In fact, there are so many winter activities that it’s hard to squeeze them all into one trip. Whistler’s Vallea Lumina

When it starts to get dark in the late afternoon, it’s time to head to the forest. Vallea Lumina is a multimedia, story-driven light show where you walk a winding one-kilometre path through the forest at the base of Cougar Mountain (it takes about 45 minutes). Outdoor Ice Skating in Whistler & the Snow Zone

Located in the heart of the village, skating at Olympic Plaza is both beginner-friendly and photogenic. The rink features multi-coloured hanging icicles, is set against a picturesque mountain backdrop and is surrounded by Dr. Seuss-esque LED-wrapped trees.

It’s located right next to the Snow Zone, where they build available snow into toboggan runs and tube slides.

Meadow Park Sports Centre is another option for indoor skating, pool fun and gym time.

Best Time to Go: Take advantage of people being on the slopes and go in the morning and early afternoon. It does close at certain times for ice maintenance, so check the hours before you go.

Sightsee on Whistler Blackcomb: Ride the PEAK 2 PEAK

Riding on gondolas and standing on top of mountains isn’t just for skiers and snowboarders. With a sightseeing pass, you can even soar between them on the world-record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.

Have lunch at one of the mountaintop lodges, Roundhouse on Whistler Mountain, or Rendezvous on Blackcomb Mountain. For a special lunch, book at either Christine’s or Steeps for Pacific Northwest elevated comfort cuisine with beautiful BC wines.

Best Time to Go: Winter sightseeing usually opens mid-morning. When you’re not chasing fresh pow lines, you can afford to take things slow. So, take your time, enjoy brunch in the village, then venture up to see the sights and grab a late lunch in the alpine.

Go Sightseeing in the Whistler Valley

Head out on a sightseeing tour to get the lay of the land and a wider sense of what makes Whistler the incredible place it is. With Whistler Valley Tours, you head out with a local guide and driver for a three-hour sightseeing adventure covering the entire Whistler Valley.

You visit Green Lake, Rainbow Park, Creekside, Function Junction’s local artisan district and Olympic venues such as the world’s fastest bobsled track at The Whistler Sliding Centre.

Best Time to Go: We suggest doing this at the start of your stay and earlier in the day so you can get some good mountain vistas.

Free Self-Guided Tours

Download the free Go Whistler Tours app for a curated selection of self-guided tours. The app helps with a suggested route, navigation, warm-up stop ideas, and information on the history and ecology along the way. There’s even audio that plays automatically when you hit each spot, should you want some local narration along the way.

Best Time to Go: Anytime, although the Festive Light Tours are best when the sun is down, after 4 PM.

Fire & Ice Show

Starting in January, the free Fire & Ice Show happens on Sunday evenings at the base of Whistler Mountain in Skier’s Plaza (Whistler Village). Wrap up warm for this 30-minute show that features Whistler’s top skiers and riders flipping and twisting through a burning hoop.

Each show starts with the legend of Spo7ez, a village shared by the Squamish Nation and the Lil’wat Nation, and a performance by world champion hoop dancer Alex Wells. This show is definitely a jaw-dropper and a good reason to extend your stay beyond the weekend.

Best Time to Go: January to March at 7:30 PM in Skier’s Plaza (weather dependent/dates subject to change).

High-Adrenaline Activity Options in Whistler

Whistler Bungee

Seeing the mountains from a bird’s-eye view is spectacular as you grasp just how vast the valley is, with white-covered trees and craggy mountain tops stretching to the horizon.

There are varying levels at which one can make like a bird in Whistler, one of which is to attempt to imitate a diving peregrine falcon (the fastest bird in the world) as you launch into thin air over the glacier-fed Cheakamus River with Whistler Bungee; read more in Whistler Bungee Jumping: On Fear, Gravity and Getting Old.

Best Time to Go: The early bird gets the worm? What better way to wake up the senses!

Whistler Ziplining & Whistler Heli Tours

Scale back the diving falcon and opt for ziplining, with options for tackling three to five lines as you flit around the mountains, taking in the views with the wind in your hair. Bonus points if you go upside down on the lines!

Best Time to Go: Morning and early afternoon for the best views, although ziplining in the dark is also really cool.

Snowmobiling in Whistler

Whistler has vast backcountry terrain, and one way to get out there is via a snowmobile, with tours for beginners and families to expert riders. Ice Climbing in Whistler

Imagine swinging an axe and digging your crampons into blue sculpted ice for the day. No experience is necessary for a Whistler ice climbing experience with the experts at Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures. Located on Blackcomb Mountain, your guides give you all the equipment and instruction you need to dig that axe in and scale the ice.

Indoor climbing is also available at Whistler Core Climbing and Fitness Gym, and can be a great activity for kids who need to burn off extra energy.

Best Time to Go: This is a full, 8-hour day experience!

Olympic Experiences in Whistler: Bobsleigh and Skeleton

Family-Friendly Winter Activities in Whistler

bubly Tube Park

If you love tobogganing but hate walking uphill, we have just the activity for you – snow tubing. Through the wonders of modern engineering, the bubly Tube Park has managed to eliminate the worst part of tobogganing (the uphill slog). The magic carpet does the hard work of getting you (and your kids) up to the top, the cushy tubes are easy on the backside, and the shaped lanes keep you safely on the track.

To get there, jump on the Excalibur Gondola in Whistler Village (you don’t need a ticket), get off at mid-station and follow the signage to the tube park. Note: there are stairs on this route, so another option is to park in Lot 8.

Best Time to Go: You can’t book ahead for the Tube Park; it’s first-come, first-served and based on capacity, so being strategic with timing is a good call – get in before it gets busy when people head down off the slopes!

Snowcoach Sleigh Tour

This Whistler sleigh tour requires no horses! Wrap up under cozy blankets and enjoy the peaceful backcountry views as a snowcat pulls you through forest trails covered in snow.

You journey to a jolly Holiday Dome where you warm up with cookies and hot apple cider. They also have toboggans for some good-natured fun in the snow. This is good for families with younger children, but it’s also quite a romantic idea for people looking to ask important life questions.

Best Time to Go: The rides start after noon and go into the early evening. If you’re after stunning backcountry views, opt for daytime, and the early evening for a more romantic, under-the-stars experience.

Escape! Whistler

Did you know that there’s a pirate ship in Whistler? With six different escape rooms at Escape! Whistler, this is an activity you’ll want to do more than once. You have 45 minutes to puzzle your way out of your chosen room. This is a great activity for families and groups of two to six people.

Best Time to Go: A great late afternoon/après activity that’s fun to talk about over dinner.

Outdoor Winter Activities Beyond Downhill Skiing

Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing in Whistler

If you’re looking for something that breaks a sweat, Whistler has 55 kilometres of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails for you to tackle out at Whistler Olympic Park, 40 kilometres at The Callaghan and another 25 kilometres at Lost Lake Park, located right in Whistler Village (Whistler Olympic Park and Lost Lake also offer night skiing).

Snowshoeing is another outdoor activity in Whistler that can be a thigh burner or a peaceful experience in the surrounding old-growth forest, perfect for relaxing the mind. You’ll very quickly notice the quiet stillness of nature, and if you’re lucky enough to get out after a fresh snowfall, the loaded trees can look like something straight out of a Dr. Seuss book.

Best Time to Go: If you’re heading to Whistler Olympic Park, spend the day there as it’s a 20-minute drive south of Whistler Village.

Ice Fishing in Whistler

Soak in the serenity of the wild outdoors while catching your dinner. Whistler’s ice fishing season runs from December to March, and full and half-days can be booked online.

Whistler Year-Round Fishing and Pemberton Fish Finder are two local companies offering ice fishing tours, and even though “ice” fishing is weather-dependent, there are always lakes and rivers to access in the Sea to Sky. Read more about this experience in How to Ice Fish in Whistler.

Arts, Culture and Indoor Activities in Whistler

Art may not be the first thing that comes to your mind when thinking of Whistler, but we are actually home to a thriving arts scene. It’s not hard to see why creatives are drawn to Whistler’s soaring peaks and lush valleys. From the living cultures and artistic traditions of the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation, to contemporary galleries and performances, Whistler offers plenty of ways to connect with art, culture and community.

Audain Art Museum

The Audain Art Museum boasts an impressive permanent collection of British Columbian art, including several commissioned sculptures by contemporary First Nations artists, a gallery dedicated to Emily Carr and a large space for its rotating Special Exhibitions. Best Time to Go: The Audain is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, opens late morning, and you need at least one to two hours. Check their hours before you go and look out for their guided tours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – we highly recommend these.

Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre

We always suggest a visit to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) to gain an understanding of the land, Whistler’s history and the Indigenous people who have inhabited it since time immemorial.

Their tours start with a welcome song, a short film and a guided tour of the exhibits with a Cultural Ambassador. They also have a beautiful gift shop and a cafe with an Indigenous-inspired menu including Bannock Tacos, Venison Chilli and Salmon Chowder. Best Time to Go: Tours start on the hour, so plan around that. We suggest going for lunch at the Thunderbird Cafe as part of the experience. Allow one to two hours for your visit, and check out the craft workshops they have on offer.

