Be Well, Ski Well: Sport and Baths the Perfect Combination
The Scandinavians have long appreciated a cold winter’s day for the opportunity to hit the slopes for a ski and afterwards, soak in soothing and tranquil outdoor baths. While Whistler is a long way from Scandinavia, you can experience these European traditions right in the Whistler Valley.
Although well known for alpine skiing, Nordic sports play a big role in the resort’s winter activities. With a variety of trails suitable for all levels of cross-country skiers, Whistler is the ideal place to strap on skinny skis and explore the enchanting winter wonderland. There are three areas to choose from: Lost Lake Park, Whistler Olympic Park and Callaghan Country.
Whistler Olympic Park was built for the cross-country skiing, biathlon and ski jumping competitions during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Starting summer 2010, the park will be open to the public to enjoy the trails. As one of only two biathlon venues in Canada, Whistler Olympic Park offers a unique experience for winter sport enthusiasts.
The newly opened Scandinave Spa brings the age-old tradition of authentic Scandinavian outdoor baths to Whistler. Occurring in three stages, spa-goers alternately use eucalyptus steam baths and wood burning saunas with cold Nordic waterfalls and outdoor pools connected by heated paths. The last stage is relaxing in a warm solarium or by an outdoor fireplace.
In addition to cleansing the body, the baths improve blood circulation and release endorphins, contributing to a better physical condition, quality of life and sense of well-being. Add in the majestic views that surround this secluded spa in the forest and this Scandinavian experience becomes a breathtaking Whistler paradise.
Whether you’re seeking performance enhancing well-being, relaxation or a great social outing, the pairing of Nordic sports and Nordic baths are a winning combination.
