Olympic Couples Celebrate Valentine's Day Pursuing the Podium

heartValentine’s Day is an opportune time to recognize the athletic couples who participated in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Pairs skaters and real-life couple Amanda Evora and Jeremy Barrett hit the ice, but not together. They competed against each other along with their respective partners. Other Olympic couples include speedskaters Jilleanne Rookard and Trevor Marsicano and half-pipe snowboarders Elena Hight and Greg Bretz. While you may not be able to pursue the podium with your loved one, you can search for your soul mate on Whistler’s spectacular slopes.

With stunning vistas, plentiful dining options, rejuvenating spas and exhilarating outdoor activity options, Whistler is a glorious place to warm your special someone’s heart. For those seeking romance, your next great love might just be a gondola ride away.

Celebrity couple Heidi Klum and Seal got engaged in Whistler on a glacier at 7,000 feet where Seal had a custom-fitted igloo built complete with a bed, sheets, rose petals strewn everywhere and candles. A helicopter dropped them off for the night and they spent the night in the igloo with food and champagne and Seal popped the question.

While a custom-fitted igloo may be out of reach for most, there are still lots of ways to bring the romance in Whistler. Ride the fabulous PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola spanning the distance between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Make sure to get one of the silver gondolas as they have a glass floor for viewing the Fitzsimmons Valley down below. Hop on a horse-drawn sleigh and cuddle up under a blanket with your honey while you meander around a moonlit Green Lake sipping hot chocolate. For something with a little more adrenaline, take a twilight ziplining tour and plunge into the mysterious darkness of old-growth rainforest with just a headlamp and more than 4,000 LED lights twinkling off in the distance to light the way. Afterwards, head to the Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s Mallard Lounge for a decadent chocolate fondue for two.

A romantic getaway in Whistler is sure to knock the ski socks off your happy honey. Cuddle up in Whistler and see what happens when cupid’s bow is aimed towards snow!