Arts Whistler

Whistler’s got a fantastic arts scene, and the best place to find out all about it is the Maury Young Arts Centre, the home of Arts Whistler. There’s a free gallery to explore as well as a Sea to Sky artisan shop. They also host comedy nights, arts-based workshops, live music nights, performances and movies.

Whistler Museum and Whistler Public Library

Have you ever wondered how a place like Whistler came to be? The Whistler Museum has an extensive exhibit on the creation of Whistler Blackcomb, the design of Whistler Village, the Olympic bid history and more.

Best Time to Go: The Whistler Museum is open daily from 11 AM, and entrance is by donation.

The Whistler Public Library is also right next door and typically has something fun going on. These two locations can be found on the Cultural Connector Tour on the free Go Whistler Tours app.

Best Time to Go: Everyone is welcome at the Whistler Public Library, and it’s open daily. Check their calendar for adult- and children-based events.

Fathom Stone Art Gallery

Carve your own BC stone artwork at Fathom Art Gallery, located inside the Westin Resort & Spa. Choose from pendants, ornaments, and Inuksuks, with classes ranging from one to two hours, up to six-plus hours for larger carving projects.

The classes are family-friendly, and no experience is needed. Instructors guide you through choosing your soapstone, sketching, carving, sanding and polishing, and you leave with your sculpture the same day.

Insider Tip: They even offer to watch your kiddos if they’re happy carving while you get a few laps in.

Take a Tour of Montis Distilling

Whistler has several craft breweries and a distillery. Most of these are located in Function Junction, about 15 minutes south of Whistler Village. Whistler Valley Tours also offers sightseeing during the winter.

Best Time to Go: Tours happen on Fridays and Saturdays in the late afternoon and take around two hours.

Spas, Wellness and Relaxing Things to Do in Whistler

Whistler’s Spas

An outdoor spa in Whistler in the winter, what? The Scandinave Spa Whistler is a tranquil oasis that’s found on the edge of Lost Lake’s forest. Encouraging you to invigorate your body through a thermal journey (going from hot to cold), this spa has hot baths, cold plunge pools, Swedish dry saunas, eucalyptus-infused steam rooms and relaxing solariums, all set in the beauty of nature. Yoga, Pilates & Dance

Stretch it out in the studio. Yogacara, Reform Whistler and ALGN are all located right in the heart of Whistler Village, and you can do drop-in sessions. We caught up with local yoga instructor Emily Kane, and she took us through some handy pre-adventure stretches and poses in Pre and Post Mountain Yoga Stretches for Skiers and Snowboarders.

Hit Some Balls

The Whistler Racket Club is something of a hidden gem. It is multi-purpose, with sporting activities such as indoor and outdoor tennis (summer only), pickleball, cornhole and axe throwing.

Not to mention, the cafe and patio serve tasty snack foods and all your favourite drinks, making it a great place to spend an evening trying your hand at different activities and grabbing a bite with a few friends. It’s open into the evening and is an easy walk from the Village.

Another place you can hit some balls is at Whistler Golf Club and Nicklaus North Golf Course. They both have simulators where you can practice that swing all year.

When to Do This: Anytime of the day!

Axe Throwing in Whistler

Forged Axe Throwing is open nightly until 9 PM, making it one of the best Whistler evening activities, whether there’s just one or two of you or an entire group. It’s very easy to try, and your session will include demonstrations, tips, and safety protocols. Plus, the guides are always happy to help you nail some trick shots. They are located in Function Junction, and it’s good to note that Coast Brewing is right next door!

When to Do This: We would roll this into spending a few hours in Function Junction. You can drive, catch a bus or take a taxi, as it’s about 10 minutes south of Whistler Village. Explore the shops, art galleries, cafes and breweries and then go throw some axes!

Whistler Winter Planning Tips: Booking Ahead & Seasonal Considerations

Our biggest tip for activities in Whistler is to book ahead. Most companies offer good cancellation policies for changing plans, so it’s better to book than be disappointed.

Whistler’s winter is long and has its subtle changes and nuances. Late November and early December embody the magic of the festive season and are when the mountains open for the season, whereas January and February are considered deep winter, and March and April bring the longer, sunnier days of spring. I’d seen photos of the ice caves before, but nothing prepared me for what it would actually feel like to stand inside one. So on a warm summer morning, I joined Beyond Whistler’s Immersive Experience to explore one of the most remote and remarkable landscapes in British Columbia.

If you want to experience a new side of Whistler, here’s everything you need to know.

Journey to The Pemberton Icefield

Covering roughly 300 square kilometres, the Pemberton Icefield is a massive network of glaciers, deep crevasses, and natural ice caves located just west of Whistler, on the shared territories of the Lil’wat Nation (L̓il̓wat7úl) and the Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh).

Wind, meltwater, and ice pressure constantly shape the landscape, so what you see one season can look completely different the next, which is part of what makes each visit so unique. There are no trails, no roads, and no shortcuts to the ice caves, allowing visitors to explore a truly remote part of the mountains that most people never get to see. 

“It’s an incredible privilege to guide guests through this landscape,” says Marc Cousineau, Partner and General Manager at Beyond Whistler. “Our goal is to do so with the utmost respect for the land and the remarkable places we have the opportunity to explore.” 

Beyond Whistler’s Ice Cave Immersive Experience

So, what’s on the itinerary?

Lift Off from Whistler

Our trip begins at the Whistler Heliport, where we meet Marc, Partner and General Manager at Beyond Whistler, and Marty, our Mountain Guide. They go over everything we’ll need to know for our adventure, and with our gear on, we walk over to Blackcomb Helicopters to prepare for our flight (they offset 100% of their carbon footprint).

The helicopter feels like an experience in itself, as we fly over the ancient forests of the Soo Valley and into the Coast Mountains. Over the eight- to 15-minute flight, our pilot points out rivers, mountain peaks and even a volcano, before landing on the glacier in the heart of the Pemberton Icefield.

Touch Down on the Pemberton Icefield

As we step out onto the ice and breathe in the crisp alpine air, it feels like we’ve arrived in a place truly untouched. Surrounded by snow and glacial plains, the vast landscape stretches out in every direction. Despite standing on ancient ice, the summer sun brought the temperature up to almost 18°C, and I immediately understood why the guides recommended wearing sunscreen.

After taking in the sweeping views of the Coast Mountains, Marty hands us our spikes and our helmets and leads us across the glacier toward the first hidden ice cave.

Whistler Ice Cave Exploration

This is where everything shifts. At first, I can barely make out the entrance hidden beneath the snow, but following Marty inside, a completely different world begins to emerge. The sound changes. The light changes. Even the temperature feels different.

In the caves, the ice walls glow with a vibrant natural light, a luminescence shifting from pale blue to deep sapphire as it filters through centuries-old ice. The air is still, the colours almost unreal, and every turn reveals a new ice formation carved by nature itself.

As Marty leads us deeper into the caves, he shares more about the icefield and the care that’s taken to explore it responsibly – ensuring every visit leaves as little impact as possible. They follow the Leave No Trace philosophy, keep group sizes deliberately small, and anything brought to the environment is taken back out or is temporary.

Back outside, we climb into the Can-Am side-by-side and race across the glacier toward another section of the icefield. The ride itself feels like part of the adventure, weaving between gentle snow-covered ridges before arriving at an entirely different cave.

Inside, we’re greeted by an enormous frozen waterfall stretching from floor to ceiling. Hours feel like minutes as we wander through winding passages, stopping often to simply take it all in. Every corner reveals something new, and we become completely absorbed in a landscape that feels almost impossible to describe.

Après Ice Cave

The perfect ending to an incredible day? Of course, après. Our group unwinds with a gourmet charcuterie spread of local produce from Picnic Whistler, along with a crisp glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne, while we take in the stunning Coast Mountain views.

Journey Home

Before we know it, it’s already time to head back on board the helicopter for one last adventure. Looking back across the icefield from above, I find myself appreciating just how vast and wild this landscape really is. Within minutes, we’re already back in Whistler, but it feels as though we’ve travelled much farther than the distance on the map.

Go Beyond The Ordinary in Whistler

Some experiences stay with you long after the journey ends.

Standing inside a glowing ice cave, surrounded by walls of ice carved by centuries of shifting glaciers, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of wonder. It’s a rare glimpse into a landscape that few people ever experience – and a reminder that there are still places waiting to be discovered.

A Valley with a Much Longer History

Whistler’s story did not begin with tourism or skiing.

The Valley of Dreams Walking Tour begins by acknowledging that Whistler is located within the shared, unceded territory of the Líl̓wat7úl Nation and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, whose peoples have travelled through and used the region for thousands of years.

