Three Days of Family Fun under the Sun

When summer rolls around, school is out and the kids are itching to get outside exploring. Bring them to Whistler for an action-packed getaway of fun, sun and adventure.

Your trip starts with the journey up the Sea to Sky Highway, known unofficially as one of the most scenic highways in the world. Sandwiched between mountains and ocean, the landscape is majestic. Stop off at Shannon Falls, just south of Squamish, and have a picnic lunch (there are picnic tables equipped with BBQ stands) while checking out BC’s third-highest waterfall at 1,105 feet.

bike parkAfter arriving in Whistler, check in to your accommodation and then take a stroll with the kids around Whistler Village to get your bearings. Grab an ice cream cone from Cows and wander over to the base of the Village Gondola to marvel at the mountain bikers performing jumps in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. The Bike Park offers lessons and camps for kids as young as five years old, so pop in to Guest Relations and sign them up (and yourself!) for some lessons the next day.

Pick one of the village’s many restaurants and have a leisurely dinner on a patio. The alpenglow from a mountain sunset is something you don’t want to miss.

A good night’s sleep brings the reward of a hearty breakfast so order room service and dig in; you have a full day ahead of you! Your day starts back at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park where you and the kids get suited up for a morning on the trails. With bikes, helmets and protective gear in place, you’re ready for the most fun you’ve ever had on two wheels.

Alta LakeAfter an exhilarating lesson, it’s time for lunch and a lazy afternoon at the beach. Take the Valley Trail to Rainbow Park, spread out your towels, slap on some sunscreen and soak in the scenery. Alta Lake has a beautiful sandy beach, kids’ playground and a floating dock for swimmers. Join one of the beach volleyball games that are always happening on the marked courts.

Head back to the hotel for some quiet time before dinner – the kids will need it! Tonight, you’re having a romantic dinner for two while the kids go climbing at The Core, Whistler’s indoor climbing gym. Their Climb & Dine program offers supervised play and a pizza dinner while you enjoy an adults-only meal. Drop them off at 6:00 pm, pick them up at 8:00 pm or 9:00 pm depending on their age, and they will be ready for bed!

The next day is all about Whistler’s famous alpine. Head up the Village Gondola to the top of Whistler Mountain and explore a few hiking trails at 6,000 feet. The handy trail map will guide you to the easy, kid-friendly paths. Have lunch on the Roundhouse Lodge patio while admiring the stunning scenery.

Peak 2 PeakAfter lunch, take the exciting PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola over to Blackcomb Mountain. This engineering marvel spans the distance between Whistler and Blackcomb’s peaks, stretching a little more than three kilometers. The ride takes just 11 minutes and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountain range and Whistler Valley below. Wait for the silver gondolas as they offer glass bottoms for a 360° experience.

Over on Blackcomb, try some of the hiking trails that surround the Rendezvous Lodge. With cold drink in hand, hop on the Solar Coaster Express chairlift for a scenic ride down to the village. At the base of Blackcomb Mountain is a children’s Adventure Zonefeaturing a luge, bungy trampoline, mini golf, bouncy castle, climbing web, batting cage and go karts. Find a bench and relax while the kids play in the sunshine.

It’s time to make your way back to the hotel for late check-out and pack the car up to head home. Pick up a couple of souvenirs on the way and take some last photos of your summer holiday in Whistler. The best part is, winter is only months away and brings a whole new range of activities and fun for family adventures.
