Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Whistler

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra played in Whistler this summer, returning with a four-day program of free concerts, quartets and quintets for audiences of all ages. A unique chance to hear beautiful classical music played in the open air by a full orchestra, with mountains all around.

Tuesday, July 1

Canada Day Concert

Location: Whistler Olympic Plaza
Time: 3:00 PM
Description: Enjoy the festivities of Canada Day in Whistler, including this free concert from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra celebrating the national day.

Artists

Conductor Gordon Gerrard trained originally as a pianist then went on to specialize in opera. Gerrard has worked with the Calgary Opera, and the Opera Nuova in Edmonton; he also passes on his knowledge at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute in Montreal, the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop, the undergraduate Opera Studio at the Manhattan School of Music, the Emerging Artist Program at Calgary Opera and L'Opera de Montréal's Atelier Lyrique.

17-year-old violin soloist Doreen Dasol Yun is one of Vancouver's most talented young musicians. She became assistant concertmaster at the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra for the 2012–2013 season; she has performed internationally and won a series of recital contests.

Artists

Teddy Abrams — conductor, pianist, clarinetist and award-winning composer—is music director designate at the Louisville Orchestra, conductor at Detroit Symphony, music director and conductor at the Britt Classical Festival, and resident conductor at MAV Symphony Orchestra in Budapest. He is also a guest conductor and soloist at a long list of orchestras.

Veteran pianist Jon Kimura Parker has performed with numerous orchestras around the world; from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Wolfgang Sawallisch in Carnegie Hall to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin's Philharmonie. Parker has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, and the Prime Minister of Canada. He is also an Officer of the Order of Canada.
