This year’s Whistler Summer Concert Series, presented by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, returns with a stacked global lineup, where fresh finds meet familiar favourites over 13 unforgettable nights at Whistler Olympic Plaza this July and August. The music action starts on Canada Day, July 1, with cherished Canadian icon Steven Page, co-founder, vocalist and songwriter with former band Barenaked Ladies.

Whistler Summer Concert Series 2026 – Full Lineup

This summer’s lineup includes the Steven Page Trio with String Quartet, Ozomatli, The Trews, Dirtwire, The Washboard Union, SkiiTour, Amistat, Kim Churchill, Pete Murray, Goldie Boutilier, Galactic feat. Jelly Joseph, Trooper, Drag in the Mountains, and The Hip Abduction. Read on for who’s playing when and for links to their music. 

Happening on Thursday and Friday evenings throughout July and August, with a break during Crankworx, each evening’s programming starts at 6:30 PM with a welcome from Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre Ambassadors before the opening act starts. The headlining act takes to the stage at 7:30 PM, wrapping up around 9 PM. We suggest getting there early to scope out a good spot, organize your nibbles and simply relax and take it all in!

Wednesday, July 1 – Steven Page Trio and String Quartet with opening DJ Foxy Moron

Experience Whistler’s Canada Day with Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Steven Page, who has established himself as one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in entertainment.  As co-founder, vocalist and songwriter with former band Barenaked Ladies, Steven sang and wrote classics like “Brian Wilson” and “If I Had a Million Dollars.” As a solo artist, he has continued his musical journey performing and writing music, working in film, theatre and television and is an award-winning public speaker on the topic of mental health.

His stellar band, The Steven Page Trio, includes Craig Northey of Vancouver legends Odds on guitar, the multi-talented Kevin Fox on cello, resulting in three-part harmonies to die for. For this special show, the Trio will be accompanied by a string quartet composed of some of Canada’s finest classical musicians. Together, they will perform songs from Steven Page’s vast catalogue of solo material, along with lots of Barenaked Ladies hits as only Steven can sing them.

Thursday, July 2 – Ozomatli with opening DJ Vinyl Ritchie

Ozomatli is a genre-blending Latin, hip-hop, funk, and global music band born in Los Angeles and shaped by the city’s cultural pulse. Led by six founding members—Asdru Sierra, Raul Pacheco, Ulises Bella, Wil-Dog Abers, Jiro Yamaguchi, and Justin Poree—Ozomatli delivers a trusted live experience rooted in connection, rhythm, and community.

More than 30 years in, the band continues to evolve, creating new music while bringing diverse audiences together in celebration of unity, resilience, and joy.

Friday, July 3 – The Trews with opening DJ Whitness

The achievements of rock ‘n’ roll heavyweights, The Trews, are many and mighty, highlighted by multiple radio hits, drawn from seven critically acclaimed studio albums plus several EPs, a pair of live records, and a retrospective. Comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Colin MacDonald, lead guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, drummer Theodore McKibbon, and keyboardist Jeff Heisholt, The Trews have been one of Canada’s most successful rock bands of the past decade, earning 20 Top 10 Rock radio singles (including three #1’s) and multiple Gold & Platinum certified albums.

The band has also received multiple East Coast Music Awards, a CIMA Road Gold Award, an Independent Music Award (US) in 2009 for Best Rock / Metal Song, and numerous JUNO Award nominations. The Trews have played thousands of shows worldwide, on their own as well as supporting the Rolling Stones, KISS, Robert Plant, Guns ‘n Roses, Aerosmith, Weezer, Mumford & Sons, Bruce Springsteen, Switchfoot and more. Drawing on rock, pop, punk, and metal, the band took over Canadian Radio with “Not Ready to Go.” Twenty years and a Canadian Platinum certification later, the songs still pack their original punch.

Thursday, July 9 – Dirtwire with special guest Mark Woodyard

Dirtwire stands poised between ancient Mother Earth and modern technology, a blend of ethnomusicology and the psychedelic trance state, gut-bucket delta blues and what the band variously dubs “back-porch space cowboy blues, swamptronica, and electro-twang.” It’s a sound informed by Dirtwire’s travels and performances around the globe, where East meets West, and North joins South. The band spreads its message by building bridges across musical cultures in its own unique way.

Dirtwire plays an array of instruments, both ancient and modern, including West African kamale ngonis, jaw harps, space fiddles, whamola basses, Rickenbacher electric 12-string guitars, bowed banjos and mouth harps from around the globe, all interwoven into modern laptop beat creation. Ranging from down-home boot-stomping get-downs to bass and blues electronic mashups, to ethereal cinematic beat-driven soundscapes, woven into each show is the exploration of where live instruments meet computer production, and where tradition meets experimentation.

Friday, July 10 – The Washboard Union with opening DJ Stache

The Washboard Union are JUNO Award winners and 9-time Canadian Country Music Award winners with a platinum record and four gold records to their name. Their signature 3-part harmonies, anthemic hit songs, and one-of-a-kind dynamic live shows have made them one of the most sought-after live bands in country music. They have toured with Nashville superstars Old Dominion, Diamond Rio, Lonestar and Dwight Yoakam and have shared festival stages with Morgan Wallen, Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Zac Brown Band, Hardy and more.

The band have just signed a new record deal in North America with Arts and Crafts Country. In addition, they have signed to ABC Music in Australia/New Zealand and recently completed their first Australian tour. These shows add to their many international appearances, which include Spain, France, Ireland and multiple shows across the United States. Thursday, July 16 – SkiiTour with special guest Fort Knox Five

Hailing from the snow-covered peaks of Whistler, Canada, SkiiTour is known for their upbeat “feel-good house music that keeps the vibe groovy” (DJ Mag) while channelling a retro ski aesthetic. Their annual après-ski parties at Shambhala Music Festival, featuring snow cones & snow machines, are the things of legend, where the energy is so high it feels like the mountains themselves are dancing.

They have released successful singles on labels like Hou5trap, DND Recordings, Box Of Cats and have made Mixmag & DJ Mag’s “Track of the Month” multiple times while garnering recent support from industry heavyweights like Fedde Le Grand, Benny Benassi, Don Diablo, and Claptone, just to name a few. Friday, July 17 – Amistat with opening DJ SOUL CLUB

Following a landmark 2025, selling over 30,000 tickets across Europe, the UK, and North America, the twin brothers with Czech and Australian roots return in 2026 with a fresh collection of songs showcasing their evolution and artistry. This fall, Amistat embark on a major European tour, giving fans the first chance to hear their new music live.

Alongside the headline tour at the end of the year, the duo will also play a run of festivals across Europe, as well as a series of shows in Canada this summer. Known for their unmistakable harmonies and unspoken musical bond, the duo continues to captivate audiences around the world. With every note, they turn the ordinary into something unforgettable. Their musical journey is a live experience you won’t want to miss.

Thursday, August 13 – An Evening with Pete Murray and Kim Churchill

Kim Churchill grew up in a small town on the east coast of Australia called Merimbula, mainly known for surfing, oysters and whale watching. He set off in a van straight after high school to chase his dreams and surf his way across the country. In the first year, he won the Byron Bluesfest Busking comp and became Folk Artist of the Year at the National Folk Festival. This led to adventures in Japan, North America and Europe. He signed major record deals with Warner, Atlantic Records (UK) and Universal (Europe). His song “Window to the Sky” became the most played song on Triple J, went on to be 42nd in the Hottest 100, and is Platinum in Australia, Gold in Canada and Germany and has over 50 million streams.

In 2024, Kim returned with his eighth studio album, “It’s Lovely To Have You Here,” highly praised by the industry and fans alike. Hitting home runs with singles “Hobbies,” “Reflecting (Feat. Emily Brimlow),” and “The Wayside.” Kim’s sound will be heard throughout the European and Canadian festival seasons as well, with extensive tours booked across both continents.

One of Australia’s most enduring and beloved singer-songwriters, Pete Murray has built a career spanning decades with a string of multi-platinum-selling albums and hit singles. He has sold over 1.2 million albums, with three of his albums reaching the top of the ARIA charts. His career has earned him 17 ARIA Award nominations. Murray’s breakthrough came with his second album, “Feeler”, in 2003, which cemented his status as a key figure in Australian music.

This success was followed by a series of hits, including “Better Days,” “Opportunity,” and “So Beautiful.” His music, a unique blend of acoustic, rock, and folk, is known for its positive and stirring sound. Decades into his career, Murray released his eighth studio album, “Longing,” in October of 2025. The album is his first completely independent release in over two decades, a milestone he’s particularly proud of.