The valley served as a trade and transportation corridor and supported fishing, hunting, and other activities long before the development of the modern resort and the arrival of tourism. This history extends far beyond the scope of a walking tour focused primarily on the development of tourism in Whistler.

Visitors wishing to learn more about the histories, cultures, and contemporary communities of the Líl̓wat7úl Nation and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation are strongly encouraged to visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) in Whistler’s Upper Village.

A Dream on the Shores of Alta Lake

Long before chairlifts carried skiers up Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, visitors were drawn to the valley for a very different kind of vacation.

In 1911, Myrtle and Alex Philip travelled from Vancouver to visit the area after hearing stories of its lakes, mountains, and fishing. The journey took three days, but what they found inspired them to return. In 1913, they purchased land on the shores of Alta Lake and began building Rainbow Lodge.

Their timing proved fortunate. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway reached Alta Lake in 1914, reducing the journey from Vancouver from several days to about nine hours. The railway and Rainbow Lodge soon offered a $6 “Fishermen’s Excursion,” including train travel and a weekend at the lodge.

The first excursion brought 24 fishermen and helped launch a new era of tourism in the valley. By the 1930s, Rainbow Lodge had expanded to include dozens of buildings and offered fishing, hiking, boating, horseback riding and other activities. Whistler, then known as Alta Lake, had become a popular summer destination.

Dreaming of a Mountain Resort

The next big dream would transform the valley from a quaint summer destination into a popular international winter ski destination. Following the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in California, a group of Vancouver businessmen began considering whether British Columbia could host the Games.

The Garibaldi Olympic Development Association was formed in 1962, led by Franz Wilhelmsen, and eventually selected London Mountain, today’s Whistler Mountain, as the location for a proposed ski area.

Their first bid – to host the 1968 Olympic Winter Games – was unsuccessful. At the time, the valley had no proper road access, power, running water or ski lifts. But the larger idea survived. Garibaldi Lifts Ltd. was formed to develop the mountain, and on January 15, 1966, Whistler Mountain officially opened with a gondola, chairlift and two T-bars.

The Olympic dream would have to wait, but the dream of creating a major mountain resort was underway.

Building a Village from the Ground Up

Whistler Mountain’s success brought rapid growth, and in 1975 the Resort Municipality of Whistler was established as Canada’s first resort municipality. One of the new municipality’s greatest challenges was creating a town centre for the growing community and resort.

The Whistler Village visitor experience today owes much to landscape architect Eldon Beck. With direction from the newly formed council to create a pedestrian-focused village, Beck envisioned a village that flowed through the landscape.

The Village Stroll was designed to meander, encouraging people to slow down, wander, and discover new spaces. Plazas created gathering places, while delivery areas, parking entrances, and much of the infrastructure needed to operate the resort were tucked behind the buildings.

The design also created a strong sense of place, with carefully considered viewpoints connecting the Village Stroll to the surrounding mountains. Construction began in 1978, with the first phase completed in 1980, the same year Blackcomb Mountain opened for skiing.

As you walk through the Village today, the tour reveals how many features that now seem natural were the result of deliberate, and sometimes unconventional, ideas for the time in North America.

The Olympic Dream Becomes Reality

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Whistler continued its transformation from a regional ski destination into an international one. During this period, Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain operated as competitors, and their rivalry helped push both mountains to greater heights as they added new lifts, terrain and better amenities.

By 1992, Whistler’s growing international reputation was recognized when Snow Country Magazine named Whistler Resort the Number One Ski Resort in North America, the first of many similar accolades. The two mountains’ operations eventually merged in 1997.

All the while, Whistler’s Olympic ambitions remained.

There were multiple attempts over the decades, but it was not until July 2, 2003, that Vancouver and Whistler were awarded the opportunity to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Seven years of preparation followed.

Then, in February and March 2010, Whistler welcomed athletes and visitors from around the world as an Olympic and Paralympic host community. The Games themselves were held on the territories of four Host First Nations: Líl̓wat7úl Nation, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nation, Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Nation, and səlilwətaɬ Nation.

The Valley of Dreams Walking Tour concludes around Olympic Plaza, connecting one of Whistler’s earliest ambitions with the international mountain destination it had become.

Nearly 40 Years of Sharing Whistler’s Stories

The Valley of Dreams Walking Tour is presented by the Whistler Museum & Archives Society, which has spent nearly 40 years collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of Whistler. Through photographs, artefacts, documents, oral histories, exhibitions, and community programs, the Museum preserves the stories of the people and events that have shaped the valley.

The walking tours take those stories beyond the Museum walls and into the places where much of that history happened.

Tours are led by local guides, each bringing their own knowledge and experiences to Whistler’s story. Whether you are visiting Whistler for the first time, working here for a season, or have been coming for years, the tour offers a chance to look at familiar places from a different perspective.

After all, Whistler as we know it today began with people looking at this valley and dreaming of what might be possible. The Valley of Dreams Walking Tour departs from the Whistler Visitor Centre at 11 AM daily from June through the end of September. Tours take approximately one hour and are offered by donation (private tours are available upon request).

Whether you’re chasing an alpine sunset, getting in some cooler bike park laps or kicking back on a patio, here’s how to make the most of Whistler’s summer evening bliss.

1. Harbour Air Float Plane Tours: Golden Hour Flight

For a literal high-altitude twist on evening adventure, an early evening float plane flight with Harbour Air offers an unforgettable transition into golden hour. The 5 PM Spectacular Glacier Tour takes you from the glacier-fed waters of Green Lake into the skies soaring above the Garibaldi Ranges. 

As the evening sun hits the alpine, it creates a stunning saturation of colours across Cheakamus, Garibaldi and Green Lake. From above, terrain continues to unfold into an ever-changing palette. Grey and blue hues of ancient glaciers, deep green from vast old-growth forests, vibrant patches of lush alpine meadows and jagged peaks that stretch into the horizon.

And finally, T’ákt’akmúten tl’a Ín7inyáx̱a7en / Q̓elqámtensa ti Skenknápa / Black Tusk. Standing on its own, it pays homage to a fiery past. Find out more about this peak at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre.

Once you step back on the dock and peer up at the peaks you just traversed, it delivers a humbling sense of the valley’s true magnitude and how lucky we are to experience it.

2. Sunset Thermal Therapy at Scandinave Spa Whistler

As the day winds down, Scandinave Spa offers the ultimate “pause” for an adventure-packed Whistler itinerary. Unique to the summer, Scandinave offers Sunset Sessions, which go from 7 to 10 PM. 

Wind your way through an outdoor thermal journey with wood-burning saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms, hot tubs, cold plunges and outdoor relaxation zones like their Hammock Haven. Just minutes from the Village bustle, it provides an intimate and unhurried sanctuary to unwind and reset. 

Marketing manager Bridey Payne notes, “Rest today, go big again tomorrow”.

With glowing pathways and flickering fires, the slower evening pace invites you to ditch the clock. Tucked into the old-growth forest, it’s the most peaceful spot to watch the day come to an end.

3. Free Music Concerts & Movies at Whistler Olympic Plaza

Nothing brings the town together on a summer’s evening better than a free outdoor show at Whistler Olympic Plaza. 

Summer Concert Series – On select Thursday and Friday evenings in July and August, live music fills Whistler Olympic Plaza. Artists from around the world perform their hits against the backdrop of the Coastal Mountains, defining warm summer nights in the Village.

Free Movies at Olympic Plaza – Bring your camping chairs, blankets and snacks for a unique cinema experience. Wednesday and Saturday nights unfold under the stars with timeless classics and recent releases.

4. Sunsets on Whistler Blackcomb

Mountain Top Summer Feast

Imagine being at 1,800 metres (6,000 feet) up the mountains as the sun disappears over the peaks, with a mouthwatering buffet laid out and live music playing. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Mountain Top Summer Feasts keep the alpine open longer, with the last seating at 6:30 PM.

You can stay up there after a day of hiking, or head up the gondolas at 4 PM with your Feast ticket. If you’re looking for a table with a view, this is it. 360-degree views of the Coast Mountain range are guaranteed. Pack an extra layer, as it does get cooler when the sun drops.

Crystal Hut Salmon Bake

Journey up Blackcomb Mountain via ATV or Jeep in the summer months to dine at the Crystal Hut. You wind up trails that cut across the ski runs, past mountain wildflowers and trickling streams. The rustic hut sits at 6,000 feet overlooking the Whistler Valley below, and once the sun disappears, it’s over to the stars.

In true Canadiana-style, the menu includes maple-glazed wild BC Salmon, local vegetables, fresh salads and dessert. As you take in the glowing views below and above, live music starts. It’s no wonder that this tour often sees a few proposals each summer! Read more in our dedicated blog.

5. Mountain Bike Social Nights

Join the local mountain bike scene with WORCA’s Toonie Rides and the legendary Monday Night Rides. Thursday night Toonies offer a chance to explore a dedicated course, grab a meal and rub shoulders with local hotshots. 

Monday Night Rides welcome all ability levels with five guided groups ranging from beginner to advanced. For a toonie, you’ll get a Clif bar, a beer and a direct connection to the local riding community.   

