Take Your Feasting to the Farm
I am one of the lucky ones. When I was growing up, my dad was a farmer on-the-side, so I got to drink milk from our very own cows, eat fresh-picked garden vegetables, eggs from our chickens and meat… well, Rosie the cow and Bob the pig had a habit of “disappearing.”
Fast forward to today and I completely HEART the world’s new-found love affair with farmers and agri-tourism. In a day when most kids grow up thinking everything comes in a package from a grocery store, this renewed interest in getting to know where your food comes from is a much-needed, welcome revival. That’s just one reason that I am eagerly anticipating this weekend’s foodie-on-the-farm event.
The past two summers, Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant and Executive Chef James Walt saw overwhelming success when working with event producer Outstanding in the Field. The passion and interest of the attending public inspired them to continue their partnership with the Pemberton Farming community to put on three amazing farm dinners, the new Araxi Longtable series @ North Arm Farm.
My lucky streak has continued in life – I attended last summer’s Outstanding in the Field. The visuals alone were mouth-watering: a linen-draped table in the fields of North Arm Farm with breathtaking Mt. Currie as the backdrop. Sigh.
The afternoon kicked off with North Arm farm owner and Pemberton Mayor Jordan Sturdy leading us on a farm tour and sharing insight into the farming community of Pemberton.
Little teaser samplings were provided all the while, and by tour’s end, I was almost drooling in anticipation of the multi-course dinner prepared by Chef Walt & team.
Oenophile’s aren’t neglected. Each course is paired with local BC wines.
The first longtable series dinner is on July 30. I can hardly wait to see (& taste!) the creations Chef Walt and his team put together for the launch of what I hope to be an annual summer offering.
Much deserved applause for the Chef Walt and his team!