Friday, August 14 – Goldie Boutilier with opening DJ Nat Morel

Goldie Boutilier is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose cinematic blend of noir-pop, Americana, and torch-song balladry explores themes of tragic romance, glamour and survival. Raised on the music of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, she signed her first record deal with Interscope at 21, later reclaiming her independence and voice through a trilogy of acclaimed EPs – “Cowboy Gangster Politician” (2022), “Emerald Year” (2023), and “The Actress” (2024).

With over 70 million streams, praise from Elton John and Zane Lowe, and performances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, and on tour with Orville Peck, she has established herself as one of today’s most fearless storytellers. Her debut album, “Goldie Boutilier Presents… Goldie Montana”, introduces her alter ego: a fiercely glamorous outlaw inspired by the anti-heroes of Scarface and Casino. Written as both confession and reclamation, the album chronicles her battles for control, resilience through exploitation, and the transformation of shame into power.

Thursday, August 20 – Galactic feat. Jelly Joseph with opening DJ PRAiZ

For over 30 years, Galactic has been a powerhouse of New Orleans music, fusing funk, jazz, rock, and soul into a sound that’s unmistakably their own. Originally coming together in the ’90s as a late-night funk band, the group has grown into a genre-defying collective that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Their high-energy live shows and adventurous collaborations have earned them a loyal following around the world.

In recent years, Galactic has been touring and recording with dynamic vocalist Jelly Joseph, whose soulful, commanding voice adds a powerful new dimension to their sound. The band also serves as the owner and steward of the legendary Tipitina’s music venue, where they host iconic performances and foster the next generation of New Orleans artists. In 2021, they launched Tipitina’s Record Club, an all-vinyl label celebrating the city’s rich musical legacy. Their newest release, Audience With the Queen (out April 11, 2025), marks a major milestone: a full-length collaboration with Irma Thomas, the beloved “Soul Queen of New Orleans.”

Friday, August 21 – Trooper with opening DJ ShotSki

With millions of records, a couple of dozen hits, a JUNO Award for Band of the Year, and ongoing sold-out shows across Canada, it’s no exaggeration to say that Trooper has become a Canadian legend. Universal Music acknowledges them as “one of Canada’s top five selling bands of all time,” and the Vancouver Sun has called them “Canadian rock heroes of the first order … the best performing band in Canada”.

 In 2023, they were inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame. Then, as now, what makes Trooper what they are is great performances and great pop songwriting. Trooper’s ten studio albums have earned multiple gold and platinum awards, and their 6 X Platinum greatest hits. “Hot Shots” continues to be one of Universal Music Canada’s best selling catalog CDs and one of the country’s most enduring party soundtracks.

Thursday, August 27 – Drag in the Mountains with opening DJs Vital Signs

The end of summer doesn’t need to be a drag – but we are definitely bringing drag back to the mountains. The Whistler Summer Concert Series is proud to present a night full of amazing drag performances with stars from Canada’s Drag Race, including the winner of season 4, VENUS, season 2 finalist KENDALL GENDER, and stars from Season 5 and 6, Tiffany Ann Co & Hazel. Joined by Vancouver’s Next Drag Superstar All Stars winner, Mya and many more.

Friday, August 28 – The Hip Abduction with opening DJ J to the U

Evoking the ocean and guided by the spirit of travel, The Hip Abduction pilots a sonic expedition past genre barriers. The band is the moniker for singer/songwriter David New, who writes and produces music in between travel excursions and touring. Live shows morph into a versatile musical ensemble consisting of Matt Poynter (drums), Chris Powers (bass), Justino Walker (guitar, vocals, ngoni), Cody Moore (keys, sax), and Will Phillips (percussion); each of whom has a mutual appreciation for African (Afrobeat/Soukous/Malian Blues), Reggae, and American (jam/electronic/indie) music.

Since 2012, the band has played almost every noteworthy music festival in the US, has landed major TV/movie syncs and SiriusXM radio spins, have 1.2M+ monthly listeners on Spotify, have provided direct cross country tour support for artists like Dirty Heads, Galactic, Slightly Stoopid, The Revivalists, and whose highly energized live shows have landed the 5-piece a sizable fanbase across the US and Canada.

Getting There

The Whistler Summer Concert Series and Movies in the Plaza are being held at Whistler Olympic Plaza, in Whistler Village North. If your accommodation is in Whistler Village, then it’s an easy walk along the Village Stroll, but if you’re a little further afield, then consider using some pedal power.

The car-free Whistler Valley Trail stretches for 46 kilometres, connecting Whistler’s lakes, parks and neighbourhoods, the perfect way to cruise in for some mountain tunes. When you get to Whistler Olympic Plaza, there’s a complimentary bike valet service you can use to make sure your ride (and any other gear) is safe, which supports Whistler’s Big Moves climate action strategy.

What to Bring (and Not to Bring)

• It can be hot in the sun, but as soon as it drops behind the mountains, it can get a little chilly, so bring layers.
• The concerts happen rain or shine, but don’t bring an umbrella or a tent to the concert, as it will be a view blocker!
• We suggest packing a picnic blanket to lie on the lawn, and if you’re considering bringing chairs, make sure they’re not too big or tall to block the view for other concert-goers.
• Kids and fur babies are welcome, but be aware that people will be picnicking and are there to enjoy the tunes, so it’s not ideal if they’re playing food defence against your pooch or curious toddler.
• If you’re going to be picnicking, bring your reusable drink bottles, straws, cutlery and other eating implements to reduce the usage of the recycling bins around the plaza area.

Dine Early

A lot of your favourite Whistler restaurants will be opening earlier on concert days, so check in with them to see if you can get an early reservation before the music starts. They may also have additional take-out options if you do want to dine while the music plays.

Where to Eat Nearby

Whistler Olympic Plaza is ideally situated close to Main Street, a hub of grab-and-go food options. The Deli by Picnic offers beautifully curated charcuterie boxes and a range of sandwiches and vegan wraps. La Cantina is a laid-back, quick option full of Mexican flavour and a local favourite.

There’s Peaked Pies where you can get an Aussie-style pie topped with mashed potato, mushy peas and gravy (they also do sweet treats and great coffees). Splitz Grill is where to go for burgers and fries (they have milkshakes too), and Hunter Gather does a yummy chicken shawarma and pulled jackfruit sandwich.

We also love the fresh pizza at Pasta Lupino (bought by the slice), a box of Crispy Chilli Beef or Pad Thai from Main Street Noodles or a fresh ahi poke tuna bowl from Main Street Poke. You could also pop into Fresh St. Market (which closes at 10 PM) to grab some goodies, including organic, cold-pressed juices, Whistler Roasting Company (coffee) and a range of gourmet donuts.

You can ride (it’s not a formal competition), or come and watch! It’s yet another sporting event centred on being outside, in the snow, having fun.

NEW! Safety Shred Days Presented by Arc’teryx & The Adventure Group

Designed for backcountry riders of all levels, Safety Shred Days on Monday, April 6, is a full-day mountain safety event created for riders who are pushing their limits the smart way. It focuses on avalanche awareness, risk management and real-world decision-making. The layout is small-group sessions with accredited mountain guides and safety professionals, combining practical theory, dryland learning and hands-on practice.

Safety Shred Days was founded in France by professional snowboarder Victor Daviet in response to real avalanche experiences and close calls in the mountains. The focus isn’t on a certification, but building confidence, sharper judgment, and better habits to carry with you in the mountains.

The Grind

The grand finale of The Grind, a premier, street-style ski and board competition, is happening above the Catskinner Chair on Blackcomb Mountain (new location due to snow conditions lower down) on Friday, April 10 (ski) and Saturday, April 11 (snowboard). Expect jaw-dropping tricks and an electric atmosphere as some of the most progressive riders from around the world descend on Whistler to show their stuff.

The Grind Series has a goal of pushing the boundaries of street-style snowboarding, to challenge athletes, ignite creativity and then give that skill and dedication a platform. Slush Cup Presented by Corona and Supported by Celsius Energy

This event is a LOT of fun. Contestants attempt to make their way across an icy, slushy pool on their skis or board, typically sporting some kind of outfit (or the lack of one). I’m not sure what’s more thrilling, watching or taking part! Prizes are given out for Best Costume, Best Trick, Best Wipe-Out, and more.

See if you’ve got what it takes to brave the slush or simply cheer on the contestants on Sunday, April 12, 2026, right outside the Glacier Creek Lodge area on Blackcomb Mountain.