Twilight in the Whistler Bike Park is another local tradition. Cooler temperatures, smaller crowds and the occasional bear sighting make evenings iconic. With the setting sun illuminating some of A-Line’s most iconic jumps, there’s nothing better than party laps with the crew. Check out Men’s Nights, Women’s Nights and Phat Wednesdays for additional evening fun. 

6. Summer Sunsets at Whistler’s Lakes

Whistler’s lake scene embodies a certain peace in the evenings. Gone are the lively beaches and docks of the day that feel more energetic than relaxing. Grab some take-out and head down to the docks at Alta or Lost Lake to catch the sun dip behind Sproat Mountain. Don’t forget your bathing suit! 

Alternatively, pack a paddleboard or hire a canoe for a regenerative evening paddle on glassy water. Dusk is an active time for water-loving animals, so you might spot some on an evening cruise.

7. Whistler’s Summer Patio Scene

As the shadows lengthen across the Village, Whistler’s vibrant evening patio scene turns on. From high-energy bars to serene lakeside dining, whatever vibe you’re after, you’ll find it. Here are a few of my favourites:

Dubh Linn Gate – Whistler’s legendary Irish pub features a patio chock-full of heaters, fire pits and soft lighting for cool evening nights. Catch live music by local acts like Taylor James, Ruckus Deluxe and more.    

Table Nineteen – escape to the glacier-fed shores of Green Lake for an upscale dining experience. It’s Whistler’s most scenic patio located on the world-class Nicklaus North Golf Course. Lakeside Lounge at Nita Lake Lodge in Creekside is another lakeside favourite.

Earls Kitchen + Bar – comfortably familiar and upscale casual is this chain restaurant. Enjoy one of Whistler’s best Happy Hours from a perfectly positioned patio.

Other mentions: Make it Araxi’s patio if you’re looking for high-end. For a hidden patio, try Bearfoot Bistro and Quattro. For people-watching, go for Balam and Beacon Pub. Full-party mode: The Longhorn Saloon and Amsterdam Pub.

8. A Sunset With the Bears: Guided Tours

Humans aren’t the only species that thrive in the evening. Whistler’s resident black bears emerge from the rainforest like clockwork as temperatures cool. Motivated by an evening appetite, they are frequently spotted foraging, strolling and playing through the valley.  

The best way to catch a glimpse of these beloved mountain cows is to hop on a guided bear tour and drive up mountain roads in the safety of off-road vehicles. Statistically, sunset tours offer the best chance at spotting bears. 

9. Twilight Tee Times

As the afternoon heat fades, Whistler’s four world-class golf courses offer some of the most scenic fairways in the country. Teeing off in the late afternoon means cooler mountain breezes, unhurried holes and softer light. Driving ranges and practice zones are calmer, giving you a slower pace to warm up before a round.  

Whether you’re driving a full 18 holes or playing a relaxed back-nine, twilight golf in Whistler blends a precise game with alpine tranquillity.

10. Golden Hour Rallies: Racket Sports in the Park

It’s no secret Whistler loves its racket sports. Fun fact: a lot of the resort’s neighbourhood parks have tennis and pickleball courts. These courts are free and are first-come, first-served. Packing a racket is simple, low-cost, and easy for groups and families. More structured clinics, organized socials, and bookable courts are also available through the Whistler Racket Club.

Where Will the Evening Take You?

Whistler’s summer evenings illustrate that the adventure doesn’t stop when the sun dips behind the peaks.

Whether you’re soaring over ancient glaciers, soaking in thermal waters or relaxing on a glowing patio, Whistler evenings invite you to slow down and savour every last drop of summer. For in the mountains, summer is as swift as a shadow and short as any dream. May you enjoy yours.

Rain in the forecast? Whistler has plenty of indoor fall activities, including museums and cultural attractions, escape rooms, axe throwing, yoga and spa experiences, but my advice would be to put a good rain jacket on and get outside regardless!

Changing Seasons in Whistler

It’s a very special time in the mountains as it signals a change, not only in the seasons, the temperature and the colours, but also in a shift of pace and focus. We perhaps slow down a touch as we start to prepare for winter days ahead. Whether that means waxing skis, increasing the morning squats, and switching from salads to soups, but one thing doesn’t change, and that’s the sense of adventure and exploration that inhabits the mountains, whatever the season.

We’ve compiled a list of 21 things to do in Whistler in the fall, but it’s by no means exhaustive; these are leaping-off points for you to carve out your own autumn itinerary while you’re here.

1. See Whistler’s Fall Colours

As the seasons change, Whistler’s lush, green valley begins to be peppered with yellows, golds, oranges and reds. It’s not only the foliage that brings a change of colour, but it’s also the snow line that creeps down the mountainside bit by bit until it’s settled as a thick, sparkling white blanket.

This is the perfect time to go for a stroll in Whistler, but make sure you pack both your warm layers and your sunglasses, as you never quite know what Mother Nature will throw your way in the mountains.

Take a read of our Insider’s Guide: Finding Fall Colours on Whistler’s Trails for some walking suggestions, and if you’re sticking close to Whistler Village, Lost Lake Park and the Fitzsimmons Trail are two places to explore. We also have a post on how seasonal scents affect your emotions, a timely read for the fall.

The free Go Whistler Tours app highlights some self-guided tour options in these areas, including nature, heritage, and arts and culture-themed routes.

Another way to see Whistler’s fall colours is from a bird’s-eye view. Ziplining over the valley as it begins its transition is stunning, but if that’s a bit too much wind in your hair, then another option for high alpine views is a 4X4 guided tour up Blackcomb Mountain.

Be aware that Whistler Blackcomb closes for annual maintenance in the fall, but this is one way you can still access that incredible terrain. From the water is another option, although we don’t recommend any mid-paddle dips as Whistler lakes are cold at this time of year.

2. Go Fall Mountain Biking on Hero Dirt

Hero dirt is what mountain bikers love about fall riding. The wetter weather gets rid of the dust, and we say hello to tacky trails that honour us with a well-earned coating of mud.

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is typically open until the start of October for lift-accessed biking fun, but Whistler also has hundreds of cross-country biking trails that weave their way throughout the Whistler Valley, so you can ride until the snow begins to fall.

Whistler’s Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA) are the ones behind most of the building and maintenance of these trails, so if you do use them, consider buying a membership to help them keep doing what they’re doing, because whether you’re a biker, hiker, trail runner, or dog walker, these trails are simply an awesome way to get into the forest and find adventure.

3. Dig Into Whistler’s Fall Dining Deals

It’s foodie heaven in Whistler come the fall, with many of the restaurants coming out with some epic dining deals. This could be your chance to try some of the fine dining options like Araxi, Bearfoot Bistro, Wild Blue, The Rimrock Cafe, or Red Door Bistro; a hidden gem like Brickworks or Alta Bistro; or a different type of cuisine at The Mexican Corner, Teppan Village, Balam, Tandoori Grill or Sushi Village.

4. Visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre

Whistler is located on the shared territories of the Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Úxumixw (Squamish) Nation and L̓il̓wat7úl (Lil’wat) Nation, and you can find out more about their living culture, stories and history at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC), located in Whistler.

Their history is interwoven with the natural world, and at the SLCC, you have the opportunity to connect with ambassadors from both Indigenous Nations during a tour of the galleries and buildings, a video presentation and a drumming performance.

It’s worth timing your visit over lunch, as their Thunderbird Cafe has some tasty Indigenous-inspired options with a modern twist, like their bannock tacos and venison chilli. And if you’re looking for a keepsake or gift, their shop has some beautifully crafted carvings, jewelry and kitchen items.

5. Hike in the Rain(forest)

Unless you’re a wicked witch of some kind, you don’t melt in the rain. Grab some waterproofs and brave the elements; the fall views and the fresh air will make it worth your while.

We collated some of our favourite fall viewpoints in The Best Fall Views in Whistler, and of course, some of them require a hike to get to them. We also have some tips for when it drips in Hiking in the Rain.

6. Try an Escape Room on a Rainy Day

It’s a little-known fact that there’s actually a pirate ship underneath Skier’s Plaza in Whistler Village; currently, there’s also an underwater lair, gold mine and a buried cabin there too. We are, of course, referring to Escape! Whistler, a great indoor activity for rainy days, date nights, or a family bonding session.

If you enjoy a good puzzle and get amped when there’s a time crunch, this is for you. Great for groups of two to six people, you’ve got 45 minutes to answer the clues and get out of any of the adventures on offer.

7. E-bike the Whistler Valley Trail

One of Whistler’s biggest gems, in my humble opinion, is the 50-kilometre Valley Trail, which weaves in and out of Whistler’s neighbourhoods, taking you through lakes, parks, beaches and stunning viewpoints.

With the rise of the e-bike, more and more people are opting to explore via pedal power with an extra boost. It means you can travel further and for longer, so it’s a great way to do a deeper dive into what Whistler has to offer.

