RBC GranFondo Whistler Guide: What to Know Before You Ride

There are few arrivals into Whistler more iconic than cycling the Sea to Sky Highway with thousands of riders, ocean views behind you and mountain peaks ahead. Every September, the RBC GranFondo Whistler transforms Highway 99 into one of the most scenic rides in North America, and one giant celebration at the finish line in Whistler Village.

Whether you’re riding the full 122 kilometres from Vancouver, tackling the Medio (55-kilometre) or Forte (152-kilometre) routes, supporting friends and family, or just planning to soak up the atmosphere in Whistler Village, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of GranFondo weekend in Whistler.

What is the RBC GranFondo Whistler?

The RBC GranFondo Whistler is a mass-participation road cycling event that brings thousands of riders from around the world to the Sea to Sky corridor each year. The flagship route takes riders from Stanley Park in Vancouver to Whistler along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway, with fully supported aid stations, traffic-controlled sections, and incredible mountain views along the way.

The event weekend also includes family-friendly activities, celebrations in Whistler Village, and shorter or longer route options for riders looking for a different challenge.

When is GranFondo Weekend?

The event takes place in early September, making it one of Whistler’s signature late-summer weekends. In 2026, the event takes place on Saturday, September 12. Expect warm daytime temperatures, cool mornings and fun village energy throughout the weekend.

INSIDER TIP: If you’re visiting for the event, it’s a good idea to book accommodation early, as hotels and vacation rentals fill up quickly.

Where Does the Ride Finish?

The finish line is located in Whistler Village, where riders are welcomed with music, cheering crowds, food, drinks and a celebratory atmosphere that carries on well into the afternoon. Even if you’re not riding, the village becomes a fun place to spectate and celebrate.

What’s the Ride Like?

The full GranFondo Whistler route is challenging but rewarding. Riders can expect long climbs, rolling highway sections, changing weather conditions, aid stations, and incredible ocean and mountain views along the Sea to Sky Highway.

The final approach to Whistler is especially memorable, with spectators lining sections of the route and a lively finish-line atmosphere waiting in the village.

Training Tips for the RBC GranFondo Whistler

  1. Build Time in the Saddle Gradually – three months out is the ideal time to start increasing your weekly long ride.
  2. Don’t Skip Hill Training – the goal is learning how to stay comfortable during long efforts, not sprinting every hill.
  3. Practice Eating and Drinking on the Bike – one of the biggest mistakes first-time Fondo riders make? Underfuelling.
  4. Train for Comfort, Not Just Fitness – a 122-kilometre ride is as much about comfort as it is cardio.
  5. Ride in Different Weather Conditions – September in the Sea to Sky corridor can bring sun, wind, cool mornings, or rain.
  6. Include Recovery in Your Plan – fitness improves during recovery, not just training.
  7. Practice Group Riding Skills – GranFondo day means riding with thousands of other cyclists.
  8. Taper Before Event Day – you want to arrive fresh, not exhausted.
  9. Remember: It’s Your Ride – not every GranFondo rider is racing. Some riders are aiming for a personal best. Others are there for the scenery, the challenge, and the experience of riding the Sea to Sky Highway car-free. Train for the kind of day you want to have.

Is the RBC GranFondo Whistler Right for You?

One of the most common questions about the RBC GranFondo Whistler is: Do you have to be an elite cyclist to do it? Short answer: no.

While the 122-kilometre ride from Vancouver to Whistler is definitely a challenge, the event attracts a huge range of riders every year, from experienced cyclists chasing personal bests to first-time Fondo participants checking a major goal off their bucket list. The key isn’t being the fastest rider on the highway. It’s being prepared for a long day in the saddle.

INSIDER TIP: The GranFondo Whistler website is a great resource for clinics, blog posts with event advice, and a thorough FAQ section.

A Good Fit for Riders Who…

  1. Are Comfortable Riding Long Distances – riders should have experience with 60–100 km rides, sustained effort, steady pacing and climbing fatigue.
  2. Can Ride Predictably Around Others – GranFondo day means thousands of cyclists sharing the road together. You need to know how to ride in a group, maintain a steady line and communicate while riding. You don’t need to be highly technical, just predictable and aware.
  3. Are Prepared To Train – three months of consistent riding can make a huge difference.

Appreciate the Experience as Much as the Finish Time

One of the things that makes the RBC GranFondo Whistler unique is that it’s not only about performance.

For many participants, the highlight is about riding the Sea to Sky Highway car-free and the scenery along the route. It’s also about the shared atmosphere and arriving in Whistler Village at the finish line to celebrate. You’ll see riders in full race mode, and others stopping for photos. Both approaches are completely valid.

First Fondo? You Won’t Be Alone

Every year, many riders tackle their first major cycling event at GranFondo Whistler. The atmosphere is supportive, encouraging and beginner-friendly. And honestly? Crossing the finish line in Whistler after riding the Sea to Sky Highway is pretty unforgettable, whether you arrive at the front of the pack or are simply proud you made it there.

Where to Eat After the Ride

Post-ride food tastes extra good after 122 kilometres.

Looking for a quick post-ride meal? Head to Main Street for a loaded Splitz burger, Chicken Parmigiana at Pasta Lupino or an Aussie pie from Peaked Pies. Want to keep the celebration going? Hit one of Whistler’s patios, at Dubh Linn Gate, GLC, The Beacon and The Longhorn. If you want something decadent after such an achievement, reserve a table at Wild Blue, Araxi, Rimrock or Hys.

Reservations are recommended for Saturday evening during GranFondo weekend, especially for larger groups.

Best Spectator Area in Whistler

Riders come in exhausted and emotional after their long ride, and the atmosphere is electric with announcers, music, and crowds. It’s the best spot if you want maximum energy. Bring a cowbell!

INSIDER TIP: Granfondo Whistler offers semi-live tracking through the RTRT.me app. Each rider is assigned a number and a unique tracking link to share.

After they come through the finishing gate, riders usually relax on the cool grass of Whistler Olympic Plaza. There’s food and drink, music, sun chairs, kids’ activities, meetup tents, merchandise and even a place where you can register for next year’s event!

Why Staying in Whistler Before the Ride Makes Sense

While the ride officially starts in Vancouver, many participants choose to spend several days in Whistler before the GranFondo weekend. It’s an easy way to turn race logistics into part of the vacation:

  • Get acclimated before event day
  • Enjoy lighter training rides around the valley
  • Dial in your bike setup
  • Eat and hydrate properly before the ride
  • Avoid the stress of same-day travel planning

Whistler’s extensive valley trail network also makes it easy to spin out the legs before or after the event without dealing with vehicle traffic. For riders travelling from farther away, staying in Whistler ahead of the event can also help create a more relaxed and enjoyable race experience overall.

The Best Part? Recovery in Whistler

Few places are better suited to post-ride recovery than Whistler.

After hours on the highway ride north, the village offers everything tired cyclists tend to need:

  • Comfortable accommodation steps from restaurants and amenities
  • Spa and recovery treatments
  • Easy walks through the pedestrian village
  • Lakes, patios and mountain views
  • Great food and celebratory drinks
  • Space to stretch out away from the crowds of the city

Many riders build in an extra recovery day to fully enjoy Whistler after the event, especially since September weather is often ideal for sightseeing, hiking, patio dining and relaxing outdoors.