NEW! The Powder Puck Classic – Ski vs Snowboard Charity Hockey Matchup

We all know there’s a “friendly” rivalry between skiers and snowboarders, so WSSF is taking that to the ice (flat ice to be precise) to raise money for charity on April 6 at Meadow Park Sports Centre. The event features a live DJ, in-game announcers, liquor service, giveaways and prizing throughout the night, creating a lively spectator experience for athletes, locals and fans alike.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the McMorris Foundation. Learn more on the WSSF website.

Culture Events at WSSF

Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Perfected over years and years of festivals, some core culture events have stood the test of time to return for this year’s festival, like the 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Pro Photo Showcase (new format this year), and Intersection on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Tickets sell out fast for these events, so make sure you get yours asap!

The Whistler Conference Centre is the off-the-slopes WSSF Base Camp, and Whistler Village will also be buzzing with the Village Expo, running April 9 to 12, featuring activations and demo tents (typically with some fun freebies). Lavazza, Volvo, Rockstar, Salomon, Nikwax, No Days Wasted, and Duer are among the brands you’ll find on the stroll from 10 AM to 4 PM.

WSSF Culture Events Overview:

• 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown presented by YETI (April 7) challenges teams to shoot, edit and produce a three to five-minute film captured within 100 kilometres of Whistler in just 72 hours.
• Intersection, presented by Arc’teryx (April 8), pushes artistic snow sports crews to their limits. Five invited crews have 12 days within a four-week window to shoot, edit and submit a five to seven-minute cinematic, winter action sports film. This is an adrenaline-filled night!
• Pro Photo Showcase is the new format for the beloved Pro Photographer Showdown. This year, they’re celebrating 30 years of incredible photography by exhibiting photos from over the decades in the grand foyer of the Whistler Conference Centre during the festival (free to enter).

WSSF’s Live Outdoor Music Series

The live music lineup for WSSF is legendary, bringing in world-class acts and epic party vibes every year to the base of Whistler Mountain, all for free. This year, Skiers Plaza delivers the beats, with the lineup including Juno-winning artists across a range of genres, including EDM, reggae and hip hop.

Thursday, April 9: ZADA & Surf Hat

Opening the stage on Thursday, April 9, is Whistler-based artist ZADA, a rising voice in Canada’s alternative R&B scene whose soulful sound bridges cultures and genres.

She’s followed by Squamish-based psych-surf duo Surf Hat, fresh off an Australian tour. Known for their electric live performances, catchy hooks, and reverb-soaked guitars, Surf Hat will bring a high-energy set to kick off the Outdoor Live Music Series.

Friday, April 10: The Funk Hunters & DJ Vandelux

On Friday, April 10, the energy shifts to electronic as the decks are taken over by iconic DJs, with Canadian duo The Funk Hunters hitting the stage at 3 PM. The Funk Hunters, who have reached #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Chart and performed at major festivals including Red Rocks, Coachella, Burning Man, and Shambhala.

Vancouver-born producer and DJ Vandelux, a.k.a. Evan White, will keep the party going with a dynamic DJ set. Spinning a kaleidoscope of emotion into pulsating beats, glistening keys and iridescent melodies, Vandelux delivers a sound that moves seamlessly between introspective and euphoric.

In addition to his Friday performance, he returns Sunday for a special Slush Cup DJ set on Blackcomb Mountain, bringing his signature sound to one of WSSF’s most iconic spring traditions.

Saturday, April 11: Maestro Fresh Wes & Snotty Nose Rez Kids

Saturday, April 11, is a celebration of Canadian hip-hop, led by the Godfather of Canadian Hip-Hop, Maestro Fresh Wes (Wes Williams). The Toronto-born trailblazer will take the stage with a legacy defined by historic firsts, including becoming the first Black Canadian artist to achieve gold and platinum status in Canada.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids (Yung Trybez and Young D), originally from Kitamaat Village, British Columbia, will bring their powerful presence to the WSSF stage. As one of the most recognized hip-hop acts in the country, they are known for sharp lyricism and fearless storytelling delivered through a high-voltage live show.

Sunday, April 12: Jah Cutta & Bedouin Soundclash

The series wraps Sunday, April 12, with a celebration of reggae and global sounds. Known as Canada’s King of Reggae, the Jamaica-born, Montreal-based artist Jah Cutta brings his uplifting, roots-driven sound and over four decades of performance experience to the stage.

Closing out the Outdoor Live Music Series are Canadian indie rock and reggae mainstays Bedouin Soundclash, whose genre-defying career has earned them JUNO Awards, Top 10 radio hits, and international tours alongside No Doubt, Ben Harper, The Interrupters, and Thievery Corporation.

After Dark Series

WSSF Base Camp

Head to the Whistler Conference Centre on April 7 and 8 to check out the WSSF Base Camp. There’s a mini skateboard ramp (check the schedule for skate times), the Arc’teryx ReBIRD program (gear trade-ins), the Pro Photo Showcase gallery, arcade games and more free fun. Base Camp can be accessed for free from 10 AM to 5 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday, with access from 6 to 7 PM exclusive to event ticket holders (Intersection and 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown).

1. Book early – The combination of killer spring weather and tons of entertainment means WSSF draws big crowds. Art After Dark: Whistler Paint & Sip Nights

Drawn together by a love of music, the Whistler Singers have been spreading melody through the Garibaldi Range for decades, reminding visitors and locals alike that human connection is the beating heart of this town.

The Sound of Whistler

Step into the local community school on a Tuesday evening, and you might just hear it. Friendly chatter, a few notes on the piano and then, harmony. Long before the snow falls and winter enthusiasts flock back to our famous slopes, the Whistler Singers embrace the festive spirit a little early. From early September to the end of April, a group of over 50 strong fills the halls of Myrtle Phillip with songs of the season.

Their performances at holiday celebrations, Remembrance ceremonies and local gatherings have become part of the town’s vibrant arts scene. Founded over 30 years ago by a handful of locals drawn together by a love of singing, the group has grown into a powerful ensemble of all ages and skill levels.

While some members hail from heavy musical backgrounds, others learn by ear. Some read sheet music while others memorize and practice at home. What unites them isn’t perfection, it’s passion.

“The Whistler Singers started small”, says longtime member turned conductor Alison Hunter. “But it’s always been about more than just music. It’s about connection – the kind you can feel”

Whistler Singers – A Brief History

Back before Whistler had secured itself as a world-class ski destination, the Whistler Singers were quietly carving out a cultural space within the quaint ski town back in the early 80s.

Developed to fulfill a need for singing around the holidays, the group’s initial roots were planted in Whistler’s iconic Skier’s Chapel in 1982, led by the likes of Ray Weens and Molly Boyd. It was Canada’s only ski-in-ski-out interdenominational chapel that lived slopeside in Creekside.

In the early days, village carolling had its own unique Whistler flair. Members would roll a borrowed liquor cart through Whistler Village, complete with a piano on top, spreading cheer long before portable speakers were a thing. Over the years, they’ve grown in both size and spirit.

Today, the Whistler Singers are called upon to perform at community events and seasonal celebrations. Their presence at the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Remembrance Day Ceremony is solemn and a meaningful contribution to one of Whistler’s most important ceremonies. Carolling and holiday performances have become a beloved local tradition, spreading holiday cheer throughout Whistler.

Why Singing Matters – The Community Impact

Whistler’s community runs deep in the valley, but it’s sometimes hard to spot in the transient nature of our town. For the Whistler Singers, though, it’s openly on display.

Ask anyone in the choir why they sing, and you’ll get answers far beyond music. Although studies show singing in a choir benefits brain health by boosting mood, improving cognitive function and enhancing structural brain connectivity, for many, it’s about a sense of belonging, friendship and creativity.

“Choir is like a sports team with nobody on the bench,” says Hunter. “They can be a chatty bunch. Sometimes it’s like herding cats, but we foster friendships, and we love our social time. You see friendships strung throughout the group.”

In a town known for adventure, the choir exists as an alternate experience to Whistler’s action-packed scene. It’s a place for musical folks to find a sense of belonging off the slopes.

Festive Traditions and Village Magic

Every year, the Whistler Singers are called upon to mark the holidays as visitors from across the globe flock to town. Whether it be at tree lighting ceremonies, hotel foyers, ballroom concerts or carolling through town, their voices echo across the Whistler Valley.

Carolling is an especially special tradition as the glow of festive lights and the harmony of familiar songs fill the snow-dusted cobblestone streets of the Village Stroll.  It’s a scene that feels straight out of a snow globe.

What Lies Ahead

As Whistler’s worldly presence evolves, the town continues to rely on the Whistler Singers to bring music to the valley. Looking ahead, the group dreams of greater community involvement, more singing opportunities and perhaps an adventure or two beyond the valley.

