditions, top to bottom, and it doesn’t get any better. For pow, if you can get into the Peak Chair line up early and get untracked turns down Shale Slope, like the first 20 people in, that is like a heli lap. No, it’s better than a heli lap because its steeper and you can slay pow while the whole chair line watches from below.

Whistler Blackcomb offers free mountain tours that meet daily at 11:15 AM (departing 11:30 AM) at the top of both mountains. These tours are a great way to orientate yourself and get some more local slope-based tips. 

Concierge Tip #4 Off the Ski Hill Activities

There are plenty of off-mountain activities and tours on offer, from snowmobiles to helicopters, and Nordic skiing to Vallea Lumina. But really, anything that gets you out into the wilderness is a good bet. Snowshoeing or dog sledding are good, kids love the dog sledding. The idea is to escape out into the wild, get out there where it is so insanely quiet and wild, with mounds of snow everywhere. Most people have never seen anything like it and it’s one of the best concierge tips I have to suggest.

Concierge Tip #5 Getting Around

If you are staying in the Village all you really need is the old ‘heel-toe express’—you can walk almost anywhere. You might need to buy better footwear when you arrive—high heels are tough in a snowstorm—but walking is the best. The transit system is good, some of the hotels have their own shuttles, and there are lots of cabs – but make sure you give yourself enough time ordering one.

Concierge Tip #6 Family Fun

If the weather is not great on the mountain you might want to find something to entertain the kids. There’s always something on during the holidays. Otherwise, the rooms at Escape! Whistler, singing sessions at Whistler Public Library for really young kids, or the climbing wall at the Core.

Concierge Tip #7 Party/Après

The good news is it hasn’t really changed in 20 years. The best après spots are right at the bottom of the hill and there are lots of options. For a bit of a more high-end après The Bearfoot Bistro has oysters and fondue then you can dip into the Vodka ice room if you want.

Whistler nightlife is good all the time. Ask around, check the event calendar on Whistler.com or in the Pique NewsMagazine if you want live music – but it’s hard not to find a solid après spot in this place. For over 30s, one of my best concierge tips is to go to Buffalo Bills because the music might be too young at the other clubs, the audience too. But Brandy’s is open to 2 AM, they have good food, a DJ on weekends and it always kicks.

Concierge Tip #8 Best Time to Come

For the younger crowd it’s hard to beat the World Ski & Snowboard festival in April. That’s endless fun. But for families I think mid-to-late March is the sweet spot. The mountains are really filled in with snow, the Treefort and Magic Castle on-hill attractions are hopping, same with the tube park, and the days are a bit longer, so you have more time to play.