We’d suggest taking the Valley Trail to Creekside Village, and read what’s on offer there in Insider’s Guide to Creekside. If you fancy going a bit further, then Function Junction has breweries and bakeries in which to refuel. Heading out around the back of Alta Lake will take you to Rainbow Park, where some of Whistler’s first tourism initiatives began.

8. Explore the Audain Art Museum

The Audain Art Museum is a work of art itself, created by the award-winning Patkau Architects. Its permanent collection showcases BC art, from the 18th century to the present day. Take in the work of Canadian greats like Emily Carr, E.J. Hughes and Dana Claxton, as well as an incredible collection of Northwest Coast First Nations masks.

They also have special exhibitions throughout the year, bringing in art from all over the world. It’s quite incredible to be hiking, biking or skiing in the mountains in the morning, and then taking in world-class historical and contemporary art come the afternoon.

9. Try Axe Throwing in Whistler

If you’d like to experience a little Canadiana while you’re here, we suggest visiting Forged Axe Throwing in Function Junction. With a little instruction, you’ll be hitting the bull’s eye and attempting some trick shots in no time. If you’re competitive by nature, this is a must. It’s quickly addictive, and the team there sets you up with a few games to stoke the competitive fires.

10. Get Inspired at the Whistler Writers Festival

The fall brings on images of sipping hot cocoa by the fire with a nice, thick novel in hand, and if you’re looking for some material, check out the reading list for this year’s Whistler Writers Festival. This grassroots event has been going on for 25 years, growing from a small group of literary lovers in a living room to packed ballrooms in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

The schedule includes reading events with authors and writing workshops covering a range of literary topics, so even if you’re not a writer yourself, but you love a good book, this festival is for you.

11. Explore Whistler Creekside

Creekside Village is a six-minute drive, 15-minute bike or 60-minute walk south of Whistler Village. It’s actually the location of the original village (you can see some great archival photos that explain this at the Whistler Museum), and it’s where the athletes competed in the downhill ski events during the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It’s definitely worth a trip here to check out the locally-owned shops like Get the Goods and 122 West. Make sure to grab a cinnamon bun and coffee at the award-winning, vegan bakery BReD or the funky Rockit Coffee Company. If you head to the Creekside Gondola area (not running in the fall), you can look up at the Olympic Rings, and if you’re feeling fit, you can hike up to them for a great photo.

Across the highway, there’s access to Alpha Lake Park and Nita Lake Lodge, whose restaurant and bar overlook Nita Lake.

12. Go Bear Viewing in Whistler

The early fall is a great time to spot bears as they are busy fuelling up for their winter slumber. The best and safest way to view bears in Whistler is on a bear-viewing tour. Not only do the guides know where the bears like to go, but they are passionate experts on this iconic Canadian creature and can answer all your bear-related questions.

Bear viewing tours typically run until October. Book yours before they head off for a nap! 13. Sample Whistler’s Craft Beer and Wine

The Whistler Village Beer Festival happens mid-September, with the Main Event taking over Whistler Olympic Plaza for one epic day of brew-based tastings, food trucks and lawn games. If you miss this event, you can also do a self-guided tour of Whistler’s craft beer scene using the free Go Whistler Tours app at any time of the year.

In October, join a Whistler Wine Walk to explore some of Whistler’s art galleries with a glass of wine in hand. November sees Whistler celebrating all things food and drink during Cornucopia. This festival features signature events, drink seminars, the Culinary Stage Series, and lots of parties. Read more in our Insider Guide to Whistler Cornucopia.

14. Go ATVing and Off-Roading

It’s not only Peppa Pig and small children who enjoy a muddy puddle; up the ante by gunning it through one in a side-by-side (mountain buggy / RZR / UTA) or off-road ATV. This activity is awesome in the fall, as you’re dressed head to toe in waterproof gear (provided) so that you can enjoy the elements in all their wonderfully wet glory.

15. Shop Whistler’s Fall Gear Sales

Most stores undergo seasonal change, but in Whistler, it seems more dramatic as we switch sports as well. The bikes and sneakers get packed away, and out come the skis and snowboards, and all the winter paraphernalia that comes with them. This is where you could get a great deal on summer stock, as well as last year’s winter gear.

16. Take a Dance or Yoga Class

Looking to get some movement in after work once the evenings start to get dark? Whistler has a vibrant yoga, dance and pilates scene for both locals and tourists alike to enjoy. 

Try ALGN Whistler, an adult drop-in dance and movement studio located right in the heart of Whistler Village. ALGN offers a variety of beginner-friendly dance (everything from ballet to hip-hop to salsa), yoga and mat pilates classes. YogaCara is also located within Whistler Village, offering traditional and authentic yoga classes like Vinyasa, Hatha and Yin.

17. Go Fishing

Enjoy the scenic lakes and rivers around Whistler with a day spent fishing. The salmon run typically begins mid-September, so bull trout, cutthroat trout and rainbow trout are what local fishers are after.

18. Buy Local at the Whistler Farmers’ Market

The open-air Whistler Farmers’ Market happens on Sundays during the summer in the Upper Village (May to October). In the fall, you’ll find apples, squash, root vegetables, leafy greens and, of course, pumpkins. Come hungry, as there’s always something delicious to buy and eat right there as you continue to peruse the artisan wares. It’s a great place to buy gifts or a keepsake to remind you of your travels.

19. Find Magic in the Mountains at Vallea Lumina

Vallea Lumina is a multi-media, light show set in the forests of Whistler. You walk along a one-kilometre trail while being told a story with music and light. It’s a magical experience, and as the sun sets earlier in the fall, the start times also become earlier, making it a great time to go.

20. Play Fall Golf in Whistler

Fall golf in Whistler means cooler days amidst a stunning backdrop of fall colours and mountain majesty. Whistler’s four world-class golf courses by top designers Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Bob Cupp, are typically open until mid-October.

Nicklaus North combines mountain and Green Lake views, while Fairmont has dramatic elevation and mountain scenery, and Big Sky adds the dramatic Mount Currie backdrop. Think crisp air, changing foliage, quieter fairways and snow-dusted peaks above still-green courses. That contrast is spectacular and unique to mountain courses.

21. Soak it all in at Scandinave Spa

Fall can also be a time to recoup after a busy summer, and a rest before the slopes open in the winter. One place Whistler locals go in the autumn is to the Scandinave Spa. Pair a massage with their trademark thermal journey, and you have one of the most relaxing experiences in Whistler.

It’s also the best way I know to spend a summer day in Whistler. The Whistler Valley Trail runs over 50 kilometres of car-free paved pathway through the valley, linking the Village to lake beaches, playgrounds, swimming docks and food trucks. You need a bike, a trailer, some good snacks, and a willingness to stop a lot along the way.

I spent 16 years living in Whistler before moving down the road to Horseshoe Bay and starting a family. In those years, the Valley Trail was an artery to whatever adventure I was chasing. Now it’s the adventure itself, and along for the ride are my partner and our two kids as I show them why I fell in love with the valley.

Where to Get Your Bike and Chariot

We started at Whistler Eco Tours (WET) in the Village, within the Delta Hotel Whistler Village Suites (opposite the library and El Furniture Warehouse). The friendly staff had our excited crew out the door in under 15 minutes. Being an avid biker who doesn’t get out as much as he used to, I opted for a cruiser bike because I knew we’d be sticking to the Valley Trail, and it’s a lot more comfortable for that kind of riding. 

WET is one of many rental outlets that can get families situated. Arbutus Routes, Black Diamond, and Whistler Bike Rentals all rent trailers, too. Arbutus and Whistler Bike Rentals offer chariot hitches to some of their e-bike models, but I chose to go via pedal power. Depending on what you choose, you might need to adjust the route to your fitness level.

What to Bring

The cargo hold behind the kids does the heavy lifting, so pack more than you think you need.

• Water and snacks. Roadside snacks are a lifesaver in our family.
• Swimsuits, towels, sun hats and sunscreen. Every stop on this route is a beach.
• A light layer each. Mountain weather turns fast, even in the summer.
• A bike lock, so you can leave the rig and walk down to the water.
• A full change of clothes per kid. Trust me on that one.

Route 1: Whistler Village to Lost Lake

Directions: From Whistler Eco Tours, walk your bike (you can’t ride on the Village Stroll) toward Whistler Olympic Plaza. Before the Sightlines Bridge, take a right and pass the Maury Young Arts Centre.

Cross over Blackcomb Way toward the Audain Art Museum. Go to the right, around the Audain, where you’ll find the Valley Trail and signposts toward Lost Lake Park (heading left down the trail).

You will go under Lormier Road, and when the trail forks, go right and over the bridge.

This sets you up for a washroom break at the PassivHaus, which served as the Austria House during the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Directions: From there, stay on pavement to the right, up a small hill and past the curves of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course, towards Lost Lake.

This is a perfect spot to spread out a blanket and get the kids ready for the first of many potential swimming spots. The shallow beach here is perfect for little legs, providing a warm entry to the water on a relatively safe, gentle slope.