With Alison at the helm, the Whistler Singers will continue to show up where it matters most: at community events, local celebrations, and to share songs with visitors who attend their performances or catch them spreading holiday cheer around the village.

Whistler will always be recognized for its mountains and outdoor adventure, but the Whistler Singers remind us all that in a world of modern stress and disconnection, a song can bring us all back together.

Join the Choir – How to Get Involved

New members are welcome to join the Whistler Singers within the first month of each choir season. The fall season runs from September to late December, and the winter one from January to April. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays, from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Myrtle Philip Community School.

Remember, you don’t need to be a professional singer to join (no audition required). The group is more focused on community, friendship and celebrating a love of music.

As a registered non-profit organization, the group relies on member fees, donations and volunteers to keep the choir operational. This includes rehearsal space, help moving equipment, venue rental and new music.

How It All Began

Ace first came to Whistler “when the village was a garbage dump” (for more on this, read part one of our four-part history series or visit the Whistler Museum when you’re here). Born and raised in Kamloops, British Columbia, she travelled here with her family as a teenager to ski. She moved to Whistler permanently at 21, working first as a server and then as a go-go dancer for close to 20 years at the famed Tommy Africa’s (where Après Après now is).

Scotty came when he was 22, by way of Vancouver via Ottawa via New Brunswick. A “hardcore kid,” he started hearing about Whistler while working at a skate shop in the country’s capital. The manager of a skateboarding team and a bit of a punk, he “showed up in Whistler with a record collection.”

Scotty recounts being in the Savage Beagle (another, since-closed, Whistler institution) on a Saturday night when the house DJ was publicly fired on the spot. Scotty was told to get in the booth, “This was when clubs had their own records,” and he stayed. But, with him, and his new gig, came his own records; a stark contrast to the “Meatloaf and Moondance” soundtrack that the town was tuned into and attuned to. Whistler wasn’t ready, but Ace was…

Spinning the Scene

Soon enough, Scotty was working at Tommy Africa’s, too.

“Scotty would throw stuff in that people weren’t expecting.”

The two would work in tandem – the dancer and the DJ – with Scotty reflecting on how, “If Ace liked it – then she could sell it,” with Ace fondly appreciating how Scotty would always “change up the rhythm.” There was nothing predictable here. Working at a time when “no toques” were allowed in the club, the two were instrumental in changing the culture of music in Whistler. “We were doing mash-up things before mash-up was a thing.”

And though there was some kickback and resistance, as there often is when something new hits the scene, the tables began to turn (pun intended) and what began to unfold musically in this town began to set it apart. Being a DJ from Whistler suddenly held clout in the late 90s/early 2000s. Scotty recounts how the first Redbull 3Style International DJ Competition was inspired by the cutting-edge Whistler scene.

And scene it was. There was the music. But there were also the sports. And then the artists who married the two.

Ace and Scotty were both, concurrently, active here too. Ace specialized in filming wide-angled, fish-eyed footage gathered from skiing alongside athletes on the hill. She worked with Greg Stump Productions for ten years. Scotty, the snowboarder, worked with Adventure Scope, designing the films’ sound scores. These were pivotal players in the mountain sports films, the next wave, after Warren Miller’s breakthrough films. This was the arena these two were playing in.

The DJ and the Dancer

Ace and Scotty became a couple in 2003, their status transitioning while hanging out at a local residence fondly nicknamed “Chez Serious”, a once-upon-a-time hub for some of Whistler’s more colourful characters and parties. And characters, in the best sense of the word, they both are.

And so, the fairytale of the DJ and the dancer took a new turn – the ultimate mash-up – part renegade, part badass, with a huge quotient of soul. But what this dynamic couple does radiate is the deepest love and respect for each other. It’s impossible to ignore or miss. Even after being together for over twenty years, the way these two interact is nothing short of incredible and inspiring.

Though she always had her own records, it was Scotty who really encouraged Ace to start spinning vinyl way, way back when. Along with being a go-go dancer and a ski filmmaker, she was also an event organizer: “Me and a couple friends threw the first rave at the Conference Centre ever.”

With Scotty’s encouragement, it was a natural segue that she began playing publicly. Ace started with après gigs at the GLC in the mid-2000s. She reminisces how she would joke that her DJ name “should have been ‘The Owner’s Daughter’ – because I was so crap!” But Ace was anything but crap, she had indeed become, The Foxy Moron.

Pioneering Cred

The notable couple have a long list of accomplishments, endorsements and a lot of firsts. Thus, the pioneering, status. And, though, humbly dismissed, the term Legend would not be a misnomer for either of them – however, both are quick to point out that it’s “the ones who make the music, who are the legends.” But making music and producing albums makes its way in here too. Ace just may have written (yes, she did!) some lyrics for a Billy Idol song.

Scotty has been in multiple punk and funk bands (as a singer/word spewer) and signed a record deal in 2000 as one half of the duo Wicked Lester, in which he laid down the beats. The group recorded three full-length albums and released 30 singles. Ace plays their music all the time and she proudly notes how one of their 45s is a collector’s item valued at $3,000. The two continuously uphold the other.

Ace played at the first Bass Coast Festival. She still does. So too, have they both been regulars on the Shambhala Festival line-up. Scotty, or Vinyl Ritchie, played the Vans Park Series for years. This took him through the States and across Europe. He also had a steady gig at Mandalay Bay in Vegas.

The two of them were Burning Man regulars, bringing snowmaking to the desert, with their annual Après Ski Party: “all vinyl in the dust.” The DJ and the Dancer were two of the main entertainers for athletes in Canada House during the 2006 Torino Olympics; they were also quintessential spinners during the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. But amongst all the highlights, both reflect that “playing music on the mountain is the greatest gift we’ve ever had.”

Mountain Music Magic

Playing on the mountain no longer takes the form of going up on the chairlift, carting turntables, records and a mixer, then strapping in and riding down to the terrain park, loaded down with all the gear, to set up and spin vinyl in exchange for a ski pass. The duo’s mountain music-sharing adventures have developed over the years, finding them playing in the Monster Booth events at Glacier Creek, on a variety of patios and DJing for a host of happenings, including the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The two play independently and together. And it is always an absolute treat to experience one of their sets. And “experience” is the most apt word, for both the Foxy Moron and Vinyl Ritchie are synonymous with creating immersive environments, moods, “a vibe” forever fresh, original, alive and as simultaneously unpredictable and cohesive as the next curve ball that they seamlessly blend together. They are experts at reading the crowd. Their musical knowledge is mind-blowing. They are masters of their craft: spinning artistry into their delivery, which distinguishes them from the masses.

Disc-Jockeying

Vinyl Ritchie and Foxy Moron spin records. Actual discs. They are Disc Jockeys. The real deal. They are not “USBjs.” They still break records and drop new tracks. Without flinching, they claim they “wouldn’t be interested in DJing without a turntable.”

They don’t use controllers. They don’t use sync buttons. They stand out amongst the ubiquity of the formulaic, quantization of the club-music scene and plugged-in Spotify playlists, suddenly flooded with “everyone’s a DJ – but they’re not…”

Two-of-a-Special-Kind

The eclectic and electrifying sets of Vinyl Ritchie and Foxy Moron serve as a wonderful metaphor for this town which they have called home for over thirty years; a place they still describe as “magical.”

The Foxy Moron and Vinyl Ritchie, simply put, are in a league of their own. When in Whistler, prioritizing catching one or more of their sessions should be at the top of your list.

What is it about these mountains that draw people to them and then won’t let them go? How does the balance of work and lifestyle work here? What gets under people’s skin and embeds itself so deep that Whistler becomes part of their soul?

We ask a variety of Whistler locals Why Whistler? In Video 10, we chat with musicians Helen Hamilton and Charlie Stenner of Little Earthquakes. We talk about drawing creative inspiration from the mountains, flow state and coffee art.

How Did You End Up in Whistler?

Charlie (C): I’m from a little island called Guernsey, which is in the English Channel. Just after finishing university, I came on a holiday with family to BC and I just loved it so much that I decided to come back, and I stuck around. As everyone says, I came for the winter and stayed for the summer.

Helen (H): I’m from South London, in a place called Epsom in Surrey. I came to Whistler in 2014 shortly after I separated from my ex-husband; it was a getaway, get-over-trip. I stayed with my best friend who eventually convinced me to get a working visa and move out here.

The main reason I stayed here is that I fell completely in love with the town, the scenery. I knew that I wanted to stay because I felt a completely different energy here. I was in London before, working really hard, a little burnt out perhaps, and Whistler was this amazing tonic of outdoor life that I’d never experienced before, and I became absolutely smitten with it.

