Extremely Canadian Backcountry Adventures Information

Ability & Touring Experience

Advanced intermediate to expert skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders can enjoy Extremely Canadian Backcountry Adventures, regardless of your touring experience. If you can ride an un-groomed black diamond run at your home resort, then you belong with us. Participants are placed in small groups(average ratio of 4/5 to 1) of similar ability, optimal for honing your riding technique and avalanche awareness skills. If we cannot find a fit for you in one of our groups, we will happily refund your money and direct you towards a program better suited to your skills in-bounds. Not quite feeling up for it yet? Ask about our legendary 2-Day Steep Skiing Clinics to build your confidence and skills.

Basic winter backcountry gear is required for participation. Bring your own, or rent from Essentially Blackcomb in the Carleton Lodge at the base of Whistler Mountain in the main village. Rental Packages are available for $65 plus GST for programparticipants. Bag lunches for $12.50 plus GST also available.

Sample Itinerary

  • 8:00am: Meet outside on the deck of Essentially Blackcomb, in the Carleton Lodge, in the main village between the gondolas.
  • 8:45am: Head up Whistler or Blackcomb *with lift-line priority, then traverse with your guide out into Garibaldi Park.
  • 9:30am: Avalanche rescue practice, snowpack assessment.
  • 10:30am: On the move, gathering travel skills and snow safety information as you ski.
  • 12:30am: Big line skiing, continued avalanche safety & mountain travel skills training.
  • Day End Back in the village, with tired legs and open eyes.

This is a flexible itinerary; the snow and weather will call the shots. We’re all about getting the goods while they’re good, where they’re good.