Route 2: Whistler Village to Rainbow Park

Whistler’s original homestead sat at the northwest corner of Alta Lake, where Alex and Myrtle Philip founded Rainbow Lodge in 1915. The site is now Rainbow Park, and it’s the best half-day on this route: sandy beach, long dock, washrooms, picnic tables, and a shade structure that buys us respite from the midday sun without the impossible task of lugging a shade tent behind the bike.

Directions: Getting to Rainbow Park takes about 15 minutes from the Village. Start on the Valley Trail, along the right side of Whistler Golf Course. This takes you around the greens, then along the River of Golden Dreams until it opens onto Alta Lake.

Take this route if your family are early risers. There is no better feeling than having the whole trail to yourself, moving from the big trees along the golf course to the birds sounding off along the river. Of all the major parks, Rainbow loses the sun earliest, so aim for morning to mid-afternoon.

If you’re continuing on from Lost Lake, go back to the main entrance where the PassivHaus is, cross the Fitzsimmons Creek and follow the Valley Trail along Lorimer Road (up and down a hill), following the signs to Rainbow Park.

Route 3: Exploring all of Alta Lake

Directions: For a full-day adventure around Alta Lake, turn left at the Whistler Golf Course Clubhouse, following along Highway 99 heading south.

When you get to the end of the Whistler Golf Course, follow the signs through the Alta Vista neighbourhood, and you’ll make it to Lakeside Park. Note that you’re going downhill quite a bit, so this isn’t our preferred return route.

Lakeside Park

Lakeside Park has a big grassy area, beach, a play area, washrooms and a concession selling ice cream. Backroads Whistler runs a watersports centre right on the beach where you can rent canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats. It’s first-come, first-served unless you book ahead. FYI, the lake is at its calmest in the morning.

Wayside Park

Continuing just a few hundred meters more brings you to Wayside Park. Wayside offers a shady, relaxed vibe. It’s also the last place on Alta Lake to see the sun before it dips behind Sproatt Mountain in the evening.

There isn’t much space to spread out, nor is there much flat space. However, it’s often not as busy as other parks, so snagging some good green space or a picnic table might be easier than at other spots.

Alta Lake Park

Directions: After Wayside, turn right at the fork and look out for Alta Lake Park on your right. It’s a peaceful area with a nice, large swimming dock that is popular for locals. It’s best to park the bikes here and walk past the oversized Adirondack chairs for one of the family’s favourite snack spots. 

Rainbow Park

Directions: Keep biking along in the same direction, and you’ll come to a fork. Go right. You cross the train tracks and up a small hill to Alta Lake Road, the only part of the Valley Trail we share with cars on this journey. It’s only a few hundred metres past a row of houses before a quick descent down to Rainbow Park.

Extension: At the fork after Wayside Park, if you go left, you head southward to Creekside, where you can continue past Nita Lake toward Alpha Lake Park, another kid’s favourite with a natural wood playground adjacent to an old-growth grove of spruce trees. Factor in at least an hour round-trip if you choose to take this route.

The Route Back

From Rainbow Park, it’s a 15 to 20-minute ride back to Whistler Village. If the lake is behind you, the Valley Trail will be on the right. Look out for some birdwatching lookout spots along the way.

When the Valley Trail hits the bottom of Lorimer Road (you’ll pass a church), turn right at the fork. Follow the signs to Whistler Village, which takes you alongside the Whistler Golf Course (there is one punchy hill this way, but it’s a lot flatter than going the other way around).

Two Important Considerations When Biking the Valley Whistler Trail

1. Be bear aware. Whistler is bear country, and our furry forest friends use the Valley Trail to get around, too. Make noise in blind corners. If you see one, stop, stay calm, and back away. Most of the time, they trundle off. Read more in the Be Bear Aware blog.
2. Bike Etiquette: Whistler attracts visitors from all over the world, where road rules may be different. Here we ride on the right side of the path and pass on the left, making sure not to cross double lines. If you need to pass, please let out a friendly warning in advance so as not to startle anyone. The Valley Trail does get busy, so please be courteous of your speed, especially with children in the back.

The journey beats the destination. If your toddlers are anything like ours, the mood can change in an instant. The dreaded meltdown is more likely than unlikely for most kids out of their comfort zone, unless you’re raising a unicorn. We plan for it, knowing that throwing a rock into the creek may well be the highlight of their day.

Whistler prides itself on its open, welcoming embrace of diversity: orienting its continued development to ensure that the town and trails are not just geared towards the able-bodied, but, rather, all bodies.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is the first to declare that “Accessibility is an evolving concept that will always have room for improvement. It is a journey and not a destination.” However, it is a journey that the RMOW has actively embarked on, as have Whistler Off Road Cycling Association (WORCA) and Whistler Blackcomb, spearheading the implementation of accessible and/or adaptive infrastructure developments and modifications.

Adopting Accessibility Frameworks

Starting in the 2000s, and especially after the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, “Whistler began applying formal accessibility frameworks,” according to the RMOW. “The municipality now uses Universal Design principles (design usable by all people without adaptation).”

Accessibility is integrated into policies in the Resort Municipality’s Official Community Plan (OCP), and a proactive Whistler Accessibility Action Plan (2022+) guides decision-making. Whistler is modelling some of the most innovative strategies for enlarging the continued scope of access to this mountainous landscape.

The Pre-Planning Preparation

“The best thing that we can do,” Whistler Blackcomb relays, in their attempts to foster a barrier-free experience to guests who have accessible needs, “is provide as much pre-arrival information as possible so people can make informed decisions and plans.”

The Mountains have an ‘Accessibility in Whistler’ webpage, a mountain bike orientation guide, videos and specific signage (both on the mountain, in their related retail outlets and throughout their website). All of these combined resources allow people to plan ahead and ease their arrival and overall experience.

Access Whistler Map

Not all visitors to Whistler wish to go up the mountain to ride, wander the trails or go sightseeing. Many choose to stay in the Village and Valley. And, here too, there are resources and options for exploration. The RMOW has produced an Access Whistler Map which shows the various elements of accessible infrastructure throughout the Village. 

For accessible mountain biking trails (aMTB) throughout the Valley, both WORCA and the RMOW steer people toward online platforms such as Trailforks, where people are guided to select ‘Adaptive MTB’ as the filter for ‘Bike Type’. The list of trails included continues to expand.

Whistler’s Accessible Trails

From gentle sidewalk-cruising to wheelchair-wide and grade-appropriate wooded trails, to daredevil descents: Whistler offers a network of trails to meet a diversity of needs and dreams.

The Whistler Valley Trail

“The Valley Trails are amazing,” exclaims athlete and community accessibility advocate Olivia Rey. A wheelchair user, Rey continues, “You can basically go from like Emerald all the way to Function on the Valley Trail.”

The Whistler Valley Trail was designed as a multi‑use, low‑grade, paved greenway, not a rugged trail, linking all the neighbourhoods from one end of Whistler to the other:

“The RMOW recognizes that the Valley Trail is not uniformly barrier‑free; some segments have steeper grades (e.g., up to 12%) or uneven access points. As a result, the Accessibility Action Plan seeks to have LIDAR data added to the GIS to better inform community members and visitors of what sort of grades they should expect when travelling certain sections of the Valley Trail.”

The Valley Trail system exemplifies multi-modal, shared usage: from strollers to bikes, four-wheelers to trikes, walkers to wagons, the trail winds past a myriad of local sights, from woods to waterways.

The Valley Trail can be accessed at various points throughout Whistler, with maps, information signs and historical interpretative panels dotted along the way. Sporadically painted along the path are friendly invitations and reminders to ‘Share the Trail.’

Fitzsimmons Accessible Nature Trail

Located north of Lorimer Road between Fitzsimmons Creek and Blackcomb Way, the trail is considered a Universal Access Trail. The RMOW relays that:

“The construction of this trail included re-surfacing and compacting, removal of vegetation to improve sight lines and safety, and installation of interpretive signs. Though this trail was purposely designed for universal mobility, we recognized that there is an opportunity for people with vision impairments to experience the trail with some modifications, as well as improvements for the interpretive signage for people with vision loss.

We also ensured that the trail met DeafSpace requirements to allow individuals who use sign language to converse without needing to break visual contact while moving through the wide spaces with clear sightlines and a smooth barrier-free circulation.”

The Trail offers an excellent opportunity to experience some of the biotic diversity of the local ecosystem, offering the chance to glimpse a multitude of the local flora and fauna, from birds to beaver-bitten trees.

Whistler Blackcomb’s Mountain Biking Trails

“Our mandate is to ensure that the trails and the experiences that we have are accessible to as many people as possible,” states Omer Dagan, Whistler Blackcomb spokesperson and Senior Analyst. “Our goal is to ensure that the mountains are open to everyone, that anyone, regardless of their ability, age, or background, can come to Whistler Blackcomb and have a great experience.”