What’s the Vibe of Whistler?

H: It’s this mix of this tiny, little mountain town with amazing scenery that almost feels like this enchanted place, but mix that with so many tourists and so many people living here from different cultures that you kinda get that slight buzz of the city. This works for me because, coming from London, I still needed a bit of buzz, a bit of nightlife and big energy, and you get it in Whistler through the people and the tourism, but you’ve also got the wide-open spaces and this amazing, beautiful landscape that feels kind of endless.

How Did You Get Into Music?

C: I asked for a drum kit one Christmas, my parents said that would be too loud, so they got me a guitar instead. I’m sure I had a tantrum about it, but I decided to give the guitar a go and got really, really into it.

H: I first got into music with my ex-husband; we were in a band together in our early 20s. We performed together for about eight years, travelling all over Europe in an electronic duo, booking all our own shows and leading a very cool, DIY, music lifestyle. Then I went on to play all over Europe in a party band, doing high-end events for people like Google and Asahi Whiskey, which was full-time back in London. Then, moving here, I’ve been doing music since I landed. I went to the local jam nights and started playing music in different bands and duos.

How Did You Meet?

C: Helen and I have been playing music together for two years. Helen runs vintage pop-up events in Whistler, and we met because she booked one of my previous music projects to play. When the other half of that music project, Ellie, decided to go back to the UK, Helen stepped in and here we are!

H: I saw Charlie play at one of his early gigs at Cranked and I asked him to play at one of my vintage pop-up events, which I run every month in Whistler and Squamish. I loved his sound and when I heard his music partner was leaving, I approached Charlie about making music together and we’ve been doing that for nearly two years now. Charlie feels like family to me.

How Would You Describe Your Sound?

C: Indie, folk, alternative. It’s got quite a mystical melancholy to it. We’re going for that enchanting, sad space.

H: Originally styled, cover versions of alts, pop, lofi, R&B, a kind of rocky sound. We love making original versions of quite well-known songs, and we also play some more obscure, melancholy, enchanting songs as well. Someone recently described us as heartbreak and hope, which I really like.

I relate to heartbreak and anything that feels really emotive. I remember watching a singer who said they suffered to sing happy songs, and I really resonated with that. I like anything that goes deep and talks about hard times in life, and I like expressing my emotions, it’s almost like writing a journal, getting it all out. It’s better to get emotions out rather than keeping them suppressed inside.

What’s Your Favourite Thing About Playing Music?

C: Forgetting myself. When I’m completely immersed in what I’m doing, I feel whole and complete.

H: I used to ride my bike when I was six, another reason I love Whistler is the mountain biking, but I used to ride along my street and sing songs to myself and make up lyrics. I stood up at school and said I wanted to be a singer, so it’s something inside me that I knew I had to do.

When I write music and when I’m performing, I’m in my complete flow state; nothing else matters and nothing beats it.

I’m inspired by playing in Whistler. We did a show right on the shores of Alta Lake, at The Point Artist-Run Centre, where we watched paddle-boarders and boats go by as we performed in the sunshine; it was absolutely beautiful and I have to pinch myself because I genuinely can’t believe I’m living in one of the world’s most beautiful places, doing what I love the most.

What’s the Music Scene Like in Whistler?

C: Healthy. It’s supported by the fact that Whistler is a big tourist destination, to that end musicians can actually make a living here. That has its own traps in terms of where the music territory goes. Artists always have to deal with the tension between pleasing the masses and following individual creativity. It’s a difficult balance to strike. There are a lot of venues that want the same, familiar setlist; that doesn’t necessarily encourage artists to nurture their own projects.

H: It’s buzzing. There are loads of musicians. The first jam night I went to was at Crystal Lounge, I met a lot of musicians that night. There are some old-timers who have been here a long time and there are loads of newbies coming in all the time. It’s amazing to see such a merging of different talent and different experiences from all over the world come together and because of that, you have a real mix of genres, musicians, instruments and abilities. Whistler really stands up to a city because of that mix.

Is Whistler Supportive of Its Artists?

C: It’s immensely supportive of artists in general. Whistler, and more broadly, Canada, has great funding for the arts; it’s valued. But at the ripe, old age of 25, I haven’t lived in a lot of places. It beats Guernsey.

H: The community really supports its artists. There are so many bars offering live music. You can possibly be performing a similar set each week as your audiences changes because they’re tourists, so that works well for repeat gigs; you can’t do the same in London, or many places in the world. The Resort Municipality of Whistler and Arts Whistler really help you out with shows; we just finished a mentorship program which was all funded and was an amazing experience. I’ve never felt more supported as a musician.

What Makes Whistler a Good Place for Creatives?

C: It’s the same thing that the mountain bikers love, the snowboarders love, and it’s a different way of them accessing that sense of losing yourself in your practice. That is a different expression of life, and being fully involved in living.

What Makes Whistler Special and Unique?

C: It attracts lots of people who have a lust for life; the community is buzzing with that energy.

H: I’ve heard this story multiple times here, people say; I’ve been all over the world, I came here and I stayed. That is the essence of Whistler. I’ve travelled a lot myself and you stop here, and you don’t go anywhere else. As a musician, I used to want to travel all the time, tour and gig, but since moving to Whistler, I don’t need to do that. I’m happy to stay in Whistler and play on those patios because I love it here.

What Do You Love About Whistler More Than Anywhere Else in the World?

C: How big everything is and how it makes me feel like a child again. Everything – the trees, the skunk cabbages; nature is absolutely breathtaking here and I am in constant wonder of it.

H: I can combine all the things I love doing with outdoor sports. I can do the bike park, I can snowboard, skateboard, do yoga, but I can also make a living here through lots of different ways, and it’s a beautiful place to do that. Whistler is great for anyone who loves the outdoors and loves nature. I was in the bike park a few weeks ago and we saw deer, rabbits and a bear. I love it when people come to visit me because I start exploring Whistler again; it’s like you’re reliving your first time at Cheakamus Lake or your first time on the gondola and PEAK 2 PEAK.

What Other Things Do You Do in Whistler?

H: I do a lot of things in Whistler, and that’s not to just make ends meet, it’s to fulfill my own motivations, I’m a very driven sort of person. Alongside music, I run monthly vintage nights because I have a passion for sustainable and environmentally-friendly fashion. I’m also a wedding makeup artist, that’s my training, my background, as I trained at the London School of Fashion in editorial makeup, and now I’m busy with weddings all year round.

I also make coffee at Mount Currie Coffee Co., which was voted Whistler’s Best Coffee in 2020. I’ve been making coffees since the day I arrived and I’ve loved every minute and I’ve met so many locals. I’ve really become aware of what a beautiful community Whistler is through the coffee shop, so I still work there part-time. Before I worked there I was actually caffeine-free, not anymore! I love the culture, the creativity; it’s a wonderfully social job, and it’s an art form. I learned my latte art at Mount Currie, it took me months to get up to scratch, my specialty is a bear!

What Does the Average Summer Day Look Like for You?

C: I will inevitably go to a lake and cool off. Camping in the evening. Spending time with friends. Patio gigs. I’ve just bought a bike and I’m looking forward to zipping around the Valley Trail on that.

H: I do yoga on my deck in the sunshine. I love breakfast at Alpine Cafe. I will go mountain biking if it’s not too hot, or come skating at the Whistler Skate Park. I’ll definitely go sit by a lake, maybe do the bike park in the evening and I love hiking too!

Do You Skate?

C: It was my great love before music. I was seven when I got my first board. I fell away from it at university but always came back to it on holidays. The island that I come from doesn’t have a skate park, so having a skate park like this one in Whistler is incredible.

H: I learned skateboarding at 32, which is pretty late in life, but I believe that you can pick up any skill at any time. I came to Whistler for six weeks in the winter of 2016 and then went back to London, which I was a bit depressed about because I’d wanted to stay. My best friend taught me how to skateboard to cheer me up. I learned to drop in, some tricks, but it was really to try and cheer me up from leaving Whistler!

Where Do You Dream of Playing in Whistler?

C: I’d love to play a jazz set at the lounge in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, and I’d love to play up the mountain at the Roundhouse; that sounds like an adventure, you take your instruments on the gondola, zip up the mountain and you’re on top of the world, playing music, what more could you ask?

Has Living in Whistler Changed or Influenced You in Any Way?

C: It’s opened my eyes to a huge variety of cultures and walks of life. I think it’s a place where people of lots of different ages hang out and it doesn’t matter because they’re inspired by the thing that they’re doing, and that generation thing is broken down. I have quite a lot of friends who are older; I think Whistler’s an amazing place with a huge variety of ages and cultures, and it’s expanded my being.

