The Whistler Community

Whistler is much more than an internationally renowned destination resort. It is also a real mountain town with thousands of long-term residents plus a large transient workforce. This growing community offers a wide range of schools, local clubs and groups, and has a high degree of political and environmental awareness.

Who are we?

  • Whistler’s residents are largely adventurous, active people who enjoy a wide range of outdoor pursuits.
  • The population is made up of young, seasonal workers from all over the world along with families, long-term Whistlerites (many who started off as young, seasonal workers) and retirees.

One thing is certain; once you’ve been here it’s very hard to ever leave. The spirit of Whistler stays with you long after the ski or golf season ends.

Local Bus Service
WAVE (Whistler and Valley Express) is Whistler’s local public bus service. It runs 365 days a year; transit cards are available, and there are bike racks and ski racks on all buses.

Garbage, Recycling and Composting
Whistler is moving towards its goal of zero waste, an approach to waste management that utilizes recycling and composting facilities among other strategies. There are two garbage depots in Whistler: one in the north end at 8001 Nesters Road and one in the south end at Function Junction.

W.A.G.
Whistler Animals Galore is a no-kill animal shelter dedicated to protecting and enhancing the lives of lost, unwanted and homeless animals in Whistler. Take part in volunteer dog walking Mondays and Tuesdays from 3 PM to 5 PM and Wednesdays through Sundays from 1 PM to 5 PM. W.A.G. is now in a new location on Nesters Road in front of the recycling depot.

Re-Use-It Centre
This thrift store is chock full of great finds, from ski equipment and cookware to clothing and furniture. All proceeds go to fund the Whistler Community Services Society programs and other community initiatives. Located in Function Junction at 1003 Lynham Road.

AWARE
The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment strives to improve the quality of life in Whistler and surrounding areas by protecting and restoring the natural heritage and maintaining resources and ecosystems. They promote environmental sustainability through community education and advocacy. Public meetings with guest speakers are held every other month.
