Bear Viewing Information & FAQ's

General Information

What can I expect on a bear viewing tour?

Expect a guided safari-style experience travelling by 4x4 into Whistler’s backcountry. Guides visit known feeding areas, daybeds, and travel corridors while sharing insight into black bear behaviour, habitat, and seasonal patterns. Sightings vary, but the experience is always focused on respectful wildlife observation.

Are we guaranteed to see bears?

No. While guides actively track bears throughout the season, sightings cannot be guaranteed. Bear activity depends on factors such as weather, food supply, other bears, and human presence.

When does bear viewing run in Whistler?

Bear viewing tours typically operate from April/May through September/October, depending on snowmelt, weather, and bear activity levels.

Safety & Requirements

Is bear viewing safe?

Yes. Tours are led by experienced guides who follow established wildlife viewing protocols. Bears are observed from a safe distance, primarily from within the vehicle, to minimize disturbance and ensure guest safety.

Can children join the tour?

Whistler Photo Safaris: All ages are welcome. Booster seats are available. Infant car seats must be supplied and installed by the guest.
Whistler Blackcomb: Tours are recommended for ages 10 and up. For families with younger children, a private tour or vehicle is recommended.

Practical Information

What should I bring?

  • Camera or phone (zoom lenses are helpful)
  • Weather-appropriate layers
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Water and light snacks
  • Sun protection

What if the weather is bad?

All tours are subject to weather conditions. Bear activity, and therefore sightings, can be affected by weather, food availability, other bears, and human activity. Tours may proceed in light rain but can be adjusted or cancelled in unsafe conditions.

Booking & Logistics

Is pick-up and drop-off included?

Whistler Photo Safaris: Yes. Guides will pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation or another convenient location in Whistler.
Whistler Blackcomb: Tours meet at the Bear Viewing Flag next to the Adventure Zone Kiosk at the base of the Blackcomb Gondola in the Upper Village.

How big are the groups?

Group sizes vary by operator and tour type. Smaller groups are typical to enhance viewing quality and reduce environmental impact.

Are private tours available?

Private or exclusive vehicles may be available and are recommended for families with young children or guests seeking a customized experience. Availability varies, confirm at booking.