H: I’m way more in-tune with myself and my emotions. I get outside a lot more, slowing down has helped me become a better version of myself; I’ve got to know the real me. In London, it was such a fast-paced life that I’d kind of forgotten who I was. Moving to Whistler has allowed me to reconnect with myself.

What Are Some of the Challenges Living in Whistler?

C: Trying to find a solitary spot if you want to have nature to yourself; that’s very greedy of me. I think keeping away from mosquitos is a bit tiresome. Paid parking. Having to leave.

H: Housing. There’s not a lot of opportunities. I share a house and it’s great, but I’d love to find more permanent, secure housing. It’s expensive, but you work hard and you make it work because it’s a really great place to be.

What Gives Whistler its Heart and Soul?

C: The great community of people here that love the mountains and keep the place running.

H: Whistler’s not only an amazing landscape, a beautiful mix of lakes, mountains and forests, but it’s combined with this amazing community that has found heaven on earth and has come together for the same reason. There’s this connecting vibe that way.

For over twenty years, musical duo, The Hairfarmers have been helping people from all over the world to celebrate in Whistler. They’re there at the end of your epic pow day, when you rip it in the bike park, get some good thigh burn on a lengthy hike, breathe deeply after a dip in our glacially-fed lakes and everything in between. They literally embody Whistler’s celebratory spirit.

They were also there when all that stopped.

Back in March 2020, when Canada went into lockdown, The Hairfarmers helped raise two hundred thousand dollars for food banks throughout the Sea to Sky. They played a series of virtual après sessions from a garage in Whistler, with people tuning in from all over the world for their uplifting mountain sounds.

And Whistler wanted to say thank you to The Hairfarmers. But, being Whistler, thank you meant a day of epic mountain adventures. The teams at Canadian Wilderness Adventures, Blackcomb Helicopters, Forged Axe Throwing and Coast Mountain Brewing put together a wild itinerary and the Insider got to tag along with camera in hand.

Here’s how we said thank you to two local legends who embody Whistler’s celebratory community spirit, keeping it burning when times got tough.

Meet The Hairfarmers

In between adventures, I spent time with Greg Reamsbottom (Grateful Greg) and Doug Craig (Guitar Doug) and I have to say it was hilarious, illuminating and a real honour. We talked Braveheart, pixie dust and then a whisky jack landed on Doug’s hand.

They really are Whistler rock stars, with stories about naked conga lines at sushi restaurants, getting 60 laps of fresh powder fun while heli-skiing with the Austrian ski team and being asked for a business card from a British filmmaker who flew them to London to play Oasis. Legends.

What’s the history of The Hairfarmers?

Greg – Doug and I met at a wedding up at Birkenhead Lake. He’d been hired with another guy he played with back then to play a wedding and I knew the bride and groom from a different circle of people. I was still living in Vancouver at the time. They didn’t tell either of us that they’d hired another band and that can go either way, but we ended up jamming until six in the morning. It was a hilarious wedding and a really good time.

It so happens that I met a girl from Whistler a year later, moved up here, and started sitting in a few of the gigs Doug was playing around town. Before you know it the bar manager was like, hey, how much would it be for both of you to play? And it went from there.

Was it love at first jam?

Doug – He’s my brother, he’s got my back always. I love him. He taught me how to love myself and he’s a really, really important person in my life. I’m really lucky.

Greg – You know when you hear what you’ve been looking for. I heard a guy have a level of attack on acoustic guitar that’s not usually humanly possible. And he heard somebody sing a harmony he’d been waiting to hear for forever, so it was a no brainer, we were kinda like, wait a second – there’s the guy.

You know when you know. Then it’s a question of can you work together because you can obviously play together. Twenty years down the road, we must have done something right ‘cause we’re still kicking butt and having fun. We travel the world together, sometimes we’re stuck together like glue for days on end and the fact we have straight noses and no black eyes means we’re doing it right.

Where does the name The Hairfarmers come from?

Greg – West Coast slang for hippies! Look at those hair farmers, they’ve got so much hair! We were on the road somewhere, might have been Vancouver Island, and we’d sleep in our trucks. Doug had this old Norwegian ski sweater and it had hair stuck to it everywhere. How do you get so much hair stuck to something? You must be a hair farmer. It was a light bulb moment.

Why music?

Doug – My grandmother was a child prodigy concert violinist. While I was in my mother’s womb, I was exposed to a lot of timbre and when I was born I was surrounded by musicians. My grandfather had a concert grand piano in his living room and we had the same Russian piano teacher.

My grandmother was a fan of the piano, but she had no idea my grandfather could play, he was taking lessons secretly on his lunch breaks in downtown Montreal. Our teacher called him one day and said, there’s a Steinway & Sons piano someone’s giving away. He had a crane remove the front window of their house so they could get it in. My grandmother came back from golf and he was playing a Rachmaninoff concerto much to her surprise. It was pretty inspiring. He was my first introduction to real music, with scales and reading music.

When I got to high school I pretty much drove everyone insane by breaking into the music room and having my own little rock concerts. I’m a musical omnivore, I listen to every type of music you could possibly think of. That’s my story.

Greg – Both my parents could not sing their way out of a wet paper bag, but they loved music. They had this killer good, old school 70s stereo system and a really good record collection, a lot of Johnny Mathis and Elvis and stuff like that from my dad, and my mum was really into R&B, a lot of Teddy Pendergrass, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Donna Summer and Prince.

My grandmother was the piano player and vocalist at her Baptist Church and I had to go to Sunday school every week and watch grandma play the piano. She’d be the one leading the hymns. Then in elementary school, I was in the choir, it wasn’t dorky back then, just something you did, it was cool. I just loved music, but I never had any formal training. I took the guitar in eighth grade, stuff like that, but it was just always a passion. I would sing along to the radio, the CD player, at parties at high school.

Everyone’s got the Doobie Brother’s cranked and I’d sing along and people would say, hey, you sound like the record. It kept happening, and eventually when we were old enough to sneak into bars, there was a band on stage and my brother goes up to the lead singer, unbeknownst to me, and tells him I can sing a better Led Zeppelin. The guy called my brother’s bluff and a wireless mic was stuck in my face and I went for it. The place went nuts. It went from there.

There are plenty of people who can play what we play; there are plenty of people who are probably technically better musicians. But then there’s that other thing that happens when certain people come together, whether it’s for sports or computer programming, it’s probably the same for any industry if that little bit of extra pixie dust is in there, it works. Pixie dust can be anywhere, but there’s extra pixie dust in Whistler.

What is it about music that brings people together?

Doug – It transcends barriers. It transcends economic barriers, language barriers, race barriers. Music has the ability to heal; it’s a very positive force. The way the message gets through is important. So, if you have harmony, balance and form, the way a song is put together, it’s really inviting. It resonates a higher frequency in people because we’re here to evolve, to love, to move away from fear and anger, and music is the movement of that energy.

Greg – It brings people to a memory too, just like certain smells from your childhood. You’ll hear a certain song and it’ll take you right back to a time and place, and you’ll remember who you were with and what you were doing. People play songs for a million different reasons, sometimes it’s a sad memory, sometimes it’s a super happy one. A good song can also be a proper time warp.

The Hairfarmers has been part of Whistler’s après scene for twenty years? What’s changed?

Greg – I moved up here in 1999 and Doug was here in 86/87. Back in the day, minors were not allowed in most of the bars. It was pretty rowdy. There was a lot more nudity. No one had phones with cameras, so anything you did in the bar was forgotten about three hours later when they’d had enough beer.

These days, you can’t get away with that without it being up on social media within two minutes. It’s morphed with the addition of minors being allowed in until 10 PM, but it’s cool. There are seven-year-olds in ski boots dancing and it’s so cool. Change is incremental and seems natural. The heart and soul of Whistler is still here.

What is the heart and soul of Whistler?

Greg – A bunch of likeminded people in a beautiful place. It’s not an easy place to live. It’s expensive, there are other challenges, but it’s one of those rare spots on the planet where you can walk out your back door and into some of the most beautiful terrain in the world. It’s hard to argue with that.

What do you love about living in the mountains? What about Whistler means home?

Doug – Fresh air, a real sense of community, my kids were made here. There’s a sense of magnanimity. There’s a real magnetism in the mountains, they have an energy. When you get up and you have those smells and that fresh air and you really feel energized and you look down the valley and it really renews everything.

When you’re not on stage, what are you up to?

