General Information

Can I go fishing in Whistler year-round?

Yes. Guided fishing tours run year-round in Whistler. In winter you can try ice fishing on a frozen lake, and in the warmer months tours head to local rivers, streams and lakes.

What fish can I catch near Whistler?

Depending on the season, you may catch rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, bull trout, brook trout, Dolly Varden and salmon.

What is included on a guided fishing tour?

Guided fishing tours generally include a guide, fishing gear such as rods, tackle, flies and lures, and pickup and drop-off from your Whistler accommodation. On wading trips, waders and boots are usually provided too. A BC fishing licence is not included, and lunch is generally not included. Check the details of your chosen tour when booking.

Do I need fishing experience?

No. Whistler fishing tours are suitable for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Guides tailor the trip to your skill level and walk you through everything from casting to reeling in your catch.

Can kids go fishing?

Many fishing tours welcome youth anglers, though age requirements vary by tour and younger participants usually need to be accompanied by an adult. Check the age requirements of your chosen tour when booking.

Can I keep the fish I catch?

Some Whistler fishing tours operate on a strict catch-and-release basis. Check the policy of your chosen tour before you go.

Where will I be fishing?

It depends on the tour and time of year. Guides choose the water that gives you the best chance of a catch, so you may fish a small stream, river or lake, a frozen lake in winter, or a remote alpine lake.

Fishing Licences

Do I need a fishing licence?

Yes. Anyone 16 years of age and older needs a valid BC Non-Tidal Basic (freshwater) Fishing Licence for each day they fish, even on catch-and-release trips. Anglers under 16 do not need a licence. Licences are not included in the price of a guided tour.

How do I buy a BC fishing licence?

Licences are purchased online. First-time buyers need to register as a new angler before they can purchase a licence. One-day, eight-day and annual licences are available, with different rates for BC residents and non-residents. We recommend buying your licence the day before your trip.

Save your licence to your phone or print a copy, as you must have it on you at all times while fishing. Additional stamps are required to fish for some salmon species.

What to Bring

What should I bring on a fishing tour?

Bring your BC fishing licence, clothing suitable for the weather, and your own water and snacks. Some tours ask for your height, weight and shoe size when booking so they can provide waders and boots that fit. Let your tour operator know about any health concerns or mobility limitations in advance.