Directing us towards the MTB trail map, Dagan notes that about 50% of the bike park trails have received an adaptive rating. There are adaptive green trails, blue trails and yes, even multiple black diamonds. These are all represented by icons on the Mountains’ Trails Map. Whistler Blackcomb employs the Kootenay Adaptive Mountain Bike Trail Rating System, a leader in the field of accessibility, to assess and rank its trails.

Whistler Blackcomb has offerings that cater to the beginner right up to elite, world-class, competitive adaptive athletes who use the Mountains’ trails as a training ground.

“The absence of a sign [on the map] simply means that we have not rated that trail. It doesn’t mean that it’s not accessible.”

Whistler Blackcomb is at the forefront of accessible initiatives, with an internal accessibility working group with representatives from all departments. The Mountains has also “created an adaptive mountain bike lift loading video so that folks who are here in the resort can understand how we’re going to load their adaptive mountain bike for them on the gondola or the chairlift.” Whistler Blackcomb has predefined training for all of its lift operators.

“Our level of understanding of what is a best practice has really shifted. We recognize that we are not perfect and we have a lot of work to do and a long way to go.”

That being said, the Roundhouse, however, is the first facility at any resort in North America to be certified accessible by the Rick Hansen Foundation. This designation and recognition are an important stepping stone on the trail ahead.

Valley-based, Off-road Mountain Biking Trails: Flashback, FarOut, Farside

WORCA’s visionary mandate is to “deliver a world-class trail experience that meets diverse community needs.” Lead trail builder Dan Raymond excitedly exclaims: “It’s been one of the most fun parts of my job to imagine what the [trail] network could be, and this adaptive lens is just like one other way to look at what’s available [and] actually meet more needs or the needs of more people.”

WORCA’s current strategic plan includes focusing on new trail development that addresses “gaps in the existing trail network (e.g. adaptive trails, climbing trails) with the goal of building cohesive loops.”  And an 11-kilometre cohesive loop, meeting adaptive accessible standards, is exactly what WORCA, in conjunction with the RMOW, is in the process of completing in the Cheakamus Trail network.

Construction began in 2023 on WORCA’s first aMTB trail, the Flashback 1 segment. Construction has continued. WORCA Executive Director, Trevor Ferrao, explains, “This year… will result in a complete 11-kilometre aMTB route using Farside, Far Out and Flashback trails.” The excitement is palpable, as Raymond, Ferrao and the WORCA crew work towards the end of this multi-phased project. The passion is clear, as is WORCA’s dedication to the continued building of more accessible trails.

Raymond expresses how he gets “really excited about growing the mandate” and is quick to point out that “just because the trail is adaptive blue-rated doesn’t mean that blue able-bodied bikers won’t appreciate and want to use that trail as well.”

Next Steps for Accessibility in Whistler

The RMOW “recognizes that much of the early efforts to improve accessibility related to mobility disabilities and that continued efforts are needed for individuals with vision loss, those who are Deaf and hard of hearing, as well as for individuals with cognitive disabilities.” The Municipality is currently looking at some technology interventions that may assist individuals with disabilities through their smartphones.

From Crankworx to the Invictus Games, from Whistler Adaptive Sports programs to roundtables, advocacy committees and policy changes, Whistler continues to model integrating effective accessibility mechanisms not as an afterthought, but as paramount, recognizing, all the while, that collectively we still have much to learn, undo and re-do. Upgrading and addressing more accessible public transportation to/from and within Whistler necessarily needs to be prioritized, along with access to accessible accommodation (both for residents and visitors alike).

The RMOW adds, “We will continue to evaluate our trail system and make improvements to allow everyone to participate and enjoy the beautiful natural environments of Whistler.”

Olivia Rey perhaps best sums up an integral takeaway, with her reminder that…

“Being in a wheelchair doesn’t define who I am as a person. It’s simply the way that allows me to move through the world, similar to how someone rides their bike, skateboard, or car.”

A broadly accessible Whistler is a vision we can all participate in realizing.

The Kees and Claire Hut is more than just a shelter; it’s a haven. A heated, boot room-equipped, coffee-plunger-carrying haven. For backcountry hikers (and skiers), it’s a little slice of luxury in the alpine. And as someone who has lived at the base of Whistler for over seven years, this is the one overnight hike I keep coming back to. I’ve done it five times, and a couple of summers ago, I took my parents with me. 

Why Russet Lake Keeps Calling Me Back 

There are several overnight hikes around Whistler that are world-famous, but Russet Lake often flies under the radar. That’s part of its charm. 

The route I recommend skips the big ascent and heads straight into the alpine with a lift-assisted start via Whistler Blackcomb’s gondolas (you’ll need a lift ticket). This means you start with big mountain views from the very first step. As you get off the Peak Chair, you’ll be greeted with peaks in every direction.

Take a quick side trip across the Cloudraker Skybridge for panoramic views stretching all the way down the valley. Timed right, the meadows on the way to the hut will be teeming with wildflowers, as you look over the unbelievably blue Cheakamus Lake and out onto glaciated peaks as far as you can see.  

Add to that a night in the Kees and Claire Hut, and this might be the best bang-for-your-buck hike in the Sea to Sky. 

The Route: My Recommended Way In and Out to the Kees and Claire Hut 

There are a few ways to get to Russet Lake, but this is the route I swear by: 

• Start: Take the Blackcomb Gondola up from the Upper Village, ride the PEAK 2 PEAK across to Whistler, then hop on the Peak Chair to reach the summit. It’s worth it for the views from the top of the mountain! Buy your tickets here. 

• Route Choice: From there, you can choose Matthews Traverse to Half Note, or the longer High Note Trail, depending on whether you want the direct or more scenic route.  

• Link up with the Musical Bumps Trail, and make your way over Flute and Oboe. 

• Hike up Cowboy Ridge (the steepest bit – you’ve been warned), and you’ll arrive at Russet Lake and the Kees and Claire Hut. 

• Exit: Hike out via Singing Pass Trail, which winds gently downhill through the forest all the way back into Whistler Village. You finish right at the base of the mountain, ready for a burger and a beer. 

Total Route Length: 9.5 kilometres in and 14 kilometres out.

Total hiking time: 3 to 5 hours in and 4 to 6 out, depending on pace (and how many photo stops you take).

Taking My Parents 

Two of the best things about this hike are how light your pack can be, thanks to not needing heavy camping gear, and how much elevation gain you skip by riding Whistler Blackcomb’s gondolas straight to the alpine. 

This made it the perfect overnight adventure to show my parents the incredible backyard I’m lucky enough to call home: soaking in the views, spotting alpine wildlife, and spending quality time together in the mountains. 

While gondola access and lighter packs make this hike more accessible, it is still no stroll in the park. Climbing up and down mountains is no small feat, but one well worth pushing yourself to do!  

The Kees and Claire Memorial Hut 

The hut is the first in a proposed network of three huts being built for the challenging multi-day Spearhead Traverse. Luckily for us, the Kees and Claire Hut is easy for beginners to access as an overnight trip.

Built in memory of some local legends gone too soon, it sits on the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh-ulh Temíx̱w, Lil’wat, and St̓át̓imc Tmicw First Nation. Take a moment to read their stories here.  

The hut features an incredibly well-stocked kitchen upstairs, with epic views of the surrounding peaks, and a 38-bed dorm divided into six sleeping areas downstairs.  

If you’re lucky with the weather, you’ll be soaking in pink alpenglow and stunning sunsets from the huge windows in the hut. 

What I Packed (and What I Left at Home) 

Staying at the hut means you can ditch a lot of the usual overnight gear. Here’s what I actually brought: 

• Sleeping bag + pillow 

• Headlamp 

• Food for dinner, breakfast, and snacks 

• Lightweight clothes, warm layers + rain gear 

• Earplugs (bunk beds are communal!) 

• A small garbage bag – there’s no trash collection 

• Map + inReach (satellite communication device)

What I didn’t need to bring: sleeping pad, stove, cookware, plates, hut shoes or utensils. The hut kitchen is incredibly well-stocked. They even have French presses and a teapot! Just maybe avoid smelly things like fish or anything that burns a lot of gas – it’s flown in and costs a fortune!

Hot Tips for Your Trip to the Kees and Claire Hut

• Book early. The hut fills up fast in summer, especially on weekends. Click here to make a reservation.

• The Singing Pass Trail: the last few kilometres feel long at the end. Bring gummy bears. 

• Bring delicious food – make the most of having a full kitchen and a light pack – leave those dehydrated meals for other hikes!  

• Parking: If you’ve booked the hut, you can park overnight in Lot 4 – just follow the signs or leave a note in your window with your reservation number. 

Hut Etiquette: A Few Key Things 

The Kees and Claire Hut is still a backcountry hut – not a hotel – so it runs on mutual respect. A few reminders: 

1. Pack it in, pack it out: There are no garbage facilities. Don’t leave anything behind – even apple cores or uneaten food.