Greg – In the winter, we’re looking for powder days. On rainy days, you know, you’ve got to do laundry, play with your cat. Any day you can get outside – hiking, biking, motorcycling. We have hobbies like working on motorcycles and cars. We’re normal people, nothing overly crazy.

What’s it like to be part of people’s celebrations?

Greg – If your whole job is to be around happy people and you try to make them happier, it’s a pretty darn good job. Our audiences show up already in a great mood, even a bad day skiing is better than a good day at the office; they’re already having a good time.

Our job is to throw gas on the fire and see if we can get them to go faster. For us, it’s addictive in a lot of ways because that energy is already in the room and then you get up there and add to it, you put it out there and it comes back to you.

How do you choose the music to get people’s ski boots knocking?

Greg – Doug’s the master of picking the right song for the right moment. He’s really good at reading the audience. If we hear a whole bunch of people from the UK or from Sweden or New York, we’ll start peppering in songs that are in their wheelhouse. Reading the audience is an art form and it comes with experience, but in Whistler, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, everyone’s ready to party.

Using that fishing analogy, if you put out a mosquito and they don’t bite you try a leech. Fortunate for us is that we’ve been playing for 20 years and we’ve got thousands of songs we can play together. So, if there’s a bunch of people from Texas we can play country for three hours if we want to. If there’s a bunch of people from Jamaica we could play reggae, although playing reggae in front of Jamaican’s is dangerous, they usually get up and show you how to do it properly. We actually went to Jamaica with Appleton Rum, we’re so lucky we get these opportunities.

Last year we went to Italy for a wedding in Tuscany and it was insane. We said, well, we’re here now, let’s stay and we went to Florence, got a villa in the Chianti region. We just had the best time, it was really cool.

How do you learn to read a room?

Doug – It’s a real subtle energy you pick up from the audience. There are a lot of visual cues. There’s also a dynamic to the volume when we walk into a room. Sometimes it’s crackling and really loud, other times it can be sombre or quiet if something heavy just happened like an accident on the mountain or could be some horrible thing that happened in the world, you pick up on it and play happy songs, pull people up.

If they’re really partying, like there’s a bunch of gold medals being handed out and they’re really stoked, then we’ll pull out the nitrous bottle and we’ll light the whole place on fire and burn it to the ground. Push all the lemmings off the ledge, and then you’re left with, well, the cast of Braveheart and it’s freedom time.

Have you noticed a change in the Whistler community since COVID?

Doug – Within our community people are always reaching out and seeing how we’re doing. It’s just nice when people in your circles, that you wouldn’t expect to call, reach out, just to check-in.

Greg – People have slowed down a bit. We know some pretty high-octane, high roller, business type guys who are in the middle of a conversation with you and their brains are already onto the next thing. Now they’re like so, I spent half an hour with my cat today, they’re talking slower, they’re moving slower, kind of more reflective. I think it’s forced the world to slow down a bit, which is not a bad thing. Everybody’s taken it out of sixth gear and put it back into fourth.

Whose idea was it to do the virtual fundraising concerts?

Greg – The idea actually hatched from a social post we did about having to cancel our shows due to COVID and someone from Whistler Live responded in the comments saying, why don’t we do a live stream? Doug and I were like, yeah that’s a great idea. This is a way we can stay connected with our audience and maybe help spread a bit of joy without any safety issues.

It was a really cool way to stay connected and keep our finger on the pulse and then it turned into a charity thing. We asked, where’s the need right now? The food banks were getting swamped, well, let’s make it something for the food bank. We thought we’d maybe raise five thousand dollars, and then when the first one, with Whistler Blackcomb (Foundation) matching, made over $50K we were like, wow, we can actually do some real good here.

It was also like everyone was so ready for some form of normalcy, even new normalcy, just to bring them back to a feeling of community, even if they’re not in the same room, they’re all watching the same thing, and the comments were just coming in like crazy. People were sending videos with people dancing with their babies in their living room with their laptops on their kitchen island. It was really neat. It really had a community feel to it and it took on a life of its own.

Last summer, The Hairfarmers, one of Whistler’s most famous bar bands, travelled to Italy to perform at a wedding.

While the bride had whole-heartedly accepted her groom’s proposal, she issued a stipulation: she wanted the well-honed, high-energy band to play the reception. Not surprisingly, she was a frequent Whistler visitor and always made time to catch the group during her stay.

“We’ve got people that literally book their wedding dates based on our availability,” says “Grateful” Greg Reamsbottom, lead singer and co-frontman. “It’s so cool.”

That anecdote sums up Whistler’s music scene: it might not be the main reason people visit the resort, but it often becomes a memorable part of their visit. From rock to bluegrass, country to pop, meet the mainstays of music in Whistler.

The Hairfarmers

I have to give a little more space to these guys, considering they just marked their 20^th anniversary as a band and are a pillar of Whistler’s music scene. In that time, they’ve built up a boggling arsenal of songs that’s reached around 2,500 — from Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan to Taylor Swift and Coldplay.

The Hairfarmers average a whopping 250 shows a year, so you’re likely to find those flowing locks during après, dinner, or as the main event at stages around Whistler during your stay.

Red Chair

The ski bum look — think slouchy toque, baggy jeans, and a big hoodie — is the typical style of choice in Whistler. So, if you spot someone rocking a leather jacket on the Village Stroll you might have just had a Red Chair sighting.

These rockers released their debut EP, Give It All, a couple years back and you can catch a few of their raw, guitar-driven tracks alongside covers at their regular Friday night Tapley’s gig.

Conor Fitzpatrick

This Irish transplant has become a rising star in the last year. The singer-songwriter arrived in Whistler in 2018 with his guitar in hand and quickly secured a regular Wednesday gig at Cranked Espresso Bar (located in Rainbow, a five-minute drive north from Whistler Village) before winning second place at the 2019 Whistler Music Search at the Crystal Lounge last October.

One party trick he likes to pull out? He’ll ask the audience to shout out songs and he’ll do a “megamix” of those tunes mashed up into one.

Lazy Ghost

If you can get tickets to see this up-and-coming garage rock outfit during your visit, snap them up immediately.

These guys released their debut album Snacks in January and they’ve been making waves ever since. With a loose, jangly vibe that’s balanced by their tight musical chops, you might see them on stages around the country very soon.

Courageous Mountain Rangers

Bluegrass music seems like a niche genre, but between the lighting-fast banjo and the sweet blended harmonies, what’s not to love?

The Courageous Mountain Rangers have assumed the tongue-in-cheek slogan “Whistler and Pemberton’s best-looking acoustic music and bluegrass band” because, well, they’re Whistler and Pemberton’s only bluegrass group (as far as I know). By that measurement, they’re also the area’s best bluegrass band — an honour I’d happily give them even if they had competition.

Jenna Mae

Alright, this list has been a little dude-heavy. Let’s heap some love on Jenna Mae, whose big voice and R&B groove has earned her a long list of gigs in Whistler. Sometimes you’ll find her performing solo, other times she’s on stage with her backing band, The Groove Section, in tow. Marking a decade in the resort this year, she’s worked hard to make music her full-time job — and it shows as she has become one of the most popular artists in the local music scene.

Helen Hamilton

Helen left behind a full-time career as a musician in a UK party band to move to Whistler a few years ago. Since then, she’s performed solo and as a duo — first as Ruby & Hale and, more recently, as Little Earthquakes. She has a penchant for dark electro-pop — and marries it with her soaring vocals — making her one to watch.

Where to find her: Crystal Lounge and Cranked Espresso Bar

Marble Canyon

If alt-country strikes you as the domain of BC’s neighbouring prairie province, Marble Canyon is here to make you think again. The six-piece band has two records to their name — including 2018’s The Other Side — that succeeded in evoking an emotive, introspective vibe as complex as the Pacific Northwest from which it was birthed. Love stories, tales of leaving, and whiskey swigging abound.

Where to find them: Pemberton Hotel and Norman Rudy’s in Squamish

Ruckus Deluxe

This duo is a strong contender for most interesting resume. Lead singer and acoustic guitar player Chad Oliver has played with Cirque du Soleil while Ian Cameron, who plays fiddle, electric guitar, and mandolin, has earned a Grammy nomination.

Sometimes Celtic, other times alt-country and rock, this pair has somewhat of a residency at the Dubh Linn Gate. If you’re in the mood for dancing, check them out.

Jam Nights

Did you bring your guitar (or maybe just your voice) to Whistler? Well, if you’re keen to perform, there’s no shortage of jam nights to check out. On Sundays at 9 PM, head over to the Crystal Lounge for Whistler’s longest-running jam night and every Wednesday from 9 until 11:45 PM at Black’s Pub. Keep your eyes open for other one-off open mics at bars and coffee shops around town too.

