ARTWALK OPENING RECEPTION TO FEATURE 13 VENUES AND 37 ARTISTS
On July 3, 2009 from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm, ArtWalk 2009 kicks off for the summer. To take part, start at TD Canada Trust and Whistler Real Estate Company in Marketplace, where entertainment will be provided by Murphy’s Laugh. The acoustic styling of Alice Newton, Dana Marie and Dani Quayle will entertain the ArtWalkers moving through Marketplace venues: Re/Max Sea to Sky Real Estate, Transition Space Art Gallery, Pasta Lupino and the Life Coffee Company Main Street. From there, the route continues along Village Stroll past Blenz Coffee, Expressions Art Studio and Get Nailed, and then over the bridge where participants then visit the last venues on the list: MY Millennium Place, Sutton West Coast Realty, The Beach and Ruby Tuesday. The soulful voice of Pemberton’s Papa Josh will be heard in Town Plaza. ArtWalk HotSpot venues feature Whistler Brewing Company and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, where tasters of their best products will go along with appies provided by the venues. Along the Village Stroll, The Human Statues play a one-hour set at Millennium Place starting at 9:00 pm.
LUNAFLIKS OPENS 7TH SEASON WITH SCREENING AT SQUAMISH LIL’WAT CULTURAL CENTRE
To celebrate the opening of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre’s new outdoor patio, the first Lunafliks of the season, One Week starring Joshua Jackson, will screen at sundown on July 1, 2009. Film goers will have the opportunity to tour the Squamish Longhouse and Lil’wat Istken that were recently completed behind the main cultural centre building. Snacks and popcorn will be available. Whistler’s annual Canada Day parade gets underway at noon on July 1 and wants your participation! WHISTLER SLIDING CENTRE OPENS FOR SUMMER TOURS
Starting June 4, 2009, the Whistler Sliding Centre will be open from Thursday through Monday for public guided or self-guided tours. Come and see where the Olympic athletes (bobsleigh, luge and skeleton) will race for the gold next February! The Centre is open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and visitors must check in at the track lodge upon arrival. Admission is by donation.
PEAK 2 PEAK GONDOLA RE-OPENS FOR THE SUMMER
Explore Whistler’s high alpine like never before with the new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Opening June 6, 2009 for the summer season, the gondola connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains at their peaks. In addition to Whistler Mountain’s trails, you can hike the brand new trails on Blackcomb and check out the stellar 360 degree views while you cross between the two. Make sure you get one of the glass-bottomed gondolas.

XAVIER RUDD HEADLINES MOUNTAIN WEST MUSIC FEST
Australian musician Xavier Rudd has been tapped to headline the inaugural Mountain West Music Fest on August 22 in Whistler. The singer-songwriter plays guitar, stomp box, harmonica, percussion and didgeridoo. The two-day event will feature mostly folk music on Saturday while Sunday will all about reggae The Rastrillos, a 12-piece Mexican reggae band has been confirmed as one of the opening acts. The festival runs August 22 and 23 at the Whistler Golf Club driving range.
TRANS CANADA TRAIL EXPANDS WITH SQUAMISH-WHISTLER SECTION
The Sea to Sky Trail that stretches between Squamish and Whistler will now become part of the 21,000 km Trans Canada Trail, the largest trail network in the world. THE ROYAL HUDSON MAKES SPECIAL APPEARANCE TO LAUNCH TRAIN SEASON
The historic Royal Hudson locomotive made a special appearance on May 13 to launch the Whistler Mountaineer’s 2009 season. Starting from North Vancouver, the Royal Hudson made the trek to Squamish along with the Whistler Mountaineer before disembarking at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park where it will be stored throughout the year. The Whistler Mountaineer travels between Vancouver and Whistler seven days a week and offers both northbound and southbound service.

WHISTLER BREWING TO SET UP SHOP IN FUNCTION JUNCTION
After being previously brewed in Kamloops, the Whistler Brewing Company will set up shop in the community in late fall, just in time for the start of 2009/2010 winter season. Brewery tours and beer tasting events are planned for the facility. Whistler Brewing currently produces four brands: Black Tusk Ale, Classic Pale Ale, Premium Export Lager and Weissibier wheat beer.
CELEBRATION PLAZA TO HOST MEDAL CEREMONIES
After much negotiation, the medal ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will take place in Whistler’s Celebration Plaza after all. Originally set to be awarded at Celebration Plaza, it was decided in February that medals would be given out at the individual venues instead. With this new announcement, planning can proceed with what will be a fantastic program of music, entertainment and art as the athletes and spectators join together to celebrate.

Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake features two to four day workshops at beautiful Alta Lake. Instruction is for beginner to intermediate level in oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, sketching and life drawing. Workshops start May 24, 2009 and end August 28, 2009. There is a drop-in studio with a facilitator but no instruction every Monday from June 1 to August 31, 2009. MORE MUSICAL ACTS CONFIRMED FOR WORLD SKI AND SNOWBOARD FESTIVAL
The 10-day extravaganza kicks off April 17 with Thornley, a Canadian post-grunge alternative band spearheaded by Ian Thornley, Mama’s Cookin’, a band of hip-hop beats and dirty Delta blues, takes the stage on April 19, Canadian old school southern rockers, the Arkells, on April 21 and Canadian legendary alt-rock group 54-40 will close the show on April 26.
LE SCANDINAVE SPA TO OPEN IN WHISTLER
Construction of Le Scandinave Spa Whistler begins in mid March and will be a 20,000 square foot facility on three acres of forest hillside. The spa will consist of six separate buildings housing saunas, steam baths, solariums, hot and cold baths, terraces with outdoor fire pit and massage rooms. The entire facility has been designed in accordance with sustainable development principles and will feature green roofs, extensive use of solar energy and Energy Star-certified equipment. The spa will be located 1.5 km north of Whistler Village, on the grounds of Riverside Campground. Opening will be in the fall of 2009.

TELUS WORLD SKI & SNOWBOARD FESTIVAL CONCERT LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Organizers of the festival, now in its 14th year, have announced a few of the acts that will take the stage during the FREE outdoor concert series. April 19 will feature Ozomatli, a Grammy award-winning, L.A.-based 8-piece band blending Latin, hiphop, funk and reggae. On April 22, Ten Second Epic, voted best band in Edmonton, will play songs from their brand new album Hometown. The Stills, a Montreal favourite, play on April 23. Indie-rock wild child Emily Haines and her band Metric will debut their brand new album Fantasies on April 24. DJ Z-Trip will headline the grand finale on April 25; he’s opened for the Rolling Stones, played Bonnaroo, headlined Coachella and Australia’s Good Vibrations Festival and Big Day Out, and in 2008 played for the troops in Kuwait.

WHISTLERITE STEVE PODBORSKI NAMED 2010 ASSISTANT CHEF DE MISSION
The famous Crazy Canuck skier who captured a bronze medal in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid will serve as an assistant Chef de Mission for Canada’s 2010 Winter Olympic Team during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Podborski’s duties will include being a representative for the athletes and providing support as much as possible; Podborski will be based mostly in Whistler for the Games.

TO LOWER MAINLAND GIRL
As part of CTV’s Christmas Wish Series, 9 year-old Adrielene Soriano wished for mittens, jackets, warm boots and earmuffs for her extended family so they could stay warm and dry this winter. She also asked for a Whistler vacation so her mother could get a relaxing break from her difficult routine. CTV contacted Tourism Whistler and its members responded with overwhelming generosity. Adrielene and her mother enjoyed a two-night, three-day Whistler vacation from December 12-14 which included accommodation, transportation, dining and activities. The Whistler trip marked a number of firsts for the family: their first trip to Whistler, their first ski experience, and their first time in a hot tub.

PEAK 2 PEAK celebrates launch with ribbon cutting

The official launch of the brand-new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola gets underway on Friday, December 12 with a ribbon cutting at 11:00 am. The 22 winners of the Ride of Their Life contest will board the very first gondolas departing both terminals. Inside Whistlers Roundhouse Lodge will be a PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola Open House with artwork, technology demonstrations, face painting, a colouring contest and celebration cake. After the Gondola closes for the day at 3:00 pm, there will be a Grand Aprs in Skiers Plaza featuring a DJ and video screens, a live art showcase and a kid-friendly performance by well known entertainer Norman Foote. Also starting at 3:00 pm are aprs parties at the Garibaldi Lift Company, Merlins and Dustys that will go on well into the night.

Conde Nast Traveler magazine has named Whistler the best ski resort town in North America in their annual ski poll. Whistler also won for best aprs-ski, best activities and best local dining.
Jamaican Bobsleigh Team headed to Pemberton
The famous underdogs of Calgary’s 1988 Olympic Winter Games have agreed to make Pemberton their home base while they train for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games at the Whistler Sliding Centre. Pemberton, located 25 minutes north of Whistler, has offered the athletes accommodation, transportation and sponsorship opportunities. Based in Evanston, Wyoming for the last 11 years, the team had expressed interested in relocating to the Whistler area for training.
Whistler Olympic Park Celebrates Winter Season with Day Lodge Opening
November 22 marks the official opening of the brand new day lodge at Whistler Olympic Park. Kicking off the cross-country ski and snowshoe season, the grand opening will feature food, entertainment and information booths about the recreational programs offered at the Park. Visitors will be able to check out the Olympic venue with ski jump tours and try their hand at biathlon rifle shooting. Afterwards, warm up in the fully operational lodge. If there’s enough snow, there will be free access to the trails for skiing and snowshoeing
PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola Sky Cabin travels across Canada beginning October 20
Starting from a display at the 2008 Toronto Ski, Snowboard & Travel Show, a cabin from the brand new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola will make its way across Canada before landing back in Whistler on November 2. The tour includes stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Kelowna and Vancouver. Pulled on a trailer by a hybrid truck, the cabin will visit Canada’s best-loved tourism icons and break for PEAK 2 PEAK parties in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Kelowna and Vancouver.

Skiing Magazine has once again named Whistler Blackcomb the best ski resort in North America. For an unprecedented 12th year, readers voted Whistler as the place they want to ski most. Skiing’s Best Apres Scene award went to Whistler’s Garibaldi Lift Company for its great food and variety of live concerts. In addition, SKI Magazine’s Top 50 Resort Guide ranked Whistler #3 overall for the second year in a row.