2. Clean up properly: Wipe down the counters, sweep, refill water jugs – leave it better than you found it. 

3. Quiet hours matter: People are tired, and sound really carries in a hut. Read one of the books from the library shelf or bring headphones if you’re a night owl. 

Leave No Trace 

It might look rugged up there, but alpine plants are delicate and slow-growing. Stick to the trails, don’t shortcut across meadows, and keep your impact light. 

This hike is beautiful because people have taken care of it – let’s keep it that way. 

Final Thoughts 

This trip has everything I love about Whistler: big views, easy access to adventure, and a chance to disconnect.  

If you’re looking for an overnight hike that’s beginner-friendly but still breathtaking, that offers comfort without losing the spirit of backcountry adventure – this is the one. 

Do your research, come prepared, and bring someone you love. You won’t regret it.

However, we decided to ask someone who has travelled the trails for more than the thrill of guiding two wheels down some of the most epic biking terrain in the world. You’re more likely to find this person dangling off a rocky outcrop or crouched in the shrubbery, all to get the perfect shot.

Justa was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. When she was 11, she watched an ice hockey game and was hooked on the fast-paced action. From then on, she dreamt of coming to North America to see a live NHL game, and in 1998, she made that a reality and moved to British Columbia.

The call of the mountains drew her to Whistler, where she discovered mountain biking. 20 years on, she no longer chases a puck across the ice but hunts down the perfect lighting for a bike-based beauty shot.

She might still struggle to change a bike tire, but what she lacks in mechanical skills is made up for by her passion behind the lens. Today, she is the owner of Justa Jeskova Photography, and you’ll find her incredible shots in this blog.

Mountain Biking in Whistler

Summer in Whistler is something special. You can fill your days with the outdoor adventure options that lie before you, but you’d still need months to accomplish them all. But out of all the choices, there’s one in particular that stands out above them all. For me, and many others, that is mountain biking.

One thing I truly love about mountain biking is how social it can be. From random trailside chats to chairlift conversations or get-togethers at the weekly WORCA Toonie Rides, I’ve met lots of interesting locals and visitors through mountain biking, and one common question seems to inevitably pop up.

What’s your favourite trail?

As simple as the question may seem, that’s actually tough to answer. With hundreds of trails to choose from, there’s really not one simple answer. Instead, I have a list of go-to trails that could all be my favourite depending on the current weather, how much time I have, or even who I’ll be riding with.

The List: Whistler’s Best Mountain Bike Trails

For early-season rides when the snow line is still low, or I’m short on time, I usually go for a quick loop around Cheakamus for some flow time.

1. Cheakamus

High Side–HiHi–After Hours–AMPM are easily accessed from Cheakamus, offering a perfect after-work option. After a short pedal up a dirt road, the fun starts immediately with twisting, rolling singletrack and a few small doubles for those who enjoy getting their tires off the ground.

It all ends with the action-packed AMPM, which features a few rock rolls before spitting you out within pedalling distance of Function Junction.

When the snow starts to recede higher and more options open up, it becomes more difficult to choose a favourite. There are, however, a few trails that I tend to ride more than others.

2. LESS / Lower Elevation Shorter Squirrels

LESS – When I’m craving a longer day in the forest, this is my first choice. Lower Elevation Shorter Squirrels is halfway up to the famous Lord of the Squirrels trail and descends through beautiful, old-growth forest. I find myself riding here when the weather is moody.

The green hues of the trees and ferns burst forth with an unreal vibrance in the fog. There’s no place I’d rather be riding my bike in Whistler on days like these. It also doesn’t hurt that the descent back to the valley is over 800 metres of vertical on some of the West Side’s best trails.

3. Howler

HOWLER. Right in my backyard and perfect in most weather. One of the better trails to ride when Whistler’s been seeing its fair share of liquid sunshine. The dirt here sheds water well and stays grippy even when other trails tend to be saturated.

This trail’s got a bit of everything. Lots of tech, a couple of small drops, fast flow and some of Whistler Valley’s best late-evening views. Pure magic!

4. Micro Climate

Micro Climate. Some say Blackcomb Mountain is home to the best dirt in the valley. I would agree with them. It has an amazing network of trails, many of which have been featured in the Enduro World Series. Even if world-class enduro racing isn’t your cup of tea, everyone will have their own favourite lap here.

My Blackcomb classic is Micro Climate. The roots, rock rolls and twisting turns over its 375-metre vertical drop keep me on my toes every time. I love it just as much today as the first time I rode it back when it first opened in 2014.

5. Top of the World

Now we get to my personal favourite time of year. Alpine season! When the snow has almost fully disappeared, we can finally access our highest trails. Full-day adventures, mountain-top swims, high mountain sunsets and big descents rule the day.

Top Of The World. This purpose-built mountain bike, alpine trail offers breathtaking views while you enjoy advanced singletrack at full speed. It is accessed through the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and requires an additional ticket to access it.

It’s well worth the upgrade as this gem has stunning views of the surrounding Coast Mountains, including the iconic Black Tusk. Once you leave the alpine, you have more than a handful of world-class trails to choose from to get you all the way to the bottom.

6. Lord of the Squirrels

Lord of the Squirrels – Whistler’s second purpose-built, mountain bike, alpine trail is actually only part of the attraction on Sproatt Mountain. There are now eight trails in total that make up the network, excluding the climb up Into The Mystic. The beauty of it all is that they’re all above the treeline with some of the most stunning views you’ll find in Whistler.

Other than the creative trail routing and good times up there, you may just happen to find your new favourite lunch spot or swimming hole. If you’ve got the energy and experience, you can tick off every trail in one massive 46-kilometre loop with over 1,800 metres of vertical. There are not many better ways to spend a day in Whistler than this.

7. Whistler Mountain Bike Park

Now I’d be remiss if I did not mention the world-famous Whistler Bike Park. Again, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but there’s one set of trails that I think goes under the radar quite often. B-Line, Funshine Rolly Drops, Smoke and Mirrors, Blueseum, Wednesday Night Delight, Afternoon Delight, Lower Whistler DH to Heart Of Darkness.

Yes, that’s a lot of different trails, but it’s one of the best link-ups in the park, encompassing a bit of everything. Berms, drops, jumps, tech, rock rolls, speed and even a bit of jank. Well worth venturing away from A-Line or Dirt Merchant for a lap or two.

8. Epic Ride: Rainbow’s End

The pinnacle of my summer and probably my favourite time to ride is August. By then, the snow has finally melted out of the high alpine, and the mosquitoes are starting to disappear. It’s the perfect window to head up high. There are plenty of trails you can ride up and down in a day, but I’ve always been drawn to going a bit deeper, staying out for sunsets, slowing things down and disconnecting from the busy season.

One of those missions that stands out is Rainbow’s End trail, a hike-a-bike all the way up, but absolutely worth it. It’s not easy, but that’s kind of the point. Somewhere along the climb, the noise quiets down. By the time we reach the top, I feel completely present again. The views are unreal, and once you’re up there, it feels like a completely different world. These days, recharge everything – my creativity, my energy, and my love for both riding and photography.

Hike up the Ski Jumps

Explore trails of different difficulty levels and bike or hike to breathtaking viewpoints. Challenge yourself with the signature Ski Jump Scramble and climb to the top of the Olympic ski jumps. Wander through wide multi-use trails and discover the summer version of the world-renowned cross-country ski trails.

When you visit, learn about the Games by reading the interpretive signage, and take a photo as you visit the Olympic cross-country stadium, the biathlon range, and, of course, the Olympic Rings. More than one-third of all the Vancouver 2010 Winter and Paralympic Olympic Medals were awarded at Whistler Olympic Park.

The Park also features impressive First Nations art, created in the lead-up to the 2010 Games. Today, the art legacy consists of five official Olympic pieces and two others added afterward, making a total of seven carvings and tapestries. Book a Round of Summer Biathlon

Feel like an Olympian with an introduction to the winter sport of biathlon—in the summer! Learn to take aim and shoot a 22-calibre rifle at the Olympic shooting range. This is a super fun activity for groups of all sizes, with no previous experience necessary. Advanced booking is recommended.

The Squamish Disc Golf Club and the Whistler Disc Golf Club teamed up to build a NEW, exciting and FREE 9-hole disc golf course at Whistler Olympic Park! Picnics with a View

Whether you hike to the Top of the World, take a break on the Adirondack chairs, or relax on the deck of the Day Lodge, the views surrounding you will elevate your picnic to another level. Be sure to stop by the Day Lodge store to refuel with snacks and drinks (including ice cream!). Wander through the boutique for a great selection of outdoor apparel and souvenirs.

NEW! Interpretive Walk

Discover the story of Whistler Olympic Park on this scenic self-guided walk through the Olympic venue. Explore First Nations art displays at the Day Lodge before following interpretive signage through the cross-country and biathlon stadiums, with breathtaking mountain views and glacier-capped vistas along the way. 

Head back to the Day Lodge for a yummy lunch on the patio and a little shopping at the boutique.