This list just scratches the surface of Whistler’s bustling music scene. There’s also the multi-talented Monty Biggins, reggae-rocker Stephen Vogler and long-time cover band Blame the Weekend, to name a few more. Use Whistler.com’s event calendar and select après and nightlife to get a list of what’s happening when you’re in town.

This Canada Day, The Tenors are bringing their blend of contemporary pop with a hint of classical thrown-in to the Whistler Olympic Plaza stage.

The trio of homegrown singers are known for their perfect harmonies and powerful songs that appeal to all ages and musical tastes. If you ran into any of The Tenors in the Village, they’d seem like your regular down-to-earth, outdoor-loving Canadians. You wouldn’t guess at the powerful voices they unleash onstage.

We caught up with The Tenors to see if they could give the Insider the scoop on who they are, where they find inspiration  and what we can expect at the upcoming Canada Day performance.

For the people that are hearing about you for the first time, how would you describe yourselves and your music?

Fraser Walters (FW): We are three distinct but complementary personalities and we are passionate musical creators who join together to celebrate great songs and write new music for our audience. We take pride in our live concert presentations mixing nostalgic covers, epic melodies, new works, and stories from our vast experiences of travelling the globe for over 10 years together!

Before we walk on stage, we remind each other it could be an audience member’s first show or someone’s last, so we always give it 100%.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

FW: Having three guys from varied backgrounds it literally ranges from Bowie to Benny Blanco, Copland to Cohen, and Puccini to The Police. When we make an album the list starts with hundreds of songs that get narrowed down to the final 10 or 12 that you see on a record. Many of the people we look up to started by performing other people’s music and doing so has definitely helped us hone our songwriting craft over the years.

What are you most looking forward to doing or seeing while you’re in Whistler?

Victor Micallef (VM): For one, the Canada Day concert should be a blast! We can’t wait to be out on that stage, nestled in an absolutely glorious setting, sharing our pride and having fun with our fellow Canadians! Besides the performance, it will be a real treat for us to spend a few days of leisure [time] outdoors with our families. We can’t think of a better way to reconnect with nature and our beautiful country.

Whistler is known for its adventurous spirit. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done?

FW: Flying in death-defying aerobatic planes and skydiving are definitely on the list. And between Clifton’s family-owned heli-adventure resort at Nimmo Bay, Victor’s family’s international travel schedule and Fraser’s yearly surfing or backcountry / heli-skiing trips, we’ve got the adventure bug no doubt.

As a group, what inspires you? Is there anything essential to your creative process?

Clifton Murray (CM): As a group we are inspired by connection, the connection of all of humanity’s common experiences, and the variety within them. We see ourselves as pursuers of the common ground. No matter where you come from or who you have become, we can all relate to certain fundamentals in life. Through our music and our writing, we aim to give the listener a glimpse into what binds us together, and also what challenges us, in hopes that we can make this world a more loving and compassionate place.

We are so fortunate to travel all over the globe, being welcomed into homes and cultures that are seemingly foreign to our own. We meet so many different people along the way: colleagues, contemporaries, fans, friends, and clients and we listen for the common threads between them all to weave together a song or a story that we can all relate to. It’s our shared experiences of love, loss, fear, courage, and passion that make us a global family.

With regards to what’s essential to our creative process, it would be a healthy debate on the heart of the matter at hand. The songs we write or the ones we choose from may not answer every question, but they hopefully present them in a way that gives reason for honest pause and reflection.

As fellow Canadians, how do you celebrate Canada Day? What does it mean to you?

CM: As Canadians, we are usually celebrating the privilege to live in this great country. Often we are in a public square with thousands of people from all walks of life singing songs with fellow Canadians by Canadians. To be at the epicentre of these revered and jubilant occasions gives us immense pride in our country and a great sense of gratitude for who we are as a people.  

Can you tell us anything about your Canada Day performance in Whistler?

VM: We have to admit that we always love to save some element of surprise for the audience. However, we can definitely say that we want the concert to be entertaining. The program will include songs that will get people moving, hits from the past and the present, some of our own originals, as well as songs that will pay homage to some of the greatest Canadian icons of our time. We can’t wait to be a part of the celebrations!

We can’t wait either. With their heartfelt singing style against an oh-so-Canadian mountain backdrop, it’d be hard not to feel a little swell of national pride, whether you’re a born and raised Canadian or embracing the holiday as a visiting, honourary Canadian.

Who to Watch for in Sport

As the name may suggest, the true heart of WSSF is skiing and snowboarding. While us “normal” folk are happy to slash the soft spring conditions for fun, elite athletes come to Whistler to compete against the best. After a long winter on the slopes, they’re in peak form, making spring the perfect time to battle head-to-head.

Saudan Couloir Race Extreme:
Stan Rey & Marie-Pier Préfontaine

Billed as the “steepest race in the world,” the Saudan Couloir Race Extreme is one of the most exciting events for spectators. Keep your eyes peeled for last year’s winners, Stan Rey and Marie-Pier Préfontaine. They are favoured to win, but in a race this unpredictable you never know who will come out on top. You can watch Rey and Préfontaine go for gold from the course-side or the CLIF-Side viewing area at the top of Jersey Cream (hosted by CLIF Bar).

Big Air: Laurie Blouin

The Sp’akwus & Halaw Invitational Big Airs are must-see events of the festival, the world’s best skiers and riders will be sending it off a huge booter beside Skier’s Plaza. With nearly $150,000 in prize money up for grabs, the stakes are higher than ever. It should be a nail-biting battle for the podium.

Hot off of winning gold at X-Games Big Air and silver at the Pyeongchang Olympics in Slopestyle, snowboarder Laurie Blouin is a serious contender for this event. Throw in the fact that she’s a Canadian and she’s sure to be a crowd favourite.

Whoever wins, one thing you can count on is the Big Air competitors putting on a thrilling, big finish to the festival. Who to Listen for in Music

The sunny days of the festival are made that much better when set to a soundtrack. There is a free outdoor concert at Skier’s Plaza each day of WSSF. With the concerts starting around après time, you can ski right off the slopes and into the party.

Main Stage: Michael Franti & Spearhead

Michael Franti has performed in Whistler once before during Wanderlust. He put on an amazing show that completely filled Olympic Plaza, it was standing room only (or more accurately dancing room only), with everyone from 20-somethings to families bouncing to the beat. He’ll be returning this spring to take to the stage in Skier’s Plaza on April 10 at 4 PM.

Pro Photographer Showdown: Robin O’Neill

If you haven’t been to the Pro Photographer Showdown before, I can’t recommend this event enough, it is easily my favourite of the festival. Held on April 11 at 8 PM, the show involves each competitor putting together a slideshow of the best action-sports shots from their career set to music.

It may be hard for anyone familiar with Robin O’Neill’s work to believe, but this will be her first time competing in the Pro Photographer Showdown. The stunning action-sport shots she’s known for can be seen everywhere from Whistler Blackcomb campaigns to the pages of all the best ski and bike magazines. She’s no stranger to putting together this type of show though, she is a past winner of both the Deep Winter and Deep Summer photography competitions. For her show, you can expect to see a moving mix of skiing and biking shots, stunning landscapes and dreamy uses of light.

CLIF Intersection: Los Amigos

Who doesn’t love a good ski / snowboard film? At CLIF Intersection in association with Protect Our Winters Canada, teams compete under a limited timeframe to create a banger film. Expect to see footage from the park, backcountry and everything in between. Competitors must film within 100 kilometres of Whistler.

I’m particularly hyped to see what Los Amigos creates for this year’s show. They started as a group of UBC film students who bonded over their love of shredding the heck out of the local mountains. They’ll be tapping into their extensive local knowledge to make a film you won’t want to miss.

Swatch ART+Soul: Local Artists

Swatch ART+Soul is WSSF’s very own pop-up gallery in the mountains. Open daily from 12 – 6 PM in the Whistler Conference Centre, this free event should be on everyone’s to-do list. Original pieces and prints will be up for sale so you can take home the ultimate souvenir from the festival.

MULTIPLICITY: Jon Turk

If you like watching inspiring TED Talks, you’ll love MULTIPLICITY presented by Mountain Life Media. Featuring exciting stories from outdoor adventurers, you can expect to have your mind and world-view expanded.

At the top of my must-see list this year is Jon Turk. The 70-year-old adventurer will be sharing tales from his many expeditions including kayaking across the North Pacific, mountain biking through the Gobi Desert and getting first ski descents in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzia. More than anything, I’m hoping that he shares his secret to eternal youth.
